It's like I'm playing an official fangame!

Puto's suggestion fixed that for me, changing the language while in-game should do it.

I will love you indefinitely if you send those over my way. *u* Might have to convert 'em on my end, but oh wells.

Sseriously, Tax, Stealth, you've gone way over the top with this game. Keep it up with Sonic 2!

If you want the OGG music files for the main menu and the intro, here are the links:

    http://yalb.ath.cx/sonic1-2013/ext/MenuIntro.ogg
    http://yalb.ath.cx/sonic1-2013/ext/MainMenu.ogg

I guess I can make an unpacker for the whole package, if there's a need.

Part of me suspects that Hidden Palace Zone was originally going to be the special stages in Sonic 2, not unlike the special stages in Triple Trouble. It'd be pretty cool if there was an option to replace the half-pipe special stages with 7 acts of HPZ, with an Emerald for each act.

We already have it on record what HPZ was intended to be, thanks to Naka: a playable cutscene single-act level that was designed to ham up the fact you unlocked Super Sonic as a big deal. You'd be transported to it after getting the seventh emerald and receive Super Sonic there.

Something like this old school hoax.

Other than time, one of the problems came from being able to warp you back to the level proper you were on when entering the special stage after finishing HPZ. Putting it as a complete new level would make it horribly incomplete and boring as it is, since it has no gimmick of its own and is rather barren.

If they do do Sonic 2, and they do do Hidden Palace... get the soundtrack right. This tune that sounds like a prehistoric stage. One that, idk, might have dinosaurs in it as opposed to this unfitting track that was debunked back in 2011

for the record the remastered soundtrack has made it onto YouTube, albeit not in its best possible form. I do like these remasters... although there are slight discrepancies when it comes to volume. Mind you all Mega Drives sounded ever-so-slightly different back in 1991 so I guess it might not matter

I don't know, I still think if it was to be added that they should use the one we always associate with HPZ since it sounds more 'mysterious' or 'special' for the Super Sonic transformation thing.

It looks like the game is skipping a "screen lock" for some reason, which would surely qualify as a bug.

    Please do report.

I wish we knew where it ranked specifically before and after the update. Kudos to you Stealth, Taxman and everyone else who chipped in. Your work is fucking fantastic.

Shit, I wish I would've actually looked at this then because I could've thrown something together in a few minutes. I already knew how the file table was structured, hence my post last week about there being 322 files in it. I don't think it's MD5 though, unless 0xefcdab89, 0x98badcfe, 0x162dd00 and 0x10325476 are numbers generally involved in an MD5 calculation.
Without access to a jailbroken device, I started by looking at the filesystem instead of looking for encryption.

Edit: Half-assed unpacker added to the appropriate thread. Maybe some day I'll work on the filenames and decryption, but why bother?

So what are the unlockables in this? I've already beaten the game twice with all 6 emeralds, but how do I gain the ability to get 7 outside of the level select? Are there any other secrets we're still not aware of, or anything else that's been found? Which levels have paths that are Tails/Knuckles exclusive?

Interesting information about Hidden Palace Zone, when I read this I couldn't help but think of what would happen if someone worked hard to get all the emeralds but ended up losing all their lives on this extra zone, surely it would be pretty frustrating. I can understand why the level was taken out if this was the only way to access it, especially for the type of people who loved being able to beat the first Sonic games as fast as they could. Adding an extra level that was just story based what have slowed things down considerably.

Correct me if I am wrong but wasn't the big green Emerald (the supposed Master Emerald) confirmed by a member of the S2 staff to have just been a standard breakable object? I think Hidden Palace is a beautiful looking level amd agree that the version we have of it now is very incomplete and has a boring layout. Unless there is a version still owned by Sega with a more complete level outline of Hidden Palace, some sor tof level design document, or a member of the original staff who worked on it, Hidden Palace wouldn't be worth it. I think the teams that worked on the Genesis Sonic games had an incredible understanding of what makes a level great and I don't think anyone would be able to replicate the quality of levels that they produced.

I do want to know if the two player mode will make it in somehow for Sonic 2. It should still be doable for tablet owners ala something similar to this: [IMG]

Or if theres controllers plugged into the device, it could potentially orient the splitscreens in the correct direction otherwise. I do hope that feature makes it in somehow.

We have a ton of Sonic 2 prototypes that show that HPZ never got much more further along in terms of level design than what we know of. It became more pertinent to the team to finish up other levels first. By the time the focus finally turned back to HPZ, the dev cycle was already coming to a close with the release date looming and it was ultimately decided to just kill it and throw Super Sonic in in a way that people WILL discover it.

Say hi to one-jump Super Sonic transformation.

Thanks to the people who've mentioned BlueStacks in this thread, I've gone and bought the Android version of this in spite of not having a phone that'll run it - partially because I wanted to try it out for myself and partly because, at only just over £2, it didn't exactly cost much to support this and gamble that my computer would emulate it at a decent speed - which, rather pleasingly, it did. = ) Seems very well-put-together so far - I'm up to the beginning of Labyrinth Zone, and aside from the issue that's been mentioned elsewhere of getting stuck under a certain bumper in Spring Yard Zone, which was annoying but not unresolvable, I've encountered no issues to this point!

Many congratulations to Taxman and Stealth on this release - hopefully there'll be call for console/PC versions if the phone versions are successful enough, as I'd certainly support them. Though ideally, if PC versions were to happen my dream would be a collection release of Sonic 1/2/3&K and CD in a bundle - that way, it could be used as an excuse to release a proper native PC version of the CD remake with all the bugfixes that the phone versions have received, rather than the port of the console version that SEGA have currently released.

Man I totally want Sega to release a physical copy of Sonic's Taxman collection. Probably throw Sonic 4 in as a bonus. I hate games that are digital only.

So I got the game via Bluestacks, and it works perfectly (aside from the special stages slowing down like hell), though I can't access debug mode due to lacking the ability to perform two simultaneous touch inputs. There's also the curious issue of being unable to roll while pressing left/right and down simultaneously, though that's hardly a game-breaking issue.

I'll probably buy it on iOS as well to support Tax's efforts. I already have two copies of Sonic CD on both iOS and Steam, after all.

Edit: Turns out the special stages don't have a low framerate, it just seems slow initially if you don't speed up the rotation. Or not. I can't really tell.
