    No it doesn't.

I could have sworn I've posted this before, though! Oh, wait.

I knew that I had done it without super sonic before. I just couldn't pull it off for the life of me while recording. And I also searched to try to make sure none of this was mentioned before and I came up with nothing relevant. So I guess my whole post was one big derp. Sorry.

All right, let's put this in the RIGHT thread.

I'd always known there were a few oddities and secrets about Final Egg, but this is one of the more interesting -- I suppose it's probably relatively common knowledge but deserves to get some sort of a mention. Besides, the differences here were initially small enough as to always confuse me; the camera changes in this bit didn't help much either.

Hopefully this picture gets you the idea of where we are. It's just after the second section with the "Beat" enemies.

If we go in that hole, there's a tunnel, and a drop. At the bottom, there's this:
Note the bottomless pit. There are fans and platforms around to get you where you need to go. The springs ahead of us will take us near to a 1-up and speed shoes, but they're hard to get due to that pit.

But we can jump over that tunnel! If we do, we end up here. There's a super ring item, and an entrance to another section like that tunnel and drop, which is part of the reason it's confusing.

At the bottom, it gets interesting!
There's no pit here! This ends up usually being my way through the level. Note the remains of 4 super rings and a rocket back up. Much safer than the other route, but no 1-up or shoes.

With the debug mode enabled, I also took this picture. Note that this is where the hallways you go after the pits lead to. Perhaps a bit counterintuitively, the path with the pit exits higher up than the other one.

This whole stage of Final Egg is probably one of the most interesting parts of the whole game aside from a couple bits in Hot Shelter, the big room in Lost World with the antigravity panels, and the final segment of Speed Highway, due to the many different paths (and also lots of well-hidden secrets and items in some of the other rooms as well).

Sure, there's not much different between the two paths, but the fact that they actually ARE different is worth noting. I was never 100% sure on where they met up though, so this helps in that regard; for some reason I had my suspicion that they branched in different directions.

I dunno if anyone has ever figured this out in Sonic Labyrinth, but Slant actually equals straight control, and vise versa. They kind of fucked that up... The difference is with slant, Sonic obviously is supposed to slant a little bit if any of the directional buttons are pressed, but instead faces forward. And straight, well he slants a little. :v:

Straight relative to the perspective of the screen, or the direction of the floor tiles?

When I have the option set to "straight" on my copy of the game, pressing down causes me to go straight down. That's what I expect and, honestly, the option I prefer.

  6. There's a glitch in the Master System version of Sonic 1, the last Robotnik fight (where he's behind a glass shield). It's possible to get behind the shield by hitting him once and then doing a short jump toward him. You can damage him this way, and it does make the fight easier, but if you fail to get it right the first time around you'll die by the lightning thing. I saw used in a TAS of the Game Gear version as well.

Will have to try that next time I play sonic 1 sms, I love that last boss as it was hard yet somehow rather fun compared to the megadrive final boss.

    MIDI-to-SMPS-conversions, mostly. Takin' requests, too.
The base version of Sonic Heroes upon which all other ports are based appears to be the Gamecube one; based upon the fact that the PC port contains a lot of files specific to the Gamecube version that serve no purpose other than being left over from the 'cube version. They're in special versions of Renderware formats that I, so far, have only encountered in Gamecube versions of games.

Oh my God, my childhood memories can confirm this! : D

So like, a while ago I was thinking about a post ICEknight made on the Sonic 2 Heroes topic:

Then all of a sudden something sprang to mind!

Ok, so we're all clear that Sonic 3's special stages each use a simplified version of the palette of each stage in the game, if we include Flying Battery in its original position. I'll even include the 7th stage as seen in S3K for the hell of it here.

What about Sonic & Knuckles? Well... S&K's is really weird.

Mushroom Hill, Lava Reef (2), Hidden Palace, and Sky Sanctuary all match up well. Death Egg and Doomsday are pushing it but seem to have inspired 2 of them as well.

But for some reason they chose an ugly as sin background for the third special stage that doesn't fit any level well (if they'd made the pink more orange and the green darker it would fit Lava Reef 1 well), and Sandopolis Zone doesn't have anything to match up with. Similarly the pattern for the 7th stage seems to have come out of left field. Futhermore, if these matchups are in any way "correct", they're all out of order compared to the stage progression. Now, the second stage might fit Mushroom Hill 2's palette as well, but not based only on foreground tiles like the other stages.

So yeah, all I can say is, WTF? :psyduck:

EDIT: Am I the only one who thought the fourth special stage was the hardest, at least due to being the least forgiving? Fascinating it seems to match up best with the last full level in the game. Coincidence? Mmmmmaybe.

    Um, what?

Pink + Cyan = Sandopolis? I am confuse.

EDIT: Oh wait, the sky. I guess that kinda fits.

idk I think you mixed up Sandopolis' zone theme with Lava Reef Act 2 but that's just me.

That's in some ways my point; none of them really fit with Sandopolis. There's definitely nothing that shade of green in the second stage matches with in Sandopolis.

Not only that, but Sonic has three different running animations in the beta if I remember correctly. That GIF seems to be two of them combined.

EDIT: Actually, I think I made that GIF back when I found those animations, so sorry for the confusion. =P

    Hint: Filename!

I'm just checking if this is common knowledge or not; I've only noticed it a few minutes ago.

Yes, it is common knowledge. It is explained here: Sonic_3_%26_Knuckles_chronology_and_endings#Knuckles_After_Sonic.3F, even though there's not that particular screenshot or LRZ1 (and I don't think it is needed, either, there are already more than enough screenshots on that page as it is now).

edit: quoted original post because of the new page.

Thing is, I've been aware of the Death Egg's presence in LRZ2 and HPZ for a very long time but noticing it in LRZ1 was completely new to me. I'm just wondering who else had this thought; oh well, it's something small and its a nice touch to detail, anyway.

Then take a screenshot at the same place with Knuckles and edit the wiki, the fact that I wouldn't do that doesn't imply that you shouldn't ;)

edit: just make sure to optimise it:
[IMG] (yours: 23799 bytes; mine: 10704 bytes) :)

edit2: I was bored enough to take a Knuckles screenshot by my own :U
    [IMG]

But since you're better than me at writing stuff in English, I won't be editing the wiki article, and I'll leave that to you :)

I've never really been sold on the S&K special stage colours having any connection to the level palettes, personally. The S3 ones definitely do, but I suspect that may be a relic of a different idea of how to access them, particularly since it wasn't changed to account for the removal of FBZ. The S&K palettes turned up late in the game, since they change during the S3C/S&K betas, and may not have been created with the same intent.
