Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) movie

Discussion in 'General Sonic Discussion' started by Dark Sonic, Dec 7, 2013.

  1. I was one who had immediately jumped on the bandwagon of "HOLY SHIT THIS IS GONNA BE AWFUL I THINK THEY JUST KILLED SANIC" for a couple of hours yesterday when this came to. After reading all of the different reactions, and me myself thinking it over, I see that this as another step in expanding the franchise besides Boom. I had also completely forgotten about the Sonic - Progressive Insurance commercial, and tbh, they movie would look perfectly fine if Sonic looked just like that, without any attempts for and "realism" bs with fur and all that horrible jazz. I think everyone here should calm down and wait. We have A: No idea what it looks like, first of all. B: We have no idea what it's going to be about (although to bring up a point made by Clownacy earlier, that I do have this slight fear that it's gonna be one of tose "gets transported from home world to NYC" because that's what happens EVERY FREAKIN TIME and that is really getting on my nerves), and C: We don't know what actors/actresses would be playing the live action parts. We literally have jack shit on this thing, and it's turned into a mini little shit storm over the past 20+ hours. It's like when we saw the shadows of the new Sonic Boom character designs, and we all flipped out over roid Knuckles, and now, the design isn't really that bad (at least, that's how I've seen most of the fanbase react to it as of now after looking at it for a couple of months). Just wait and see people.

"S-O-N-I-C" is a strange way of saying + - "Equestria Girls 2: Rainbow Rocks"   .

    Get on my level.

+ - Granted, I'll probably just watch a YouTube upload of a camrip like last time, because fuck that noise of driving for two or three hours to actually watch it in theatres   .

    EDIT:

I have been tempered in the drama-nuke surrounding [THAT WHICH SHALL NOT BE NAMED SANS SPOILERS]'s fandom, so this should be a piece of cake in comparison. That said, I'd like to know how tall Sonic is going to be. Is he going to be 3 to 4 feet tall? Or are we talking full blown Hop's E.B. rabbit height?

  3. Well, the day has finally come. Its almost surreal in a way, but also polarizing. After years of the media trolling us about a feature film. Countless failed efforts at fan films (including mine). Shot down industry professionals who were versed in Sonic lore (Ben Hurst, Ken Penders, and Matt Sullivan). Sega, the company that has been overprotected of their movie rights decides to relinquish them to the most incompetent people in Hollywood. Sony Pictures? The Smurfs and Amazing Spiderman movies? Live Action / CGI? Produced by Neil Moritz? The dude thats been involved with such cinematic gems such as Fast and Furious, Battle of Los Angeles, Total Recall remake and R.I.P.D.? LOL oh man. This will be a spectacular disaster. All these years, waiting, speculating, and hoping for a theatrical Sonic movie has immediately been dashed.

It will still probably be better than other shot down Sonic movies considering the people who were involved. A Sonic movie by Ken Penders would have been an amazing disaster.

Someone's already probably said it but it can't possibly be worse than that fan film.

Unless they decide to adapt Sonic Live. :v:

This would be great if it were made like the first set of Turtles movies, a little dark and a little risque. As much as I dislike SatAM, it'd make a great starting point for a live action film.

  7. If you go to see this in theaters and an overly paranoid mother starts to act super defensive of her kids, you just say, "Don't flatter yourself, I have to write a review on this for a website."

Yeah, I was gonna say - if you're viewing Ken Penders as a master of writing then you REALLY have whacked priorities.

I don't think he was saying Penders was a master of writing; just that he knew the Sonic universe(s) well. Having knowledge doesn't mean a person can actually write anything good about it, though. :P

Ben Hurst could've done something cool, and he had some interesting ideas for a SatAM continuation but with him dead that's unlikely to happen. =/

  10. True, Ken Penders is an egotistical wackjob, but if were comparing him to Neil Moritz, at least Penders wasn't involve with shit movies. Yeah I know, choosing one or the other is like picking your poison. But why should it even come to that? Why couldn't have Sega diligently shopped around for a reputable studio and recruit a team that actually has a passion for film making, storytelling and posses some knowledge of the franchise? This is a complete turn around from how Sega dealt with their property rights in the 00s. Those pitch meetings I attended back in 2007 were held at FOX, Dreamworks, Universal, and DiC. At least those studios have credibility while Sony Pictures in general has produced embarrassingly bad films. Original concepts, remakes, and adaptations. If Sega is this eager to jump on the first offer without carefully selecting a production team that wont tarnish their reputation, then they must be financially desperate. It seems like another inept business decision to throw all their cards on the table like this. Sonic is over saturated as it is and here we have a spin off TV show, reboot game franchise and a series of movies. Are they just placing a gamble on what works? Its just so strange to me cause their attitude has drastically changed since the last couple years. I recall my initial meeting at Sega of America. Sega of Japan was uptight about choosing a studio and had strict criteria to live up to. Now, it seems anything is game. Again, it seems suspicious for a company to sporadically be this lenient with their movie rights knowing how stubborn and reserved they were.

    Working on my art!
Penders is involved in plenty of awful projects. That alone makes him worse already. Also your thing wasn't too hot either IIRC (Metallic Hoedown comes to mind). So maybe Sega didn't pick up your guys' projects because they didn't like them. Maybe Sega did go to Sony because they felt like it was time to make a movie, and they still do have some control over it since their CG studio is working on the CG.

Plus I didn't find the Amazing Spiderman movies that bad.

The fact that Sony is more than happy to rush the shit out of their films for a quick buck (such as the clusterfuck that is Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel) does not give me confidence in this project. The production and the end product still remains to be seen, though.

  13. I agree, but at least he has knowledge of the franchise and thats at least "something" to contribute. In all honesty, as much I despise the guy, hes more credible to be involved in a Sonic film cause he, unlike this Neil hack has an understanding of the mythology.

But fuck Penders. I just feel its more conducive to the film's development if they attach people that have a strong history of the franchise and are passionate enough to do it justice. I just hate watching these cartoon based movies rehash the same damn concept. Its all about making a quick buck on a lazy production with a cliche storyline that most live action/CG animal movies are notorious for. I don't care if its about SatAM or not. It can even be about Sonic Boom for all I care...or maybe something completely in its own realm. I just want a competent production crew that harbors a reputable track record to helm something this ambitious.

I rather have someone who doesn't know much about Sonic and would make something generic make the movie than Ken Penders.

Yeah, Ken's gone completely fucking nutbar lately. He thinks he's the only reason Sonic was ever popular. Pfft.

  18. Found a sneak peek, looks like they're incorporating the Riders series somehow.

    Made you look, butthead.

  19. Yeah, they're likely to have in-production shots this soon in pre-production, right?

:v:/> jk though I see some taking that one seriously.

As for Penders... he'll probably be demanding credit in the movie ALA Harlan Ellison did for The Terminator.

I wonder how Penders would try to claim credit if this movie went Fleetway STC combined with Sonic X lol

But seriously, I have an excellent reason for it not reference the comics as source material. It's not using the comics as source material =P
