I've always assumed that Mephiles is released from the sceptre and transports Shadow and Rouge (and himself) to the future, because he wants to search for Iblis there. Here, he finds the purple emerald and baits Silver into going to the present to kill Sonic, which will release Iblis in the present and allow him to merge with it in the future (he's filling the blanks, like Rouge is when she remembers Omega in the future and looks for him in the present). He then tries to merge with future Iblis (wether before, during or after the fight Sonic/Shadow have against Iblis) but is unable to (Iblis and Mephiles are seen side by side and that's why Shadow doesn't go with the others into the present). Then he changes tactics and tries to bait Shadow into working with him. He obviously loses and opens a portal to the present. He has discovered he can't merge with Iblis in the future, so he needs to try in another timeline. Shadow and Omega follow him and arrive in the present. There are other issues with Shadow and Silver in the past, but Mephiles never leaves the present. He hides himself in the Desert and fights Shadow when he returns (at this point, he has the three emeralds: purple, yellow and green, but only uses the last two for the demonstration). He gets beat again and flees, leaving the two (yellow and green) emeralds behind, but takes the purple with him. He then kills Sonic with that emerald.

You're saying there are two Mephiles? :psyduck:

I wonder why the fuck his shoes and rings change colors then. Are they mood rings? Then again his streaks also changed colors too...

So, wait, guys ... Sonic '06 was trying to be Chrono Trigger?

    ...

Because if it succeeded, that would've been awesome.

As far as I remember he only has 2 files in the game. His crystal form, and his normal form. The differences you see are because of the area lighting.

That "Head for the Train Terminal" scene is REALLY problematic. Iirc, that SINGLE scene is the only time non-crystal Mephs is in the present (aside from that brief period immediatly after breaking out of the Scepter in Kingdom Valley).

Mist Mephs: Mephiles gets created at the Solaris project (Has 0 Emeralds)
Mist Mephs: Then sealed in the Scepter for 10 years (Has 0 Emeralds)
Shadow Mephs: Then goes from Kingdom Valley to the future with Shadow & Rouge (Has 0 Emeralds)
Shadow Mephs: Finds the purple Emerald in the future somewhere? (Has purple Emerald)
Shadow Mephs: Then he sends Silver & Blaze to the past (Has purple Emerald)
Shadow Mephs: Then he apparently sits around in the future for a while (Has purple Emerald)
Shadow Mephs: Then he confronts Shadow in Mephiles Phase 1 and becomes Crystal Meph (Has purple Emerald)
Crystal Meph: Flees back to the present via a portal (Has purple Emerald)
Crystal Meph: Gets chased around Soleanna by Omega, Shadow, and Rouge (Has purple Emerald)
Crystal Meph: Goes to Dusty Desert for the Yellow Emerald (Purple + Yellow)
Crystal Meph: Fights Shadow as Mephiles Phase 2 (Purple + Yellow)
Crystal Meph: Suddenly has Shadow's green one and the yellow emerald in a cutscene (Purple + Yellow + Green)
Crystal Meph: Apparently goes to skewer Sonic, using the purple Emerald (Purple + Yellow + Green)
Crystal Meph: Suddenly has all 7 for the fusion with Iblis (All 7?!?!?!)

I bet Robotnik REALLY wishes he could do whatever trick Mephiles pulls off between those last 2 scenes. Just clicks his fingers, and BAM! Suddenly he's more than doubled his Emerald count. :S

Despite the fact that I held to the above sequence of events for a long time, and it makes sort of sense, that fucking "Head for the Train Terminal" scene screws it all up because it's got Shadow Mephiles in Soleanna Present, which he NEVER GOES TO as far as all the rest of the game is concerned. fffffffffffff

  7. If you look at the beta content, there is a LOT of stuff that didn't make it—even in the IGN previews-- There's an area in Kingdom Valley where you have to light dash to get over a large hole, in the IGN preview, the player misses the light dash, and hovers in the air—in the demo and the final, there is no such hovering object—you just fall to your death.

All in all, I think SEGA ought to 'rehash' this game, finish it, and it will be a strong title. Stop re releasing SADX, re-release this, I'm sure if it played well we could deal with the weird story.

I always assumed that went to the present after Silver and Blaze while still Shadow Mephs, and returns to the future sometime after telling them to go to the terminal.

By that time Shadow has already fought Mephiles in the future, so I see no reason for him to go back to the future.

EDIT: Wait...Do I have this right? Shadow doesn't go back to the future after going to the past with Silver, right?

Actually, yeah, I'm right. Shadow has already fought Mephiles in the future when he goes to the past with Silver.

Well, yeah, that's indeed what the "Head for the train terminal" scene requires us to think. It slaps a whole extra 200 years in Mephiles' story, though, so it now goes like this:

Mist Mephs: Mephiles gets created at the Solaris project (Has 0 Emeralds)
Mist Mephs: Then sealed in the Scepter for 10 years (Has 0 Emeralds)
Shadow Mephs: Then goes from Kingdom Valley to the future with Shadow & Rouge (Has 0 Emeralds)
Shadow Mephs: Finds the purple Emerald in the future somewhere? (Has purple Emerald)
Shadow Mephs: Then he sends Silver & Blaze to the past (Has purple Emerald)

...And goes to the past himself, to do nothing more than mutter "Train Terminal". It's possible that he portals back to the future offscreen later, but I've got an alternative idea. This is the timeline where the Egg Carrier crashes (for no apparent reason) and kills Elise, and causes the Crisis City fire-world. I suspect that Mephiles orchestrated this, accidentally or intentionally because he thought that killing Elise might release a fusable Iblis. Transpires no, he does have to be released by crying for Iblis to be any use to Mephiles... but Mephs doesn't know this for certain. So he spends TWO HUNDERD YEARS trying, in the flaming wastes after the Day of Disaster.

He certainly seems to know a lot about the intervening years, given that he's able to exlain to Shadow about the human witch-hunts after the world was burned. And he's got Shadow's frozen corpse on finger-snap call, which suggests a degree of familiarity with the whole place.

Anyway, he stews for 200 years, steadily getting more and more pissed, and also going rather mad. Wearing Shadow's form, over two centuries, also makes him evolve an obsession with the black hedgehog. Before, when being sealed in the scepter or sent to the future from Kingdom Valley, Mephs only seemed to want to torment and kill Shadow. But when the black hog finds him after Iblis Phase 2 in the future, he's suddenly all "ALLY WITH ME, PAL".

So yeah, my premise is that Mephiles went back in time with Silver and Blaze, but when he just left the work to the two of them (helping only by saying "Go to the trainyard"), the end result was Elise's death and a free Iblis that was useless to him. Mephiles then LIVES the subsequent 200 years, scheming and fuming and developing an obsession with Shadow. So he decides to recruit SHADOW instead, and take a more pro-active role in events by becoming Crystal Mephs, hoarding Chaos Emeralds, and maybe taking on Sonic personally. Which he does.

Dammit, every time someone posts in this topic I realise I have to add more detail in order to avoid questioning.

Mephiles, for the most part, stays in a constant timeline. He goes to the future when he is first "reborn", taking Shadow and Rouge with him, and he shortly afterwards comes back with Silver and Blaze. He doesn't do any time travelling at all after that.

    That's what I always thou-

.....but that makes sense as well. I never considered that scenario, but it certainly works.

Of course the whole game runs on a grandfather paradox so trying to make full sense of it is a lost cause to begin with, thus the retcon in the last cutscene. :specialed:

Nope. As I said before, the whole game, bar the Last Story, works perfectly without any paradoxes (ignoring the Chaos Emerald). This writeup is taking a surprisingly long time, though.

I actually liked Sonic '06. I just think that it's seems like a challenge with the glitches and bugs all over the place. And the weird part is, I even enjoyed the bugs that kills me during gameplay. It doesn't seem that weird if your in to technology. But the seriousness just makes me feel scared. Of course I'm only 12. I wonder if SEGA will re-release it without the early deadlines and with major bug fixes. Overall, I liked it. :)

What about when Shadow beats Crystalline-form Mephiles Phase 1 after Flame Core?
Mephs flees to the past to avoid getting a facefull of lead from Omega.

    ... Fuck.

You'd be surprised at just how much impact that one trip makes.
