I prefer to just avoid the confusion by telling myself that Mobius doesn't exist.

After all, South Island is supposed to be in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

considering Christmas Island, South Island and Westside Island are real world locations, I think its a stretch to assume that they didn't intend it to be on good ol fashion LSD trip-induced present day Earth. The existence of characters like Madonna, the US Sonic bible, etc seem to enforce that a tad too. Its kindof hard to pinpoint overall given that in the early days everything got extremely inconsistent due to poor license control on SEGA's part, but if you ignore everything DiC did there's nothing really flat out saying there isn't humans in the game's universe.

I view the approach more like cartoons like Peanuts or Ed, Edd, 'n Eddy. You know other people are around but the show is designed so you only ever see the main cast.

  3. Oooh, so this is what kind of chat that goes on at Sonic Retro, eh? How... retro!

Anywho, although it was never explicitly stated that humans populated Earth back in any the classic Sonic Team games (all four of them), I would have to say that it is now heavily implied that Sonic the Hedgehog's South Island had to have some form of human populace, especially once you take the more recent outings into account. It's quite evident that the Small Animals are not at all capable of constructing all of the marble temples and industrious urban landscapes littered across the island - the Flicky that Amy encountered in Sonic Adventure wasn't capable of doing anything beyond what a normal bird could do, either mentally or physically. The ancient ruins could be chalked up to past anthropomorphic animal civilizations akin to the Knuckles Tribe, sure, but the cities of Spring Yard and Scrap Brain were most definitely of human creation. The same could be said for the excavated caverns of Mystic Cave and hustling and bustling Casino Night of Sonic the Hedgehog 2's West Side Island.

It certainly is interesting that there's hieroglyphics depicting humans in Sandopolis though - I certainly wouldn't have seen Angel Island as being the kind of place that they'd inhabit! Gaians, perhaps?

  4. I feel that Sonic's early adventures take place outside the limits of the Human developments

Kinda like, Eggman is responsible for construction in areas not previously controlled by humans.

So who is living in those buildings in the background?

I always considered the buildings to be derelict, or ay least built by Dr. Robotnik as part of the scenery. 'd go with the first one though.

I've always gone on the assumption that Sonic takes place in future earth, where anthropomorphic animals evolved where humans didn't live. I always assumed the OVA followed a similar idea, too. (Having only watched the English dub) There's a president, and "planet freedom" sounds like a name for a planet where all the nations had united into one super nation. Or where the USA took over all the other ones. :v:

Sonic set in the future is a good one, but I like to see it as sonic living on a remote island no one has discovered or it's just not found.

Mobius can just be a related planet to earth in another galaxy, or dimension, there are humans and animals are slightly more evolved, it's a hard one.

On my butt in front of the computer. Where else?
I'm working on working up the willpower to work on learning how to make my own Sonic fangames. Not quite there yet.
Personally, I'm all for humans in the Sonic universe if they keep doing them like Unleashed did. As for whether or not they exist, Eggman exists, therefore either so do other humans, or the egg came before the chicken. Which would be stupid.

Also, I don't like the Sonic X idea of there being two worlds. It reeks of a bad excuse to say "No, there aren't any humans in Sonic's world!" while attempting to explain away the fat elephant in the living room by giving Eggman a contrived origin story in the process.

All of this said, I feel that if future Sonic games attempt to portray the society of Sonic's world, there should be some helping of animal society to balance out the human ones. It's starting to be more of a question of whether or not there are anthromorphic animal things other than the ragtag bunch of misfits that routinely saves a dominantly human world.

I'm not sure what X implies.

At episode 33 Eggman finds about Gerald on the GUN's computer database. He recognises him as his grandfather, not just someone with the same surname he has, so Eggman had to have known Gerald previously, or at least heard of him, and to know tht the man was his grandfather.

Next Eggman says Chris' Earth is from where he came from. It implies he switched from Chris' Earth to Sonic's planet at one point but it's never shown how or why, nor does Eggman ever reflect on this (which is something that anyone would think). Anyway, it's logic to think it was from some nasty Chaos Control fumble. However, there are no Chaos Emeralds on Chris' Earth. The ones the cast deals with are the set that he brought from Sonic's planet. Eggman is so surprised about finding Gerald on Chris' Earth and knowing he was supposedly from that Earth as well, that the dimension switch couldn't be a product of something he planned, like constructing a portal like Chris did later or some sort of experimentation accident. And Eggman can't remember about it either, because he's so surprised in finding his grandfather in Chris' Earth.

Further along, he explains that Chris' Earth and Sonic's planet are in the same location in space, but are different worlds, part of an echo universe. That is classic science fiction. Sonic's planet is Earth but just in another dimension and this fits the games to a T. Eggman was born on both places, because in settings such as these, some elements happening on dimension A also happen in dimension B. If Eggman we see in X was born on Sonic's planet and considering that he recognised Gerald as his grandfather and was surprised to find information about him in Chris' Earth, then it means Gerald was also part of Sonic's planet.

I mostly believe on the third point. The echo universe is classic science fiction and fits the game universe, which was something X was concerned about. It's also the one that doesn't have any complicated holes and strings attached to it. The only problem of the third point is the lack of humans in Sonic's planet. However, they might not have been featured. Some would've said that Sonic is confused at the beginning of the other episode, but really, he was in Eggman's base with him when Chaos Control happened and then suddenly he's in the middle of a bustling city and Eggman is nowhere to be found. It's natural he'd be confused. The cast adapts well to Chris' world, as if they're already used to humans to begin with.

This ambiguity might be deliberate as a means to appeal to both the Earth and Mobius crowd. Or maybe fan translation issues. I'm not sure what the dub says about it either.

I remember there being a short, old, black guy in the Sonic Comics. He did something important, I just can't remember because it's been so long.

    MIDI-to-SMPS-conversions, mostly. Takin' requests, too.
You mean Nate Morgan, in all likelyhood.

Anyhow... my stance on this was always a simple one, even before I was introduced to Gerald and Maria:

Eggman musta come from SOMEWHERE, right? There must be at least some other humans.

Also, didn't Sonic Jam feature a short taking place in a city full of humans?

    EDIT: NINJA'D.

Sure did, animated by none other than the studio who animated the Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, etc.

Incidentally, the designs didn't look as out of place there as later humans in the actual games did, and they had story-relevance. 'course Yakko Wakko and Dot share similar design cues with Classic Sonic and regularly dealt with human antagonists.

^ This is the primary reason Unleashed's humans are okay in my book.

Mind you Sonic Adventure's humans were merely block and boring—it wasn't so much that they didn't fit as it was that they just didn't merit thinking about.

I still don't get this argument. Why couldn't present anthropomorphic animal civilizations build those cities? There's bound to be a bunch of them, Sonic and friends have to had come from somewhere. Why couldn't Spring Yard City and the like be inhabited by a bunch of fancharacters or something?

I'll give you Scrap Brain, Wing Fortress, etc. though. Eggbotnikman definitely built those.

  18. Towns being created by creatures that could actually run up the loops and through corkscrews would make sense.

Yes, but the recent games have proven that for some reason humans build highways and stuff like that as well.

Also, I don't think EVERY creature can run around loops and corkscrews. Silver for example, or possibly Sally (I don't read the comics much so I don't know what she does).
