Ya but every other Sonic game in existence, save for the Advance series where you can only get 9 lives I believe and those games that don't have lives, have life caps of 99. Especially seeing as how Sonic 4 is such a smaller game in comparison to say Sonic Unleashed, and much less difficult for that matter, it seems kinda strange that the life cap is 999. They definitely did that on purpose since the HUD is arranged that way to have 3 number locations for lives. It was definitely intended.

I did know those other things about Super Sonic. Funny, besides the color flashing and that flashing move that wiped everything off screen, Super Sonic in Sonic 4 is almost just as game breaking as Hyper Sonic in S3K. Then again I think that the whole breathing under water thing makes sense as Super Sonic anyway. He is supposed to be invincible after all.

Oh and another thing, in the updated version of Sonic 4 all invincibility monitors turn into 1up monitors when Super. This doesn't happen in the ipod version. I actually thought that was a good idea, although I think they should have made the shield monitors into 10 ring packs or something, because Super Sonic looks kinda strange with the shield surrounding him

Actually Sonic 1, 2, 3, & Knuckles, allow you to have up to 255 lives, temporarily. Not to mention that you can overflow/underflow the counter. The cap of 99 lives will be enforced only at the next zone transition.
Unrelated trivia: Sonic 1 doesn't have a ring cap at 999. Then again it doesn't have any chance where you can get more than 999 rings (but keep this in mind if you plan to edit the layouts and add more rings in your hacks). In Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles there are chances where you could collect more than 999 rings, and the ring cap is in place.

Well, in Sonic 3 / Sonic & Knuckles / Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Super Sonic (and Hyper Sonic) can collect shields after the transformation. While one of them (the Fire Shield) is always redundant, the Water Shield is useful when you play as Super Sonic as it allows you to breathe underwater, and the Lightning Shield is useful for both Super Sonic and Hyper Sonic since it attracts rings. We could discuss for hours if Super Sonic can breathe in space since he can't breathe underwater, but that's been done in the past and led to nowhere.

3. They did this to avoid a bug, which can still be exploited. This bug was in Sonic 2 as well.

Get Invincibility, THEN go Super. You will now have the Invincibility stars in Super form. The difference here is in Sonic 2 they stick around until you lose Super form, while in Sonic 4 they last their predetermined time limit, and then dissapear after that.

They should have found some way to simply disable shields while Super or something. There has to be some kind of check that they could have put in like seeing if Sonic was Super, and if he was, the shield or the invincibility stars would either go away or not show up.

And once again while it is used to cover up a bug, sort of anyway, you think the bigger offender would be the absolutely useless green bubble surrounding an already invincible character (Then again the bubble doesn't go away while normal with invincibility anyways)

I think I need to update my Sonic 4 somehow then, because I just played the 360 version and I still find invincibility monitors as Super Sonic. If you hit them you still get stars for a few seconds, but obviously there's no other differences. I wish the stars would stay, because they look awesome.

But why would you want to disable shields as Super Sonic? They look cool and provide extra protection if you run out of rings.

In Sonic 3K, if you press the B button while listening to the Competition theme in the Sound Test, PSG instruments 1 and 2 get "cut off".

It's probably due to the game checking to see if the B button has been pressed, because on the Competition Menu you can press the B button to get back to the SEGA screen.

The Advance games (that is, I know SAdv1 does this, but I'm assuming for the other two) actually count over 9 lives, but only show 9 if you have more. The counter won't go below 9 again until you lose as many lives as you gained to really get back to 8.

I don't know if they have a 99 life cap.

A little off-topic, I apologise, but if anyone knows where I can get those, I have been looking for a set for quite sometime. x:

Not sure if that's been pointed out before, but this is on the ground when you're fighting Chaos 2, I believe.

I can say with some confidence that it's not probably that. ;) For one thing, it affects other tracks too, albeit less noticably - if you hit it during the final note of the victory music it's also pretty clear.

So I went and had a look at the code - if you press B on the sound test, it plays sound $E3. If you go and play sound $E3 normally it'll have the same effect.

As to the intended purpose of that sound and rigging it up to the B button? I have no idea.

I figure this would be the best place to ask. What is the font used in "The Hedgehog" part of the older Sonic logos?

Sounds like they wanted the B button to stop the music playing, but they put the wrong value in. It's been a while so I don't remember which way round they are but I know one of those $E0 to $E5 values is "stop".

Just a quick chao question that doesn't deserve it's own thread.

Has anyone ever found the third chao container in Tails' Hidden Base stage? It's where abouts has pissed me off for years. :argh:

All other stages, bar Green Hill, have the three containers. Did the developers just forget to put one in or something?

Hmmm... I just played through and I couldn't find it either. So a quick google search revealed this in an FAQ I found Neoseeker:

Interesting.

There's only two Chao containers in Hidden Base.

There's a few containers that can't be accessed in Hard Mode as well (Egg Quarters for example), but they still exist. Since some were changed (City Escape comes to mind) this was just pure lazyness.

17. Not completely sure, but here is a ton of Sonic/Sega fonts.

here's one you'll all most likely know! It's one of those ones I didn't really take notice of until I paused once and saw it.
There's no stripe on the shoe in case you haven't seen yet.

...Well, I've never noticed THAT one in particular, but Sonic has a quite a few stripe-less shoe sprites in the game.

The stripeless shoes bothered me so much I had to fix them in my hack.

I've always wondered how they could have let slip such a big mistake. It's not like any of the other sprites have obvious colouring errors. Even things like the blue-arms/peach-legs mistakes that magazine art commonly made never happen in the sprites, to my knowledge.

So how did they miss that?
