Who Created the Zones anyway?

  1. I just started thinking about how similar both Hydrocity and Labyrinth Zones look in style, albeit one looks a bit more colorful and less ancient. Did the same civilization that populated the Floating Island also populate South Island? What happened to them? Did they make ALL the Zones? How did they do it? With the Chaos Emeralds?

The zones were created by video game level designers. I suppose that's a good enough answer.

Most of the zones are probably nature's work, and some of them are man-made, like Labyrinth Zone. But who made the Death Egg? Wow, that's a tough question...

On my butt in front of the computer. Where else?
I'm working on working up the willpower to work on learning how to make my own Sonic fangames. Not quite there yet.
It's vaguely possible that Angel Island and South Island bear some connection, as South Island is the first known location to have played host to the Chaos Emeralds in the Sonic canon. Still, it's probably just anonymous ruins, Labyrinth.

I would love to live in a backwards universe where earth textures can come out as perfect rectangular blocks, checkered dirt, and where the terrain somehow forms into loops, giant roller coaster hills, etc.

South Island (Sonic 1): Six Chaos Emeralds
Westside Island (Sonic 2): Seven Chaos Emeralds
Angel Island (Sonic 3&K): Seven (more?) Chaos Emeralds, the Master Emerald
The Little Planet (Sonic CD): Seven Time Stones

It seems unlikely that Chaos Emerald technology was independently developed in all of these places. The same civilisation is probably responsible for their presence in all of them. Thus I would guess that the Ruin Zones are mostly built by that civilisation. Robotnik, obviously, built all of the Robotnik Base levels (Death Egg, Chemical Plant, Metropolis, etc).

The ones I have trouble with are the Casinos and Carnivals. Did Robotnik build Carnival Night on Angel Island, was it already there, or is there a third presence on the (supposedly mysterious and arcane) floating landmass?

In more recent games, such as Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2, the Zones are usually explained pretty well (Twinkle Park: amusement park in Station Square; Lost World: Echidna ruins; Pyramid Cave: old, disguised Robotnik base), but some (such as Pumpkin Hill) are still kind of confusing. Honestly, since these Zones aren't explicitly placed on "mysterious islands that are home to the Chaos Emeralds", I wouldn't have much of a guess as to who is behind them.

It's odd that we've never seen a Zone "built" by Sonic and his friends (other than a few "Tails' Workshop" types that are always totally contradictory). Followers of SatAM would feel right at home in a "Knothole Zone". I wonder how Sonic Team envisions Sonic's home, or if they even think he has one. A Zone set in the OVA's jumbly headquarters would be boss.

I like to think that the orderly nature of the Zones (chequered rock, striped grass, etc) is due to the influence of the Chaos Emeralds. They're crystals, which by definition are geometrically ordered structures. Their power might mould the landscape somehow.

For me every zone that isn't natural, is made by ancient Echidnas , by Humans (or Animal) settlements, or by Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik himself. (Well NOT him alone, he have robots for something.)

    Sonic home?
    The planet is his home.

The zones were created in 1790 by federal marshals. Following their creation, the zones were maintained every 10 years by a census dictating where each zone boundary was. If I'm not mistaken, we're due for another one pretty soon. Might help offset that little plot of land Spring Yard somehow managed to get from Green Hill, depending on who feels they live where.

Seriously, though, MST3K mantra. You're overthinking it if you want an answer for EVERY zone.

According to the Archie Comics, Zones were made by a giant magical panda.

Are you sure about Chemical Plant Zone? Just because it's a mechanical theme doesn't mean that he did it. I don't tend to look into stuff like that so I wouldn't know. But also, not all industrial complexes are bad. There are industrial complexes that do stuff to clean the environment like a water treatment plants. Which is what I kind of consider Chemical Plant Zone to be. And in the background is where the city dwellers live that have built it. Chemical Plant zone could have been there for a hundred years.

That's actually a really neat idea that I'd never considered. I held the emeralds responsible for the messed-up psychadelic shit in the Special Zones and just put down Mobius' weirder geology to 1337 tectoincs, but the Emerald's presence in Sonic's world would undoubtedly cause bizarre stuff to happen, especially on geological timescales. Gg.

But as for the patently constructed ruins like Labryinth Zone... Sonic's world has an ample supply of named Ye Olde civilizations that have risen and fallen. Off the top of my head:
    • The early (human?) civilization that was crushed by the previous emergance of Light / Dark Gaia - Unleashed
    • The echidnas (Knuckles Clan) - S3&K
    • The other echidnas (Nocturnus Clan) - Chronicles
    • The Babylonians - Riders
    • The Black Arms (they left Glyphic Canyon; there might be more sites hiding somewhere) - Shadow
    • Soleannea (they had sun-worshipping ruins going back thousands of years in Dusty Desert) - Sonic 06

So you see, there's LOTS of places crumbly-ancient sites could come from. Modern sites we can ascribe to Eggman or the humans.

Anyway, I always assumed Robotnik/Eggman invented the 'Zones', if that's what you're asking?

    The truth.

But yeah, the writers at Archie want explanation for every detail. So much that they'll go out of their way to answer questions that Sega won't.

Maybe Labyrinth was created by the Angel Island dwellers before it went up into the sky. They abandon it for some reason when they go to Angel Island, and build Hydrocity as a more advanced version.

The same could be the case for Marble/Marble Garden, but that may be a bit of a stretch. Marble Zone was probably built by or on a dormant volcano, and became somewhat active when Sonic came around. (Now that I think about it, there are a lot of these parallels)

Mystic Cave also sort of looks like an early version of Endless Mine.

Spring Yard, Casino Night and Casino Night: all made by the residents of the area (all of which have city-like forms in the background), obviously as "theme parks" of sorts, but were outfitted by Robotnik with death traps and such.

"Are you sure about Chemical Plant Zone? Just because it's a mechanical theme doesn't mean that he did it. I don't tend to look into stuff like that so I wouldn't know. I agree with this, and Oil Ocean might as well be added too, for it could be some kind of containment area for the substance in the level.

Actually, said panda only created the special stages, not the zones. The really weird zones stopped appearing long before Ian took over. Though other zones, like the S3&K ones, are still there, along with most of the alternate universe ones. It's just most of the really weird looking ones that are long gone.
