Pretty much what Dalek said, except for that last part about Sonic's 06 model. I kind of like it, but I prefer his Unleashed/Colors model.
I can't help but wonder why you bothered posting in this topic if you have no interest in it, Dalek. It's the Unleashed model for me. That one is definitely my favorite by far. His spikes are a little long (as is the norm for modern Sonic) but I can deal with it.
I posted here because I noticed people bickering about spilt milk - I'm one to prefer Sonic's newer design, but christ, when I see the hypocrissy from this thread I sigh. Sonic's design has been redesigned - so what? As noted, a lot of other characters have had changes and they're for the better. Why can't Retro accept that Sonic's newer design is the future? Sure, it'd add a little charm to see Classic Sonic around again as a cameo, but bloody hell.
Whatever, guys. I love the old design, but I sorta like the newer Unleashed design as well. The latter seems to be approaching the more light-hearted expressions of the former in lieu of a permanent snarky ass smirk.
I've never really had a problem with any of Sonic's models [aside from Sonic 06], but I cannot stand the modern artwork. It just looks stupid to me, and I don't see anything visually appealing about it.
Yeah, pretty much what CP said. Sonic's face in the newer artwork I find more obnoxious, especially in association to their respective games. The other characters I don't mind as much though. The older artwork's got a more pleasant Sonic. Slightly more marketable.
Agreed - even though, personally, I wouldn't say that every modern Sonic design is ugly, I kinda like some of them (Unleashed, for example). Some are fucking horrible though (06 and the original Sonic Adventure artwork immediately come to mind...). Classic Sonic definitely has a timeless charm about him; I can't really explain why, there's just something about that design; it's such an amazing mix of cute and badass at the same time. As for why they changed the design... As much as I sometimes wish it hadn't happened, I always though it was an attempt to keep Sonic looking "cool" and up-to-date. When Sonic was first created, I believe it was with classic characters such as Mickey Mouse in mind; timeless characters who were (and still are) massively popular at the time. The new Sonic, on the other hand, kinda reminds me of Crash Bandicoot in some ways, as silly as that sounds... It's probably just the green eyes and toothy grin, to be honest :v: I'm not saying Sonic was redesigned to look like Crash per se, but I have to wonder if some (even if only a tiny little bit) of the inspiration for modern Sonic came from this kind of character - which was very popular and considered "cool" at the time. I'm not entirely sure about the idea of Sonic's design changing so it became universal across all countries as well as the cartoons. He looks somewhat different in Sonic X than in the games; and in the games themselves, his appearance keeps changing dramatically.
Totally agree with you. Classic Sonic has some sort of charm that Modern Sonic just doesn't capture for me... and I really hope Crash wasn't a factor behind such a change. Some models do look fine, Unleashed on X360/PS3 and Colours seem to look the best.
I never considered Crash to be cool, nor did I know anyone that did. I would hope nobody thought he was cool...silly yes. But cool? Not so much. Also, replying to a topic to tell everyone else that they are bickering over something stupid is a stupid reason to reply to a topic, in my opinion. Edit: On topic though, I'm pretty sure it was an anime influenced change. Anime character's eyes usually compliment their overall color theme. Anime characters are considered cool, so why not give Sonic anime proportions? Then the wave of realistic games came and they tried to turn their anime Sonic into realistic Sonic. That...didn't really work out though.
Personally, I am one person who actually prefers modern design for Sonic. Unleashed did it perfectly for me, and the Classic Sonic is jsut way too short and chubby for a teenager who runs all the goddamn time. You wouldn't be chubby at all running that much and that fast. Besides, Classic Sonic just screams Mickey Mouse ripoff to me. Especially on the westernized boxart of some of the classic games. But that's just me and I'm not saying its fact or anyone has to agree with me. However, OVA Sonic is the best Classic Sonic ever looked to me. If he looked like that now, in 3D, I would not mind it at all. But it's hard to capture a 2D design perfectly when converting to 3D.
So Archie Comics busted out this slightly updated look for Mighty I gotta say, I really like it. It's simple, yet hella effective. Only thing I'd change is the all white wrist and ankle gear. A little more color wouldn't hurt.
Mighty looks like Shadow. He would've looked heaps better if the poor guy changed colour slightly, either tone down to brown (like the Sega Sonic sprites) or up it to medium orange (he was a dark orange at some point, so he wouldn't be so close to Knuckles' colours). I agree that the attire should be different. The red and white blends with his colour shceme a bit too much.
It's actually all white. I added the extra red bits, though they could be black as well. Remember, palette limitations and all that.
His forehead looks a bit small, don't know whether or not that gives him a more unique appeal though. His death glare does indeed make him look a bit too Shadow-y though.
NO, SHADOW LOOKS LIKE MIGHTY Although to be honest, Mighty's design is kind of...boring. He could use some sprucing up to be less derivative of Sonic, although I couldn't for the life of me think up a way to do that without changing him too drastically.
I like Mighty's design, personally. It's pretty nice as is. If there were any Sonic characters I want to redesign I'd probably go with Amy. I hate her design to no end. I liked how she looked in Sonic Riders - Bellbottom/Capri pants looked really nice on her.

Why do you people care. It's a fucking blue hedgehog. Running around. You never see his face up close minus the cutscenes. Who gives a shit what colour his eyes are. I do agree that they made his limbs too long in 06, but that aside, who gives a fuck. This fanbase nitpicks about everything and whine about everything, and frankly it's pissing me off. Classic Sonic is never coming back. Deal with it.
Not a bad Mighty design. I like it a lot. It's what I'd like to see in the games (YOU HEAR ME SEGA? GIVE ME MY FAVORITE CHARACTER BACK! ).
