You know how these levels are always on beaches? Other transitions from land to water are possible. This is Zakynthos, Greece. It demonstrates what I think should be done. Why not use steep seaside cliffs with scrubby vegetation? Do like AIZ and start from the basics, ignoring the fact that GHZ and EHZ were in one type of location on the coast. As the Zone gets closer to the end, the vegetation gets thicker, until you're in a GHZ-alike. Or, better yet, do the opposite- have GHZ4.0 slowly transform into a barren land of stone.
I don't either. From what I understood, we go from a lot of grass, to no grass and a lot of rock. That's not what I meant about progression. I'm not talking about slight change of vegetation, I'm talking about a radical change.
I had something similar in some sketches for the beginning of the project. You were basically going from the beach to a deeper part of the island.
We could take some of the level concept ideas thrown here so far and use them all together for the level, then add some more. Starting on the sand, going to the Green Hill-esque landscape, then to the cliffs and elevated platforms. Add more stuff between them as you wish.
I want this. and this. To make babies. Scrap the islands used in the back. They're reused from Sonic CD anyways. Recreate the ones in the concept art Adamis provide. I'll take care of the water texture. Someone get to work on the foreground ground tiles, And anyone else with talent, start making some trees, and grass or whatever that shit is.
The other part of the tiles that I did after the mockup. They're not properly finished, I don't know if I will have time to finish them.
I just want to say that's the best sonic looking beach I ever seen sprited. I would also like to say the brown dotted tiles remind me a lot of my sonic fan game from about 2-3 years ago:

I guess the jist of my criticisms is make thinks a bit chunkier if thats any help
Adamis, I simply love your drawings :3 I also adore the kangaroo badnik... Let's call him Boxeroo-bot! EDIT: Matwek, thanks for the criticism, I'll fix it as soon as possible
Also you probably shouldn't follow the proportions of the leaves I originally drew, they're way out. Best to start your own from scratch.

They aren't very much in style. I love the concept though.
