The difference is that they at least treated us with respect when we were kids by giving us good games rather than shove the hedgehog in the latest cash grab adventure.

It took me the longest time to figure out the words but you just said it perfectly for me.

They're fucking kidding themselves if they think Sonic is fine as it is now, but this isn't the first time someone from SEGA made such a bullshit statement regarding the "quality" of the franchise.

 

I take this back, Sonic was always a cash grab adventure.

First time I was ever legitimately angry at a video game developer.

 

For me, it's not so much a feeling of elitism as it is a feeling of pity. I'm sure when we were kids, we would have gobbled up anything that had Sonic slapped on it. But it seems to me that they've stopped respecting that mindset and started taking advantage of it. The problem isn't the new generation; they're merely us displaced by 10 years. The problem is that a new corporate strategy has taken root in the new generation's time which takes advantage of the mindset that was always in the target demographic.

TL;DR Blame Sega.

 

Think about it. He was made for the entire purpose of appealing to the U.S market and competing with Mario. The goal of creating blue was to get green.

 

Despite the fact that I think the Sonic games ARE NOT fine as they are (Unleashed was a step in a new direction, we all know the story), I can't help but think the guy is mostly right.

At least he was 100 times better back then than today. SEGA had an actual vision of what Sonic was back in the day, now it's just LOL WHATEVER with Sonic and his shitty companions slapped on it.

 

As an european who knows how big Sonic was here (especially in the UK), I feel miffed every time people say he was supposed to appeal to the US. Wasn't he supposed to appeal to the whole west, or did I get this wrong?

Then again, now that I think about it, wasn't this the case with all SEGA games? They're always made for the sole purpose of competing with something else and attractive to the US market.
