I've played both the 3DS and the WiiU version. It is definitely not about lack of speed, you can run at a decent speed for sure. My issue is that as soon as you make a tight left or right turn, you completely slow down.

Try running in a circle on the 3DS version and sonic maintains his speed, you can run in a nice speedy circle. the WiiU one will have you constantly slowing down, very irritable for a veteran Sonic player.

The 3DS engine limitations do show up on bosses though:

The boss is far harder and in my opinion more of a challenge on the 3ds. That boss is piss easy on WiiU.

Bosses are generally better on the 3DS. Aside from the one with the emo guy, which uses annoying gyro controls.

Speaking of those, the special stages annoy me because of them, and I only have 3 emeralds so far because of it.

Oh yeah, I think they're the worst special stages from any Sonic game because of those gyro controls. They would have been fine if I could just use the circle pad, but nope gotta spin around in my chair and aim my 3DS upwards.

    Working on my art!
I have to wonder if Nintendo forced Sega to shoehorn in these motion/gyroscope controls or if they felt like it was a good idea.

Considering Nintendo's own developers barely make use of those gimmicks in their games, I doubt that Nintendo forced them to.

Considering how all of Nintendo's first party games coming out for the Wii U this year support the Pro Controller except maybe Wii Party U, the fact Lost World refuses to support it in single player and mandates some odd controls should make it clear to everyone that Nintendo did not force SEGA to do impliment gyroscope controls in Lost World. One of the main reasons why Lost World is a Wii U exclusive is because Sonic Team had a lot of interest in the Wii U GamePad's features so I'm pretty sure they wanted all of the dumb gyro stuff that got implemented in the game.

It is true, but they're heavily compressed and not very good quality.

    Trapped in my own thoughts.
Two stageplays, a screenplay, and an album
What, you don't like formulaically adding unnecessary adjectives before every possible noun (and ridiculous adverbs before solitary verbs), for the sake of poorly lengthening an otherwise excessively short review in order to lazily reach a required word count?

  14. When I beat the final boss I automatically unlocked the game's music in Tails' lab, so this is either false or the Sound Test contains other tracks and/or sound effects.

  15. George Carlin's "soft language" bit comes to mind when I see crap like that review.

I allways figured Sonic was just a living debug mode, this pretty much proves it.

    Physics is his bitch.

So I caved a couple of days ago and bought the 3DS version after remembering I had some spare cash in my sock drawer.

I got all the Chaos Emeralds about three hours ago and finished the game about an hour ago. My thoughts?

After the trilogy of Unleashed/Colours/Generations, I was extremely wary of this game. Sonic Team had finally nailed a formula that I really enjoyed and seeing them deviate from that was kind of worrying - but nonetheless, I thought that they've proven themselves lately, going from strength to strength in recent years. Now, I know this version was developed by Dimps but we have Sonic Team to thank for the core gameplay and level design principles - just thought I'd get that out of the way...

That said, I'm not too let down. I'm not one to slam reviewers because they didn't like the game. I'm not going to sit here and bitch and moan about IGN, Polygon or Edge because they gave it a low score - they have every right to do so and the worst part of it all is, I can see exactly why they all gave the game such a scathing review. There are several parts of the experience that risk blemishing the whole and I'd be lying if I said there weren't parts of the game later on that had me seething with rage. In fact, Silent Forest Act 3 had me just about ready to throw my 3DS at a wall.

There's also terrible design choices here and there. Some of the levels are just totally out of place in a Sonic game, for instance the Desert Ruins stage where you have to hunt for switches or the Frozen Factory stage stuffed to the brim with snowballs and holes to put them - these levels just didn't feel all that fun to me and while I was happy to play through them once, I don't think I'm going to be going back for S-ranks for a little while at least. Speaking of terrible design choices though, the use of the 3DS' gyro sensor takes the crown. Anyone who's played this version's special stages will know where I'm coming from. They're absolutely terrible and you need to be standing up with a full 360 degree space around you - oh, and there better not be anyone else within fifty yards or you're going to look like the biggest cunt going. Seriously, the worst special stages in a Sonic game yet - if only because they're so great in theory and so absolutely terribad in execution.

So there's plenty to be critical about - what can we praise? Well, for one, the visuals are absolutely gorgeous. The game just looks the absolute tits throughout. Bright colours, smooth textures and some of the cleanest edges I've seen on a 3DS game yet. The soundtrack is also great. You have traditional Sonic-y music like Wonder World (which some people think sounds really Mario, though I'm not entirely convinced about that), Windy Hill Act 1 and Frozen Factory Act 1 and then you an amazing amount of musical variety in the other tracks, all somehow managing to fit the feel of the game extremely well.

I've got to mention the cut scenes. Following on from Colours extremely nicely, Lost World has an absolutely fantastic script with some genuinely quite funny moments and a great atmosphere surrounding it. It's maintaining the whole comical side of things started in Unleashed and Colours and running with it - except this time, things are starting to get fleshed out a little. 'Sonic's World' is referred to more, we finally get properly introduced to Knuckles and Amy (Big props for not immediately throwing the entire supporting cast back in, guys) and in seeing Sonic, Tails and Eggman all teaming up, we get a great idea of exactly who their new canonical personalities are and how they interact with each other - I mean, since Colours we've known that Sonic is a wise-ass hothead (which is cool because it gives him a tangible weakness), Tails is a smart and quick-witted kid and Eggman is a typical comic villain. In Lost World, these traits are expanded upon when we get to see, for example, how Sonic reacts to Eggman when he's not just throwing insults and banter his way. The same can be said of Eggman - more of his personality shines through as he's not only in frame when trying to crush Sonic. It's just fantastic and I find it hard to explain so I'd say you have to either play the game or watch it on the tubes to really get what I mean but needless to say, seeing Eggman and Sonic being civil in the post-Unleashed canon is extremely odd but really, really cool.

Back to the gameplay, the amount of alternate paths is quite nice too, on both the linear stages and the more gimmick-y ones. There were several times when a certain obstacle would be starting to really irritate me, I'd notice an entirely different way of doing it and that felt great. More of that, please, Dimps and Sonic Team. Finally, I know I mentioned the special stages being an absolute dick - but the payoff is kind of worth it. Super Sonic is actually fucking great in this game. The only differences between him and vanilla Sonic is faster ground speed, higher jumps and more air control and invincibility. Basically exactly how he behaved in the Mega Drive titles, then - which is, frankly, fantastic. It's also cool how you can even use him in boss fights - it lets you turn the final boss from a normal Sonic vs. Eggman fight into a Super Sonic finale, which is cool. Sonic Colours seemed to be sorely missing that option, if I recall correctly.

All in all, a pretty good experience marred by a few excruciatingly frustrating segments and some horrible design choices in places. In terms of audio and visuals, it's damned-near perfect in my eyes and I'm still loving this whole cartoon atmosphere the series has had since Colours and to a lesser extent, Unleashed, and I really hope they keep pushing on with that. The parts that work are absolutely fantastic but the parts that don't really come close to ruining the experience and perhaps, for someone less patient than myself, may very well do just that. If you're on the fence about getting it, I really doubt I could safely tell you whether or not you'll enjoy it - however, if you have £30 burning a hole in your pocket, you could do a lot worse than Sonic Lost World for the 3DS.
