    Sonic 2
Best - Oil Ocean, Music, graphics.
Worst - Hill Top. boring as fuck.

Best - Carnival Night, Decent level length. great music, great graphics. Night time level.
Worst - Angel Island, music is awesome but the level is too short.

    Sonic and Knuckles
Best - Sandopolis, the first hard level in the game and the one with the best music.
Worst - Lava Reef, no sense of speed.

    3d Blast (saturn)
best: Gene Gadget, Music. music music
    Worst - Lava Reef.

    Rush

Worst - Dead Line, cool name, great music, boring level.

    Rush 2
Best - Ghost Ship. Music, graphics
Worst - First level, barely played this one so I forget. Mushroom Valley I think?

Advance was a trainwreck. I hardly remember any of it.

    There's something wrong there...
Also, it's Plant Kingdom the first level of SRA. Also, after some trials and errors at the trying of getting a S rank at Mirage Road, I ended up really liking the level. The name of the level is just fucking win, and gotta love the alternative paths. The only part that really kills the level is the boat with the falling rocks and egg pawns, specially Act 2.

Actually I have hardly ever died in DEZ, except for in the bosses (I.e. miniboss and final bosses, not the tube boss), though I used to die a lot in the bottomless pit after the conveyor belt on wheels section (hopefully you know what I'm talking about) as I would take a lightning shield instead of the CBoW, but I'm used to doing that now and remember to jump at the end.

Also yes, FBZ does have brilliant music, but everything apart from the music is just plain annoying.

People complain about this for more than it's worth, IMO. Once you get used to the pattern, it's easy to avoid. OHKOs in Sonic bosses aren't a new thing (cough AIZ2 boss pits cough).

What about that one boss in Sonic Rush? That's also a OHKO if I recall correctly -- at least in a certain type of attack.

    Sonic 1:
Best - SYZ, since it's so awesome, I love the music and the level design
Worst - SLZ, lots of death can happen for me here, I don't know why

    Sonic CD:
Best - QQZ[Past] Music and level are my personal favorite in Sonic CD, the level is pretty and the music is great
Worst - WWZ for the bouncing floor too

    Sonic 2:
Best - CNZ It's so fun. Why not?
Worst - HTZ I am so bad at this zone it hurts.

    Sonic 3(&K):
Best - ICZ I just love this zone. I always have.
Worst - LBZ I hate this zone.

Most of the other games I never played a lot or all the way through, or even at all (rush+)

I would heavily dispute the "easy to avoid pattern". It took me about 30 attempts to beat that boss as Sonic for the first time, and once I'd got past as Tails and Knuckles I never did that boss again (with Cream it's piss, mind). I single-handedly blame this boss for the reason I've never finished SAdv2 as anyone other than Cream, during the end-of-game boss rush section. Simply not worth the effort required.

And the AIZ2 pits are static obstacles you only fall into if you aren't paying attention. =P

Yes, in fact, 5 bosses has OHKO attacks.
Leaf Storm and Huge Crisis = Almost the same bosses. Leaf Storm has two OHKO attacks, one that's a powerful, earth-shaking slam, and the other one which the Eggmobile spins around the platform, knocking you off the stage. Huge Crisis' boss only has the powerful slam as a OHKO attack.
Altitude Limit = Has two OHKO attacks as well. If, when he jumps on the platform, you're exactly beneath him, you die. And there's also the fan attack that can kick you out of the platform.
Dead Line = When Sonic or Blaze is defeated, they come up with a last bursting attack. If you knock him/her out of the arena, you win, if not, OHKO.
Final Zone = The boss can smash the arena with both hands, if you get caught in this attack, OHKO. Also, his last attack I guess, but since I never ever got caught on that attack, I don't know for sure.
Also, I think that the Night Carnival boss also has an OHKO attack, but I'm not sure.

    Worst: Labyrinth Zone. Fuck you.

    Sonic 2:
Best: Casino Night Zone and Chemical Plant Zone. Fast, fun, lots of things to do.
Worst: Aquatic Ruin Zone. HM ARE WE SEEING A PATTERN HERE MAYBE

    Sonic 3:
Best: Ice Cap is pretty good I guess
Worst: Hydrocity kind of sucks but it isn't nearly as bad as the other two

    Sonic & Knuckles:
    Best: Everything else
Worst: Sandopolis. HATE. So, so much hate.

Best: SBZ. Why? It has badass music.
Worst: LZ. Do I really need to comment?

    Sonic 2
Best: SCZ as it brings a new element to the game.
Worst: WFZ because of that FUCKING BOSS. *shakes fist*

    Sonic 3
Best: LBZ because I enjoyed the final boss, because I'm evil.
Worst: CNZ. It took me years to beat that fucking barrel moving up and down thing.

    S+K
Best: SSZ because it had the old bosses and it had badass music.
Worst: SZ. Sandopolis was the most annoying level of all time.

    Sonic Rush
Best: Zone 1, can't remember the name.
Worst: That Carnival one. I still haven't beaten the game yet, though, so I don't know if there are any worse ones yet.

    Sonic Rush Adventure
Best: Hidden Islands. They were all fun to play.
Worst: Sky Babylon, I believe. That flying on a ballon thing was fucking impossible.

Best: Star Light Zone. Great art, very fast, 2nd best music in the game. This is the Zone which started my passion for the "Night Speedway" cliché. The only problem is that it is too easy for a semifinal Zone.
Honorable mention. Spring Yard Zone. Best music in the game, and a very well structured level.

Worst: Marble Zone. Most linear stage in the game, pretty easy and repeatitive.
Not-so-honorable mention: Labyrinth Zone. Pretty slow stage, could had a better design.

    Sonic 2
Best: Chemical Plant Zone. Love the music, level structure of the "Night Speedway" cliché, good art and level design.
Honorable mention: Hill Top Zone. This is how Marble should have been. Good music, good level design and not repeatitive.

Worst: Wing Fortress Zone: Most linear stage in a 16-bit Sonic game. Not very big, and a lot of cheap deaths.
Not-so-honorable mention: Sky Chase Zone. The reason why the game should have ended after Metropolis.

    Sonic CD
Best: Stardust Speedway. Best art of 2D Sonic games. Best Music of 2D Sonic games. Best level design of 2D Sonic games. Best level in every Sonic games.
Honorable mention: Quarts quadrant: What I said above, just put "2nd best" instead of "best".

    Worst:None, this game is awesome.
Not-so-honorable mention: Tidal Tempest. Not a bad stage, but it feels like it misses something unique, unlike other stages,

    Sonic 3
Best: Marble Garden Zone. Best non Sonic CD-styled level. Awesome art, music and gimmick.
Honorable mention: Everyone elso, tihs game is perfect. Allright, maybe Icecap

    Worst: None.
Not-so-honorable mention: None, this game is perfect!

    Sonic and Knuckles
Best: Death Egg Zone. Best final Zone in a Sonic game. Every final zone should be like this: Long, hard, full of gimmicks.
Honrable mention: Flying Battery Zone. I don't mind cheap deaths where the rest of the stage is well designed.

    Worst: None.
Not-so-Honorable: Sandopolis. I don't really like its art and design.

Best - Green Hill. It only beats Star Light because of the fact Star Light's boss really sucks. Seriously.
Worst - Scrap Brain. I don't know why, but I only slightly enjoy act 2, otherwise it's a fail of a level to me.

    Sonic CD
Best - Hmm... Definately Stardust Speedway. I just... really like that level.... A lot.
Worst - Metallic Madness. Good luck keeping your rings - this level is a dick.

    Sonic 2
Best - Wing Fortress Zone. Probably the best music in the game(Sans Hidden Palace), and it's just... epic.
Worst - Hands down Oil Ocean. Hate the music, hate the enemies, and the oil slicks are just lazy filler from Sonic 1.

    Sonic 3
Best - Hydrocity Zone. Had you caught me last year, it may be different. But a fast water level? Sign me up!
Worst - Carnival Night. The music and colors burn my ears and eyes.

    Sonic and Knuckles
Best - Lava Reef. Barely beat out Hidden Palace. I love the music, the layout is fun, and you feel the full effect of the fire shield. Also a good platforming level.
Worst - Sandopolis. The level forces some horrid slow points on the pulley system, and all in all very uninspiring.

    Sonic Advance
Best - Me <3 that last boss on the moon. Such a call back unto Doomsday, and I love it.
Worst - Egg Rocket. When it starts to pull apart, I get pissed because if I mess up, I eat bottomless pit.

    Sonic Advance 2
Best - Leaf Forest. I like it. Fast, fun, and simple, like any good first level. Running on water is just icing on the cake.
Wost - Hot Crater. The music was fine, but... it didn't build very well between levels and I disliked it's layout.

    Sonic Advance 3
Best - Sunset Hill. The Music, the look... everything was top notch. But what was up with those wood boxes?
Worst - Chaos Angel. Very annoying act 3. Boss was barely worth the trouble. Also, being Tails killed the difficulty, but everyone else... it was too hard.

    Sonic Pocket Adventure
Best - Um... The Chemical Plant like level. It was so fun...
Worst - Since I played only two levels before the system lost power, I can't say I have a worst...

Sonic Rush - I've played the first level and the final battle. I like the final battle more.

    Sonic Rush Adventure
Best - Played very little of the game. Heartily enjoyed one of the secret islands.
Worst - An ice island secret level. I hated it.

    For the helluvit...

    Sonic 1 Megamix
Best - Before they canceled it, Nova was working on making new layouts. But I really enjoyed Robjoe's old Dark Fortress Zone. It fit the mood of the music better then blinding speed.
Worst - Megamix? A bad level? Well, Robjoe's Scrap Brain Act 3 was nigh unwinnable due to his enemy fetish. Nice work on getting rid of the level skipping first segment and replacing it with a bed of spikes though... that pissed me off...

    Sonic Uno
Best - Mystic Zone, yo! Platforming and custom areas galore.
Worst - Water Works Zone. It starts, you see a dam, and then promptly fall to your doom.

    Sonic 1 16-bit:
Best - Spring Yard. I love how speed-driven it is, and yet not a mindless running spree.
Worst - Star Light. There is better music in other zones, and prettier ambients too. Still a good zone though.

    Sonic 2 16-bit:
Best - Tie - Aquatic Ruin (its music is epic, plus it has a very lush, regal ambient to it <3) and Metropolis (dear god I love Metropolis music SO MUCH, and with an awesome level design to boot)
Worst - ... but I love all of Sonic 2's zones ._. okay, the "least awesome" is Hill Top.

    Sonic 3:
Best - Marble Garden. It's very, very, very classy.
Worst - ... Angel Island on fire? @_@

    Sonic and Knuckles:
Best - Death Egg. It is still exhaustively copied on later games.
Worst - Hidden Palace, because it's not the deleted Sonic 2 version it is kinda.. empty. It has nothing about it that makes you stop and stare unlike the deleted Sonic 2 one.

    Sonic CD:
Best - Stardust Speedway, because it is pretty diferent on each time zone.
Worst - Quartz Quadrant is kinda blah.

    Sonic Advance:
    Best - Ice Mountain! <3
Worst - That stupid Marble Garden-wannabe. And they call it "Angel Island". @_@

    Sonic Advance 2:
Best - Tie - Music Plant (OMG IT'S SO PINK AND HAPPY AND--) and Techno Base (I demand a 3D version of it!)
Worst - Egg Utopia, for being a completely uninspired Death Egg clone. Nice music, though.

    Sonic Advance 3:
Best - Chaos Angel. God, I was needing something that epic. <3
Worst - Toy Kingdom was kinda empty, and not colorful enough for a toy kingdom. =(

I'm just going to site acts rather than stages...

    Sonic 1
    Best - Starlight Act 2
    Worst - Labyrinth Act 3

    Sonic 2
Best - Hilltop 2 (watches the stones fly)
Worst - Chemical Plant Act 1 (Odd since Act 2 is great.)

    Sonic CD
    Best - Quartz Quadrant 2
    Worst - Metallic Madness 2

    Sonic 3
    Best - Launch Base 1
    Worst - Launch Base 2

    Sonic and Knuckles
    Best - Lava Reef 1
    Worst - Sandopolis 2

Sonic 2 is a good example of why I think trying to categorize by zone rather than by act is just plain silly.

    I just want to say:

The people who liked Casino Night Zone are what ruined Sonic.

Casino Night Zone is a bunch of abstract crap, and because of it, we had later games that had non-organic abstract crap like such as this:

    Sonic 1:

Best: Star Light (dangerous bombs, bottomless pits with seesaws, a boss with a seesaw. What couldn't I ask for!)
Worst: Marble (I'm sorry, but it's just crap in my opinion. It's really boring and can put you to sleep.)

    Sonic 2:

Best: Chemical Plant (it's really fast, enough said.)
Worst: Aquatic Ruin (I hate being deep underwater. It just puts an obstacle in rushing (platform levels are okay once in a while.))

    Sonic 3:

Best: Marble Garden (I don't see how it's so long and annoying. The start is awesome, there's fighting in the sky, and its one of the levels in it that has no water at all! (S3 alone))
Worst: Carnival Night (It's fast, but the barrels can get annoying. I also hate the music. It's just annoying and repetitive.)

This is a large question for me, but here's some quick answers. I'll get to weirder cases later.

    Sonic 1
Liked: Starlight Zone. The music and the feel is very nice.
Hated: Marble Zone. Don't get me wrong, Labyrinth zone is EVIL, but Marble Zone has you waiting tediously for platforms to finish autoscrolling.

    Sonic 2
Liked: Wing Fortress Zone. I am sad this has never been fully replicated. The harrowing feeling of hanging over instant death, the ship motif, and the gun turrets and propellers. Truly whimsical and mechanical at the same time.
Hated: Aquatic Ruin zone. Forgettable appearance, water pits that exist to annoy you, and stuff hitting you by surprise every 15 minutes.

    Sonic 3
Liked: Launch Base Zone. It comes close to capturing the essence of WFZ, and has good music too!
Hated: Marble Garden Zone. Too much instant death, and the final boss of the zone for Sonic is by far the most irritating to me.

    Sonic and Knuckles
Liked: Doomsday Zone. The shame is how they keep tributing it for every Sonic game since; the original remains quite exciting.
Hated: Friggin' Sandopolis! First part's too long, second part's an annoying maze of ghost attacks.

    Sonic Adventure
Liked: Egg Carrier - Air Deck or whatever it is. Sense a pattern? Although it's no WFZ, it has the same excitement factor.
Hated: Big the Cat anything. Gah! Thirty minutes easily wasted trying to fish for what? Nothing. Although it'd have to be his Twinkle Park stage in particular; the Hot Shelter stage he has is hilarious.

    Sonic Adventure 2
Liked: Cannon's Core. It was sorta the best of everything the game had to offer, one after another.
Hated: Rouge's Egg Key level. So long. So annoying. So worthless.

    Sonic Heroes
Liked: Hang Castle. The pacing and everything is neat.
Hated: Casino Park/Bingo Park/The Robot Storm. These all hit you one after another with their infuriating lack of sanity... too easy to die, too little skill involved...

    Sonic Unleashed
Liked: Empire City Night. I play it over and over again. A good mix of challenge and difficulty.
Hated: Adabat Day. Frustrating instant death everywhere. Not even good old Eggmanland style either.

I'll post more later. Someone should tally this up to determine what style is hated most by Sonic fans! :p

making cool music no one gives a shit about
Unless you're playing Aquatic Ruin over and over and over and over again, you'd be dead and a half by then. ;)
