    It's little touches like this that make this project so mind-blowing to me. This feels like a 7th iteration of a complete project, not a first one.

    Tails looks so cute :3 I love all the little touches on the revamped Chemical Plant tileset as well. Can't wait to see what's coming the next 2 months, every single update for this project is like, unequivocally positive. Even the more minute additions make me go "hm, well that looks useful".

    Gosh, that look for Tails is quickly becoming my favorite, he has so much personality! Knuckles looks so good with that deeper red too.

  13. Nice work. I know it's cliché to say at this point, but SEGA should hire you for a 'proper' release. Have they contacted you?

    Rumor has it that SEGA's official release of Sonic Studio will utilize Hedgehog Engine 3 for the online level sharing interface and character sprite rendering. :eng99:

    Okay conclusive, maybe I'll stop being asked about this becoming an official project now haha.
    (It's a compliment of course but I like just chippin away at this myself! Just doing this for fun)

    I believe a lot of fans don't understand that, no matter how relaxed SEGA may seem, this is not how professional channels operate in any industry; outside solicitation is a big no-no. What I've typically seen are prototypes of licensed IPs pitched *in private*, as Whitehead and HeadCannon have done in the past, slowly building up a professional relationship with the company as they go.

    And even if we ignore that reality for a moment, SEGA can't simply stamp a game with a seal of approval and "ship it". Regardless of how high-quality fans might perceive a fan game to be, retroactively turning it into a commercial project can bring in enough problems to turn it into a PR nightmare, or kill the project entirely. (Not just the passion behind it!)

    This was my breakdown, for everyone who asked me why I don't seek an "official" status for Shang Mu Architect:
    • All prior contributors must to be retroactively paid for their assets/work
    • Multiple QA testing cycles to budget for
    • Localization staff to hire
    • Additional artists to bring some amateur assets to commercial standard (As well as replace copyrighted sprite rips from other IPs)
    • Additional programmers for integration into services like Steam/Epic
    • Additional programmers to handle console ports
    • Marketing staff
    • Additional budget for a fan game "studio" to become an LLC
    So, even for a finished fan game, you're soliciting SEGA for house-buying sums of money, (anywhere from $50k up to $200k+) while having no prior working relationship with them. Why would anyone ever agree to that?

    This is the explanation that worked for me, at least; just passing it around. :V In Lapper's case, the fact that SEGA isn't looking for a "Sonic Maker" to start with is explanation enough!

    Technically we already had one, but if we ignore that

    most fan games don't get released (even the really good looking ones), so yes, we might not get a "Sonic maker". Do you have a plan for how much you're going to do before you think about a release to the public? It could take years to get every Sonic 1 and 2 level down.
