A bit bothered that Super Sonic still uses the invincibility theme in Sonic 1. Would be nice to hear the Sonic 2 Super Sonic theme there.

Casino Night 2P was originally put on for Oil Ocean, and the final track used in Oil Ocean sounds like it may have been intended for Sand Shower/the desert zone.

Honestly, I could picture Mystic Cave 2p being used for Wood Zone too, it's just too fitting.

I'd say Emerald Hill 2P is more fitting for Wood Zone

You can say that if you want, I only said "too" because I was agreeing with Yash.

I just think the instrumentation is more fitting of a deep woods zone, think the second stage from "Buster's Hidden Treasure" if anyone's ever played that. Very dark.

  6. Metropolis is a solid fit for Wood Zone as well, or better yet a slower version so they both keep it. Death Egg part 1 was surely meant for Genocide/Cyber City, making it a strong alternate for Metropolis. Then Emerald Hill 2P could go to Tropical Sun.

Veering back to Origins itself, how neat would it be to have a fully customizable soundtrack?

Isn't that kind of proving my point? It would be incredibly lame to not officially include Knuckles in CD.

Probably the whole decision of not having Knuckles in Sonic CD was by SEGA executives, not the production team.
Only if they plan it as a future DLC.

What's with Sega and including cheap mobile-looking UI elements in their remakes? Really downgrades the whole experience. I also want to echo that I hope the music doesn't stop so suddenly in the final release; it was jarring in the video.

  10. For me the '10' song from sound test doesn't even fit for a level theme, even if it's good. Also, the 2013 Hidden Palace feels a lot more dynamic, which makes Mystic Cave 2P theme even more fitting imo.

It's truthfully hard to say for a lot of the proto stages unless the music is blatantly designed for their aesthetic. Like we have only theories what the beta levels were gonna play like so no idea what tone theme they suited.

Like I feel the big reason Hidden Palace didn't use Track 10 was because the remake version's layout and gimmicks were blatantly more fast paced and high adrenaline, far more fitting a faster track. The original layout was slower, a grand breath taking step into a lost world, hence likely why the mysterious sounding Track 10 was added to it in later builds.

I admit I was kinda disappointed the remake version didn't try a proper expansion of the original layout, but the theme they used fit what they done.

I'm fairly certain Stealth himself actually confirmed they didn't use Track 10 for the new Hidden Palace Zone because it 'didn't fit.'

    Working on my art!
Yea this. It was a deliberate choice on their part even if I personally don't agree.

    >be me, sega executive
    >have a basic understanding of what the television game with the blue cartoon rat thing and red fat man is all about
    >have meeting discussing reselling remastering the classic games with other executives
    >research shows sonic fans are suckers and will buy anything, especially after a content drought that rivals the saturn era
    >some dude insists we cut the red rat thing from one of the games and sell the ability to play as him in said game to fans a month later
    >insists most of the consumers won't even question it, especially when most of the people buying are probably new converts from the blue cartoon rat movie
    >mfw it works

I mean, Knuckles not being in CD is probably less of an elaborate decision of branding or executive matters, and more that he just wasn't in the original CD port, whereas everything but the Drop Dash and the Coins were already there in the 2013 releases. If the Drop Dash does get added to CD it does raise the question of why the extra work wasn't put in to implement Knuckles, but the DD is a lot easier to implement probably than a whole extra character, their code and sprite sheets.

We have no idea how unified everything actually is or how separate it may be instead, and even with our decompilation knowledge now and the modding we've been able to accomplish, it may just be a development thing or it could very well be a fair bit more effort outside the scope of the project than people realize.

For the price I just can't accept that answer. Once fans decompiled it, they added him in shortly after, surely with stealth and the source code they could do the same.

Managed to locate the og location for the Metropolis 2 mission (it has slightly modified object placement). No luck on the other one tho.

I really don't know what to make of the PPZ1 Tails in the sky clip, since it look to be custom... though he is surrounded entirely by objects.
Concluding that only object placements are changed up (which is pretty expected), and the large grey "X" blocks we've seen are objects as well (definitely way easier than setting up custom level chunks).

Unrelated, the S1 dropdash clip appears to have the annoying horizontal lock for movement after roll-jumping. (Hate that arbitrary mechanic with a passion :argh:) Very surprised that didn't get removed like in CD/Mania.

2013HPZ does reincorporate and flesh out nearly all of the original layout in some form or fashion, be it a "proper" expansion or not.

Fair enough, but you get my point. The original's structure led to a far different pace and format from the remake's.

How they added it is a nice touch, but still easy to overlook, especially since the early games used a lot of similar chunk structures anyway.

I really don't like how jarring the character selection screen is with Sonic 1. It needs some sort of transitionary animation, also having the audio play for a split second after selecting your character before fading out again is awkward.

  20. It's kinda sad that Sonic CD is the probably only game that will have the fancy menu that I love so much (I honestly kinda think 2011 CD's menu is even better than Mania's).
