It's true that a lot of bad game remixes like to throw sound effects all around. Good ones are always rare.

Oh, so a remixer is looking at this? Good.

Because the problem is they generally don't go outside their comfort zone or listen to advice not from OCR. Ergo, all the OCR songs are just made for OCR--lots of spamming of repetitive samples, minimal arrangements, and usage of the same three cruddy Fruity Loops samples/Garageband presets/whatever everywhere.

It's what ruined remixes for me, really. It became an industry in which the only real originality was "Which sound sample from a game will I spam endlessly in THIS remix?"

GASP. IT'S ONLY 'ALRIGHT'. THIS IS AN OUTRAGE. HOW DARE SOMEONE-- OMG--

well in all truth it's not like I'm a native remixer of the site. I probably joined ocremix like 3 years ago but I didn't get active until this project, so the truth of the matter is I'm not like super in-tune as to how they all react to people outside of ocremix.

hehe am I the only one who does this? look at what everyone else is saying about the project on other sites?

I'm gonna give it to you, the vocal stuff was definitely not something I was fond of. I think a bit of it grew on me, but the Sonic Boom mix... man. I was literally critiquing it as nicely as I could, attempting to see if I could get him to fix it up more, but it just never ended up the way it should've been, and while I really don't like the actual mix, the vocals is what really brought it down.

I was also quite a bit amazed when ladywildfire's track made it on to the 10 tracks on the mix flood. I was honestly like, "that mix? of all the mixes?"

Personally, I enjoyed the amounts of house and electronic music in there, because the thing is that that's just sorta come around these past few years as a big deal and not really any of the ocremix Sonic projects before it had any of that. Sure, it's getting old, but I sorta liked hearing that from ocremix. In all honestly, I think a lot of this record is the first time anything has sounded really professional from ocremix. That's not saying I absolutely hate all their other stuff because it sounds less professional; I'm just saying lots of this album actually sounds like it would make sense on the radio. And most of those songs are actually from people like me who popped out of no where and were like "hey look ocremix is doing a Sonic CD remix album... why not, I'll just go ahead and jump in on this". People like Portaneux or however you say his name and the guy with the other really odd remixer name that did the glitch hop/dubstep remix a couple of tracks before me.

So am I the only one on Sonic Retro that likes Project Chaos? Sonic Retro seems to be a hatefest for ocremix. I loved Project Chaos, honestly.

So does Sonic Stadium and Sonic Retro have a disagreement here? Sonic Stadium seems to love this stuff.

I am praying to God that no one from ocremix finds me on this forum.

I loved Project Chaos. I also quite enjoy this album. Anyone who talks out against it by trying to pin on it "common presets/sample repetition" definitely doesn't understand both what they're talking about nor current generation of electronic music.

Project Chaos is on a pinnacle of arranged Sonic music as far as anything goes. I don't think anything has come close to that project as a whole.

Yeah Sonicandtails brings up another point.

while I don't know anything about FL Studio and therefore I can't say when they would be using preset loops from FL Studio, I can speak for GarageBand since I used to use it (and now I use Logic Pro which uses all and more of the GarageBand loops). I have practically heard every GarageBand loop and I can promise you I have not heard one on any remix from ocremix. In fact they hate it when they hear a preset loop they know. I think we all do. so honestly that's sorta a weak argument against ocremix. I know for a FACT that SONIC UNLEASHED used GarageBand/Logic Pro loops. I've heard them in there.

Project Chaos was a bunch of amazing metal versions, some standout other tracks (Three Ring Nightfall? All over that shit) and the rest? Easy listening, I suppose. Nothing all-out terrible (alright, Knuckleduster. But some folk here LOVE that shit). I think it's kinda good that all the Sonic remix albums have had their own identities. Bizarre electro for Sonic CD is the standout. Metal for S3K. Trance for S2 (Casino Night and Hidden Palace, looking atcha). Utter fucking shitballs for S1 -- can't win 'em all I guess.

Also LOL @ WinAmp's obfuscation of a simple function. Rest in a peaceful place where they teach shit about UIs, WinAmp.

ok I'm just gonna go ahead and laugh with this statement

though I did like "Under Construction" and Joshua Morse's track. Joshua Morse never really disappoints me.

S3K didn't seem all metal and hard rock. There was a ton of stuff in there that wasn't metal and I freaking loved it. If the whole thing was metal I probably would've outright hated it.

You misunderstand me. It wasn't all metal, and I love it for that. (As well as Three Ring Nightfall as mentioned, there's the Sky Sanctuary and Flying Battery ones that also kick ass)

It's just that those metal arrangements, completely unexpected at the time, were the highlight. Live at the Sandopolis is probably the lasting favourite with its crunchy refrain.

Of Speed of Sound though, I'm wondering why Rayza's Euroclub '95 remix of Green Hill Zone wasn't included -- it was prehumously superior to anything on the album. ;)

I think what made Project Chaos so amazing was all the different musical genres represented, all put into a coherent album that felt like it told the story of Sonic 3 and Knuckles. For example, going from Beneath the Ashes's piano piece into The Secluded Stronghold rife with anticipation, then Breathtaking Vision's all-out orchestral climax... and then Before the Storm happens, bringing it back down and placing you right at the end before the final battles.

Also, where's the love for Walk on Water? Come on, guys :(

Pertaining to this album, Forever in Your Mind, This is Madness, and Gotta Go Faster really stuck out to me as memorable. Black Metal, on the other hand, was painful and made me feel as if I was being shouted down by someone with an overdone, stereotypical French "accent". + - WEEEUK DASUKYUUUUUUHHH TDEEEEETH

    We're friends now.

I don't know whether RR6W/G-Mixer's comment about Ladywildfire was positive or negative, but I am so totally glad This Is Madness ended up being included. The track is almost like there was a third future variant in-game, some bizarre and twisted variant that barely makes any sense. And I love it. It's how I roll.

    EDIT

I keep forgetting: Take It All The Way is now my favourite version of Sonic Boom ever. EVER. It's so damn happy! Love that sax, too.

Another thing that really made Project Chaos good is that there was a lot of outside artists working on it.

Seriously, at least half of them were from VGMix and not OCRemix. I know Danny Baranowski used to stomp around there, as did Snappleman.

And that's probably what gave it a ton of variety. The big problem with how insular OCRemix is is how the "ReMixes" (hate the capitalization) are judged to be on the site by a small pool of people. it may lead to higher quality, but it also leads to a smaller selection of music... And the occasional ska track, which I really don't mind. I love ska.

It's why the FF6 album was good, but not a lot of it was good. The vocal tracks and generic trance tracks all blended in, and the metal remixes, fucking rock opera, and funk chocobo remix really stood out because of it.

On some albums, track selection is poor too (The recent Mega Man one that Capcom asked them to do comes to mind. Generic trance remixes of the least known themes from some of the series. It's really weird.), or the remixes get so far removed from the original songs that you can't really identify them.

But seriously why do OCRemix artists keep trying to sing when they know they can't? If you want vocals hire a singer, get someone on the site who can sing, or use vocaloid or something.

Edit: Hot damn that sax in Take it All the Way is fantastic.

I would say I'm an outside remixer, though I've made more than a thousand posts on ocremix haha

It's not like I stay inside of ocremix and depend on ocremix to post my remixes.

Yeah no I'm saying I didn't like the ladywildfire mix

I just can't listen to her voice :/

sails: I appreciate you wanting to show to this person that this place isn't an unbridled OCR festival, but discrediting my entire opinion based on one flaw doesn't really do either of us any favors.

What you really should have said was "They don't use those presets. What is it really that you dislike?"

I dislike the samey-sounding electronica and the perception that that is 'the best' the remix scene has to offer.

Also, I didn't hate Project Chaos--in fact I eagerly watched its development and got it first thing.

The trick is--most of it was made by non-OCR people.

Now guess why I disliked the Sonic albums before and after it.

That's right--they were mostly made by OCR people.

But I don't hate the people per se, but rather what they believe is 'great' registers as 'boring and flavorless' in my book.

Wasn't trying to discredit your opinion, you can have it and I respect it. You're just wrong about it being copy-paste shenanigans as well as it being so devastatingly worse than any other EDM out there. This is literally what the majority of Top 40 EDM sounds like. It's what people want. I'm sorry it's not for you, but they can't cater to everyone :\

I get ya. I can agree that there is definitely some repetitive stuff, but honestly I still see some good variation.

but yeah, Project Chaos is still my favorite project ocremix has ever done and that's probably mainly because so many of the tracks were by people that weren't really part of ocremix.

Sorry but Clockwork Criminal from that S1 Remix album is awesome, It would be more incredible if they didn't use sound effects in it though :V

A fix for one of the one of the worst tracks on the whole album.
