Is it just me or does the Sonic in that picture look kinda... modern.

He looks a bit taller and slightly longer-spiked, yeah.

One of my good buddies from the band Freen in Green were able to mess with the audio of the Sonic OVA enough to get what's probably the highest quality rip of at least two of its songs so far.

Unless we get an official soundtrack someday which will never happen, this is probably the best we're gonna get.

I kind of wish there was a good clean rip of the Land of Darkness theme. I know it shows up in two separate places: when Sonic leaps from the waterfalls in the titular land, and during the Sonic/Metal fight sequence at the poles - but there's one specific part of the song I could never quite figure out the chord progression for, about 23 seconds into this video. It shows up twice in both times the song's played, and all four times it's drowned out by loud sound effects. :(

Yeah, the way these rips were made were by taking the Japanese and English versions' audio and using them to cancel the differences out and just have the remaining bg music. The only problem with that is that the sound effects remain in both versions (of course), so they can't be removed. Its the main reason the Land of Darkness song hasn't had a good rip yet.

Now those are some tasty tracks. Heard a lot of new details in them that my current rips don't seem to have, namely deeper bass. I really wish the games went in the OVA's direction, musically and otherwise.

Oh god the OVA is good. That kinda campy, almost-awful good. But damn, I love it.

Odd that they'd sample it twice, though.

Kanzen Chuukei Pro Yakyuu Greatest Nine also samples the same "hit it" sounds from Stardust Speedway bad future. Of course, sampling was really big back then but it feels inherently lazy to use the same stuff.

Yeah, they showed me a WIP version of an attempted 'rip' at one point,

    https://app.box.com/s/svnq4y7h6gw7fm7glswj

I asked them if they could upload it for me, it's not good like the other two, but they hope Shadow Hog can get some use of the slightly more audible notes going on in this attempt.

EDIT: PS, the aforementioned samples, as well as many from as early as Sonic 3 to as late as Sonic Rush Adventure come from a sampling CD called "Norman Cook: Skip to my Loops". There are a ton of Jet Set Radio (Future) samples from that collection, as well!

I had thought about the possibility of doing that for getting a soundtrack out of a dubbed movie before, but... how can you even do that?

Now that's pretty awesome, didn't someone from here made those sprites? I can't recall their username, but I remember someone was working on Sonic sprites so they could be used in an atari 2600 game. Too bad the music coming from a different tv was louder than the music in the homebrew Sonic game, I could barely hear Green Hill's music. >_>

As far as I understand, they use phase canceling to remove the BG music and SFX from the voice clips, then with a mostly clean voice track, they turn it around and phase cancel out the voices from ontop of the song. Sadly the SFX are usually left behind as they're the same in both versions of the OVA.

I don't think that's the same person, although I could be wrong. You're thinking of tokumaru, also a fixture on the NESDev forums, and this guy is Sprybug, most well known for "Princess Rescue", also for the VCS (which you might have heard about being sold on cart at AtariAge for a short while, before it's believed that Nintendo asked them to stop selling it).

I'm constantly surprised at just how much the 2600 can pull off considering so much made for it was derivative Space Invader clones.

Did anyone properly document the 2005 verizon version of Sonic 1?

If not, a new member on SSMB found it and is now showing it off, hes even ripping the music.

I had that version, on 2 different phones. It was choppy as hell and had a level select from the get-go if I remember correctly. You can probably still find that version on the Blackberry marketplace or some older service that didn't get Taxman's Sonic 1. I would have downloaded it a third time for my Blackberry Storm, but the lack of multi-touch would've made for an unplayable mess. Glad I stopped myself. I wish I could remember more details.

My phones must have blown pretty hard back then, it's running much smoother than I remember in that footage.
