I can't get the thing to run, no matter what video config I use, so I guess it's time to re-download it.
You don't have to completely reinstall the game. In Steam right click on the game, go to properties, click on local files and than click on verify integrity of game cache..., if one of your games on Steam doesn't work than it's best to do this first.
Yeah, I tried that and everything was fine. Even deleted some files to force it to download them again (and hopefully any that were missed) but no luck Edit: Clean install didn't work. I get the loading screen but it immediatly crashes to desktop. I'v disabled Surround, ran it in all kinds of refresh rates and it still does the same.
Don't feel bad; it starts for me, but runs at like 10fps. >Can max nearly every game at 60fps >Can't run Dreamcast game.
That's a deal-breaker right there. What the shit, why can't anyone get this right anymore? I really want this game, but if I can't change my button mappings (or axis mappings, for that matter) I'm likely going to be stuck with a very awkward control scheme. I suppose if the game uses xinput I can work around it with x360ce, but really, that's some bullshit.
So, I tried the 360 demo. Clearly this is not a Tony Hawk game. In my tired state, I'm trying to adjust to the controls. I keep 'tapping' A near rails thinking I'll just latch onto them -- you know, like when you hold A to glide in the air well in advance over to a rail that's further away? I keep expecting the same thing to happen when I just want to nudge over to a rail that's close by, yet it goes undetected. Right Trigger makes you boost when pressed, holding RT makes you boost for a short time, but pressing RT twice in a row... only counts the first press? Er, what? I get the feeling I'm overthinking the control setup. Would any Jet Set vets care to slap the Hawk out of me with an explanation? Hm, having to either wait for text to auto-advance itself or press A once to skip the whole demonstration feels like slightly more of a buzzkill than it should. Evidently I've been taking the standard "press A to advance text on your own time or press Start to skip the demo" for granted... Ah, also... this is widescreen, correct? So why is there a giant-ass black boarder around the gamescreen following the Sega Heritage logo?
I played the PS3 demo quickly before I went out this morning, and was a bit disappointed that the textures haven't been retouched. I know it's a quick cash in downloadable title, but it's a shame that the graphics weren't treated the same way as the music, as both were integral to the feel of the original game. Still I love Jet Set Radio, and immediately went to buy cone Playstation Store credit as I've maxed out my debit card. I hope that they give JSRF the same treatment, as I've always wanted to play it, and it seems a tad silly to buy an X Box just for the privilege. The trophies are pretty pathetic though. I imagine I'll 100% them this evening.
So there are still references to Yappie Feet's individual ADX tracks within the Jet Set Radio exe, amongst all the other tracks (The seperate loop, intro and changeover tracks) in alphabetical order. The JetADX folder is empty, music seems to be in a .arc of some sort. Using cheat engine in the sound test allowed me to change what song loaded, but it crashed when I set it to 27 or 28. Changing the song number would instantly change the text on the radio, but the song would only change if you pressed left or right. It's doubtful that you'd find Yappie Feet this way. You can't set your spray cans higher than the default values for each character just by changing the actual value for the spray cans. There has to be more to it. Just incase any of that helps or not.
I went ahead and bought the game because I read that people were having success using x360ce with JSR. Sadly, no such luck for me. Plus the framerate is fucking abysmal, and my PC far exceeds the recommended system requirements. *sigh*
Right, so for those having FPS issues: Restart your computer. I know, it's incredibly dumb but it actually works!
I bought the game last night, and I think I've spent a cumulative total of an hour and a half trying to get a 50 combo for the tutorial. Usually it's my Achievement-induced fervor guiding me on something like this...but this time I just find it incredibly demeaning that I can't beat the tutorial. I know there's pretty much a square you can grind around the place for a long time, but my jumps just seem to fall short on the railway with the sign. Gotta go tag
This man speaks the truth. I was getting like 10fps when I first got it, restarted and now it runs perfect.
How does that even make sense? It worked. Still can't map my gamepad controls to something that makes sense, though.
There's a way to cheat at that one. It tells you to do 50 right after you do 30; if you don't touch the ground after getting 30 and keep going, it doesn't reset your trick count. I've got a question, though. How the heck do you do a turn trick? It tells you to push forward and back after boosting, and I did that a million times and got nothing.
They gave you the instructions backwards for the turn trick; it's Boost then back then forward. Also it's been awhile since I played the tutorial back on the Dreamcast version, but aren't there a few steps between the 30 and 50 trick parts?
Funnily enough I just played the tutorial again and it gave the 50 trick one last. The first time I got 30 and then 50, and then the turn instructions. No idea what happened there. Anyway, thanks for the help on that SoNick.
So I've been playing the re-release of this (never played it before) and I have to say I'm having a lot of fun so far! The general style of this game is so colourful and popping, and I love it! But this game is quite flawed however, especially in the control department. Not that this isn't already known about JSR yet but whatever. For the most part I'd call it merely clunky and hard to get used too, but there are some level designs that bring out THE WORST in the controls, such as the one place in Benten-Cho that has the circular tower of rails with a little circular platform which you for the most part are forced to stop on it to choose which rail you want to ride. And Grind City Square can die in a fire, because if you're just a bit off you fall down from a huge height and lose health, and then you have to take the lift back up! But as frustrating as it can get, it's hella fun when you get used to the control quirks, and in my opinion it makes up for those quirks with it's awesome-looking cell-shaded graphics and style. All in all, having tons of fun with it.
I've been curious about this series for a few years now, watching walkthroughs of it (and Jet Set Radio Future), listening to the music and such, so it made me pretty happy that I finally got to try it, and I gotta say, it's pretty damn fun. Really like the character design, love the music, and it's somewhat easy to get used too. Well, sort of. The controls can be quite a pain at times, especially at certain points of the game. I do have a bit of nitpicking though... The controls can sometimes screw with you, especially in places where you skate up a quarter pipe and half pipe. It seems like you might turn the opposite direction than you're aiming for. I also hated that section when you have to beat, well, Beat with Combo (where you have to jump up to the stairs). Also that ledge at the top of the stairs screwed me over too, causing me to turn around if you jump at the wrong time. It might be just me, but taking out the Noise Tanks seems a lot harder than Poison Jam and Love Shockers, but I guess that's mostly due to the Noise Tanks grinding all over the place, and the hills really cripple the Love Shockers. ...And yeah, Grind City. Chaos Warp pretty much hit the nail on the head, especially when those copters arrive. Lastly, the cars...they annoyed me, but what just happened recently baffled me. I made it to Center Street in Shibuya, grind, painting, the cutscene triggers while I'm in the air. After landing, I got hit by a car, sent me back onto another car, which drove me right out of the level. What the hell?! I believe I'm just about done with the game. Other than those nitpicks, it's a pretty cool game. I might even try JSRF if I ever get the opportunity. It does disappoint me though, remembering that SEGA rejected Jet Set Radio for the Wii, but maybe...it might return, once SEGA gets things sorted out. Maybe.
I was going to ask what the hell was wrong with you but then I realized the PS3 only has 9 trophies while the 360 has 30 achievements. So yes, the PS3 version is piss easy to complete while the 360 version is not. Does Steam use the 360 achievements then?
