Well, I will say that maybe I should hold back my opinion until the game comes out. But from what we've seen of the game so far, in my opinion I don't see a Sonic game. Idk what it is, but it's definitely not a Sonic game. (Now Sonic Mania on the other hand, is a Sonic game)

I am honestly lost for words. Gobsmacked. We get to create our own character.... Finally my three-tailed fox fan character from many years ago will come to life :v: The custom character appears to have colors-style gameplay which I like. Can grapple like Batman or whatever and it looks like the wisps have a genuine purpose in the stages this time unlike in SLW. The custom characters gameplay at least looks more interesting than classic or modern's. I get the impression there will be more 2d than 3d stages in Forces which is disappointing. Forces is certainly gonna be an interesting and very divisive game. Yeah, that's all I've got. *shrugs*
I can't tell if the people crying about DeviantArt are serious. Like, are you really incapable of seeing customization as a positive thing? Believe it or not, not all original characters are horrifying garbage. Sonic is a fun universe with an appealing character design paradigm. How dare people want to take part in that? Like, I understand if it's not your thing, but there are people here who legitimately seem to think character creation is an inherently bad idea.
That's like saying Shadow the Hedgehog isn't a Sonic game. Not playing as Sonic doesn't mean crap if the basics (speed, platforming, rings, loops, springs, the works) are still in play. That doesn't automatically make the game GOOD, Shadow is my least favorite entry in the entire series, but it does still make it a Sonic game at its core. ...With the exception of Rise of Lyric.
for once we see eye to eye on something lmao please stop bitching just because it's sonic and OCs nobody cares but you and if you're worried about the external press or anything you need to just grow a thicker skin and enjoy it for what it is look at it this way - when most of us were younger we would LOVED to have seen this - as an older fan, you have Mania to look forward to, if not this as well stop being bitter old farts and let the new generation (and some of us more light-hearted oldfags) have their fun by all means, be skeptical of classic returning, be skeptical of the new gameplay (i think it looks great personally), but just grow up and don't get bent out of shape over a goddamn character creator because it's 'cringey' you are being stereotypically bitter old fans and it's kinda embarassing
I'm a bit surprised by how well Retro reacted to these trailers but looking through comments on youtube reconfirmed just how much Retro is not representative of the general audience's opinion on the franchise and Forces specifically. Overwhelming majority there is unironically exited about the game.
I'm not against the create a character per se, I mean, customization is usually a good thing, but I think the optics are bad, in that it's fodder for the "Sonic is for furries" argument, and it makes the franchise even more nebulous in terms of a coherent identity. It's like niche on sub-culture on niche on fetish, at this point. I know I'm probably the 10th person to say this since I started typing this reply, but why not just star Sonichu?

And according to this you start as the OC and have to save Sonic... Not sure I care for what I'm seeing in terms of the story. Actually come to think of it, Sonic up and disappears and then Robotnik takes over in the mean time. Isn't that basically Sonic the Comic's lore?

Is it though? Is having springs, dash pads, rings, and an obnoxious amount of automation all it takes to be a Sonic game these days? They used to be defined by their gameplay and their style. But I guess since it's been beaten to death anything that checks a box on the archetypal list is now classified as a Sonic game. Not dissing those games or anything, but you have to admit that what Sonic is anymore kind of doesn't matter, since Sonic Team will keep attaching new, potentially bad stuff to the games because they don't know what to do anymore. With that said, they've stuck to a formula that worked for them last time, and has essentially been ingrained into the franchise's DNA, so I'd classify this as a Sonic game (even if the OC thing is a really odd choice)
I didn't hate their writing as much as others (I thought Colors was fine, Lost World would have been ok until it was basically "And nothing happened.") I think people were looking for a darker story, so they might be worried that it's not what they thought it would be. Yea there is a lot to be seen still. Wonder why they decided to start you off with the OC? It seems like a strange way to start a Sonic game, particularly given how in a game with 3 characters, two of them are Sonic and they pick the other one. It's like Mario Golf 64 where you have to unlock Mario :specialed:
The big issue I see with this create a character is having no choice but to play as one to progress through the game or having to be one to be able to play certain levels. I consider that a deal breaker for some. I personally think that all levels should be playable with which ever character you want. In other words the game should be 100% completable with one character.
I honestly don't understand how anyone can write off Colors and ESPECIALLY Lost World story/dialogue as "fine". Well OK maybe Colors is bad but bearable but Lost World is absolute bottom of the barrel. It's not even hilariously bad like Shadow. Just plain terrible.

I just mean that core elements of the series-at least some of them (coughcoughmomentum)- that stick around and are still built into a platformer are indeed elements of a Sonic game. If we were talking something like Sonic Chronicles or Riders, no, those aren't traditional Sonic games. Forces is absolutely a traditional Sonic game. I fully admit that may have been a bit of a knee-jerk reaction on my part though, I just have always hated the argument that a Sonic game isn't a Sonic game and shouldn't be treated as such. Though that's usually more used in defense of the bad games rather than as a point of critique so... I dunno. The takeaway here is that I really, really dislike Shadow the Hedgehog. :v:
It being absolutely hilarious, that Sonic Team went from letting their Social Media become meme peddlers to handing their fans a meme making machine, to the side: they can literally make every single stupid, cringe-inducing, questionable, silly decision they want with this game, in my book (bringing Classic back while Mania exists, 3 gameplay styles to spread themselves thin rather than doubling down on refining the Boost gameplay, muh furry OC DeviantART omg it hurts so much guys, Graff writing again I guess if you still care about story and writing in Sonic games lol?). Because there's already a game whose quality control I care about about coming out. Sonic Forces could literally be a collection of HD remasters of Heroes, Shadow, and 06, and I still couldn't give less of a shit. At least, with what they are doing, I'm now thoroughly entertained. Which, let's face it, outside of new developments like Mania, is about all that Sonic has become good for. :v:
Huh, I just mentioned how I thought it was a bad idea having to play as the OC character first instead of having all 3 characters available at the beginning. It makes sense for the game to make you create your character first so it can come out in cutscenes. But it rubs me the wrong way that I might not be able to play Modern or Classic right away. And I just thought of something. Is modern Sonic going to do all the talking while Classic and buddy just nod away?
^ I was just thinking about that too. I didn't get it, but then how else would they reveal a plot integrated character that'd be involved in cutscenes (unless you customized the character first and then started the story, only to start off playing as Sonic and getting to your character later). I don't know. I guess they didn't phase me that much. I don't value story above all in Sonic games and while they made Tails an absolute twat in Lost World, I like how they've characterized Eggman and I don't mind Sonic having some actual character flaws instead of being "AW YEA, COOL, SUPER POWER OF TEAMWORK, YEA *Insert shit eating grin*." I'll admit, Colors had the cheesy 1 liner here and there and Lost World was pretty bad thanks to the Deadly Six and its "reverse everything to fix everything" plot, but at least it's not filled with SA2's plot holes and space lizards.
