While we're talking about inaccuracies in Sonic 1, there's also this:

 

Sonic really should wash those shoes.

 

I think the colouring on the shoes is intentional. It helps show how fast his feet are moving because it looks like the red and white are blending, thus creating a blur effect.

I noticed the off centered thing recently when I was recreating each title screen. pretty crazy.

 

The badniks' identical head I had noticed, but the off-centre Sonic 1 was a complete surprise.
