It was mocking the odd nature of online translators. I've seen just as equally strange translations from Google Translate. Hell, one of the old Sonic Classic memes was a horrible translation of a Phantasy Star Online event in Japanese that said whatever it was talking about to, "Holding makes hand-woven fabrics chocolate." The line made me facepalm, which is what it's supposed to do when you see the reactions of the characters. Also, and most importantly, you're basing the whole game off one scene while comparing them to whole games, each with equally cheesy moments.
Martin Burke. And yes. I agree with what you said. Also, most people are claiming that Sonic's new voice is oh-so-wonderful, just because it's being voiced by Roger Graig Smith, you know, Chris Redfield from Resident Evil 5!...
It sits well with it's audiences, my 7 and 9-year old cousins both thought the cutscene was funny. I mean there were some parts I noticed were distinctively for older fans and other parts that were for younger fans. I chuckled at Sonic moon-walking, Sonic talking about shopping and them emphasizing he trashed a killer robot and Tails completing ignoring the killer robot part and instead of showing any worry or signs of being impressed he just goes, "Oh, there's shopping here?" and a few bits here and there. Those things go right over children's heads but the older fans get it, and the children I've showed it too enjoyed the more Saturday morning cartoon humor. Though the Mad World writer and Sonic Colors writer came onto the Sonic Stadium message boards and as he said that scene they played wasn't his favorite. As a general rule he made sure to stick in different humor for different audiences and that his favorite parts come from Eggman and his assistants, which he aimed to make more universally funny than aimed at a certain age group. EDIT: I'm biased as I like Roger Craig Smith, BUT I do really like Sonic's voice stand-alone also.
...How is this game like the storybook games? The gameplay and style of the game is for the most part different.
Here's the exact quote from the him on it, since quotes sometimes help more than talking about. <!--quoteo(post=218242:date=29 October 2010 - 10:05 PM:name=kpon)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (kpon @ 29 October 2010 - 10:05 PM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->This was not my favorite scene (although I still like it okay.) I think you guys will be really happy with the Eggman stuff Warren and I wrote.[/QUOTE]
I don't particularly care about anything that RCS has voiced before. I like the voice because I like the voice.
Sonic is ALWAYS going to be corny, it's just whether the execution makes it fun or just annoying. Usually when they try being serious it ends up pretentious with forced 'grimdark' and 'mature' aspects that don't fit the franchise at all. At least with a corny kiddy plot the Sonic universe seems in it's own 'comfort zone' where the characters seem themselves and far less forced. As for SA1 comparison, you seem to forget that SA1 had some of the most cheesy unbearable dialogue known to man (along with some terrible semi-animated cutscenes), it's just the depth in story seeped through it. The Japanese Sonic X adaption I admit was an improvement over this and almost shown the story if inserted in high quality (par the show exclusive content of course) but even then it was still a quirky cartoon. Sonic X as a whole bothered me as it had problems balancing light and serious aspects together, leading to kind of unsettling 'mood whiplash' (eg. quirky cartoon slapstick, to Tails having a disturbingly realistic nervous breakdown killing his lover). Unleashed did have depthful and serious moments albeit balanced in a whimsical and cartoony light, which is what I think suits the series. I admit I don't want things to be completely slapsticky and over the top, like say, how Crash Bandicoot evolved, but I think the series should always maintain this sense of whimsy, most attempts to forget it is a cute cartoon (eg. Next Gen, the Archie comics) usually end up an equally cliched pretentious load of crap.
It has decent controls, isn't on rails, and almost completely lacks waggle. How is this a storybook game again?
Well, regarding about the cutscene; I don't think is bad, you know... a bit of childish sense of humour is better than the melodrama scenes seen in the past games =P In fact, this game is aimed to all ages. (it's for children rather than for teens) I loved some bits of the cutscene like Tails' lack of interest about the giant robot and the moonwalk. Also, I love Tails' new voice and I think Sonic's voice is too deep, they should keep it that way though.
It's not. It's outrageous hyperbole. Because if I'd said what I meant to say - "It's a nice kid-friendly game in the style of whimsical kid-friendly games before it, like Sonic Unleashed and Secret Rings, so of course the game's going to have cartoony cutscenes that little kids will laugh at and teenagers/older players will facepalm at, this should be obvious, even SEGA admitted it and also said they're disavowing the previous pompous 'mature cheese' disasters like Shadow the Hedgehog etc, the Sonic series will hit that universal bracket again eventually, in the meantime get over yourself" - then that post would be happily ignored by idiots. Idiots who don't read other posts with common sense in the thread, so they keep posting "CARTOONY CUTSCENES? IN MY CARTOON MASCOT GAME WITH A PRETEEN DEMOGRAPHIC? I FAIL TO UNDERSTAND THE RELEVANCE OF THIS".
It plays nothing at all like any of the storybook games and doesn't have the atmosphere or storyline of them. The only similarity is that it's on the Wii.
If you mean it's like the Storybook games in the sense that it's silly and lighthearted, then, yes. It's like the storybook games. Othewise, no. That's basically the only similarity other than the Nintendo-exclusivity.
Thanks to Cinossu ripping the file I needed from his nand I was able to get the demo rom. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=TGPLMIPG I haven't tried it in any Emu yet, but it works on my Acekard2i perfectly.
Fuck yes, I was waiting for this. Thanks Polygon Jim, you are my WAIFU ATM. :P Will report back with stuff. EDIT: wtf they keep all the data in the arm9.bin executable - even the SDAT. Makes sense since it's temporarily holding the game in the DS' memory. EDIT2: Works in Desmume EDIT3: Here are the SDATs. Looks like arm9_00000001.sdat has the Menu/Title music, the level music, the red wisp thingy music, 1UP, and the drowning (??) music - which is missing and crashes VGMTrans. Not sure what arm9_00000000.sdat is.
