Wow, $1 at a second hand shop? That's every collector's dream come true right there. Odd how he never thought to ask about it online in the six years he has owned it, but there are a lot of unusual Saturn models out there like the Hi-Saturn so I guess he just assumed it was one of those.
And that only worked with PSO I, II, III, and a game called Cubivore. Of course, you could also LAN a few games, and play online unofficially through warp pipe. The PS2 similarly required an external modem. How I miss the original Metal Gear Online... I really do hope someone close to the community ends up with Pluto 001, so we can see how the thing's put together. I wonder how the hell it even ended up at a flea market?
This is an amazing discovery. One has to wonder how things might've turned out had this been released. Probably would've been quite expensive for the time, I imagine. No kidding. It's insane how these ultra-rare gems are purchased for so little and are revealed to be worth a lot more.
I believe the code name for the MD/Gen was Terra, which might explain how they got the name for the MD PC (TerraDrive). I forgot where I heard that though so I could be completely wrong.
Pretty sure I heard that Terra name from somewhere, though I may be projecting it based on the MD being Earth in the planet project system. The Teradrive is more likely to come from the SI prefix (mega -> giga -> tera). Now, if you want a riddle, tell me why the Megadrive product code was HAA-2510. Every other system used a product code that reflected the system name: HSS and HST for Sega Saturn, HMJ for Mega Jet, HMA for 32x (short for Mars), HGG for Game Gear, HWM for Wondermega, HPC for Pico... But the Megadrive (and Mega CD) used HAA. What did the AA stand for? Simply AA as in first characters for a new product code number scheme, or was it the codename of the machine? In other news, Pluto 1 is up for an auction: http://www.gamegavel.com/item.cgi?show_item=0000752122 7600$ already.
Of course, the Sega Aardvark!, now it all makes sense! Hard to imagine a AA codename, it is food for thought though.
Guys. http://www.gamegavel.com/item.cgi?show_item=0000752122 Let's pool together and buy this. For science.
I would love to but I can't, I really haven't got the money to give and definitely not in that 4 day limit. I wish the best of luck for Retro as this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to get such rare official hardware. EDIT: OMG current bid is $7,600. I have a felling the final bid is going to go well beyond that.
This was out of reach the minute it went up for public auction But I guess on the plus side, we got some more photos. Last week we didn't even know this thing existed, so that's progress I guess
Damn, makes a RingEdge look cheap. Hamburgerman's bid got totally blown away there :v: Wasn't expecting it to make that much, I thought maybe 3-4,000 considering the lid doesn't even stay shut. Guess I was wrong! The way that bidding has gone, I wouldn't be surprised if it sailed way past $10k. 2 people with serious bids so far, cue mental bidding war in the final minutes.
Kinda silly, I mean really, isn't it just a Saturn with a built in modem? There is nothing amazing or new about this device, I mean someone could open it and just find the same Saturn board just with the modem poorly soldered into it?
