Sega doesn't even hold the rights to recent Sonic's music?

Hello, Sonic Retro! Yesterday, on IRC, I shared some information with some of the people in charge of the Wiki here (specifically Andlabs, who recommended that I bring this to Retro's attention) concerning the actual rights to the music of some of the Sonic games. There's so much I want to go over I don't know where to start, so I apologize if the paragraph is a little sloppy.

First off, there is a Japanese copyright collection society called the "Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers" (JASRAC, for short), that documents and protects copyright work for Japanese music artists. They have a huge database of Japanese music copyrights which span to music CDs, records, movie soundtracks, Anime soundtracks, and even game music.

Out of curiosity, using a Japanese search engine they have here, I entered "Sonic Adventure" in the Title (作品タイトル) category, and it brought up dozens of results. As you can see, in the Author (著作者) and Artist (アーティスト) categories, Sega is not shown in any of them. Also out of curiosity, I clicked a few records on the database (specifically under "JUN SENOUE" and "FUMIE KUMATANI" as artists, for example).

Under the column, "Right Holder (or 権利者)" of each record online, lists the right-holder(s) to the work. In most records listed for each individual work, Sega Enterprises (or what would be in its official Japanese Katakana: セガ or セガ・エンタープライゼス) is not among the right-holders to the songs.

Allow me to make a few examples here (Please note that I am NOT going to list every single one of each individual's works, I have time for other stuff).

EDITED: 8/30/2010 11:26PM PST

Under Fumie Kamatani's name:
Now here's a list of some of Jun Senoue's works:
Even more noticeable are the records of songs under Kenichi Tokoi's name.
And from Naofumi Hataya, we have here:

Upon closer examination, I have discovered that, so far, according to the song records in the database, Sega does not actually hold the rights to most of the game music for post-Sonic Adventure games, including Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, and perhaps beyond. The people who actually made the music work, however, do. At least, under the Wave Master label.

Before you ask, you're probably wondering "Isn't Wave Master part of Sega or something?" Well... yes and no. From what I've researched, Sega doesn't actually own Wave Master. WM serves as a music publisher and producer for Sega's music. They are pretty independent of them.

One more note here: I am still investigating the JASRAC search engine, so I will be updating this list periodically for any new information about the Japanese copyrights to Sonic music. Please stay tune!

Now I have a couple questions to ask of Sonic Retro.
• Does the phrase "AFTER THE ADVENTURE" mean anything at all? It also references a "SONIC ADVENTURE &NIGHTSよりAFTER" in that same record. I definitely know what Sonic Adventure and NiGHTS are, but the exact meaning of "SONIC ADVENTURE &NIGHTSよりAFTER" is unknown to me. A search on Google, YouTube, and Sonic Retro Wiki does not bring up any results. Could this actually be a track name to some unknown track produced for Sonic Adventure?
What I researched about this record, is that the names associated to "AFTER THE ADVENTURE" are Tomoko Sasaki (佐々木 朋子), Jun Senoue (瀬上 純), Can't translate (瀬津丸 勝), Sega Enterprises, and Wave Master. I, for one, did not know that Tomoko did any music for Sonic Adventure. She is listed as Special Thanks in the games credits.
• This doesn't concern JASRAC, but speaking of Tomoko Sasaki, she is known to have been voiced the Chao characters in Sonic Adventure 2, and presumably Sonic Adventure. Giving her track record of recording speech in some of the games she has worked on, could she have actually recorded the PCM speech samples for Sonic The Hedgehog CD? In that game's credits, she is credited as Special Thanks, which is also the first game she's been credited on. I ask this because I notice some of the PCM voice samples from SCD sound vaguely similar to the Chao in SA1 & SA2, at least to my ears.

This topic will be updated as you read this so please look forward to any new findings here, thanks.

I've heard that Sega no longer owns the rights to the Japanese Sonic CD soundtrack as well. It would explain why it was exclusive to Japan and why Europe got the American soundtrack, at least.

Considering All-Stars Racing, I think that was a just an "mistake" (or they simply use the usa version of Sonic Gems and didn't care, suprise suprise). than really not owning the rights.

"AFTER THE ADVENTURE" was a song track on Jun Senoue's CD The Works.

It was a remix of "Welcome To Station Square" and "It Doesn't Matter" from Sonic Adventure.

Huh? I'm pretty sure Europe got the JP soundtrack.

The Japanese version of Palmtree Panic is in All-Stars Racing, at least in the PAL Wii version.

Europe did get the Japanese soundtrack, but it got the USA version in Sonic Gems Collection.

All I can find on "After the Adventure" is this video from Summer of Sonic. If anyone has a link to the full track, that'd be badass; I've definitely never heard this arrangement before and I'm pretty intrigued by how it mixes together Station Square, Dreams Dreams and It Doesn't Matter into one track.

9. I have always been under the impression that this is a surprisingly common occurrence, and not only in games. For example, Warner Bros. had to license the John Williams Superman Theme for use in Superman Returns.

Oh, my apologies. I was referring to the European version of Sonic Gems Collection. Now that I've read that the original Palmtree Panic was in All-Stars, I guess that's wrong.

It's still odd that Europe got the American soundtrack for Gems, though.

EDIT: Maybe they don't own the rights to a specific song like Toot Toot Sonic Warrior anymore. So, instead of changing a song around, they just gave Europe the American soundtrack because they couldn't be arsed to pay some sort of licensing fee.

Was that really from the Works, or the obscure Radio DC album?
(The latter has some French vocals while the former hasn't.)

BTW can we expect a delicious FLAC rip from you?

Yes, I would like a rip as aswell.

Anyway, I thought the music was for rights of the artists who composed them.

I had Sonic CD for the PC way back in '95, and it used the 'American' soundtrack. I've always assumed we were meant to have that soundtrack, and not the Japanese version. Considering all the fuss that was made when we did get the revised soundtrack in the first place. I actually prefer the Nilsen version anyway, it sounds less like a cringey party. The Japanese rap- or 'Rapanese' as I like to call it - doesn't really feel Sonic-y.

It's on The Works as number 12 on the track list. Details from the album state that it was previously unreleased on CD and it has no dialogue.

All right.

Anyone who wants the original file for AFTER THE ADVENTURE from The Works can shoot me a message. Include your email so I can send it to you.

19. I think even some songs from the original are like that. It explains why they didn't use the original Nakamura theme in Sonic 3.

I completely understand why Sega doesn't own the rights to the music, just like the composers don't own the rights to Sonic. An early example is Sonic Spinball. Remember there is a early release of the game that has the title music that is similar to the one used in Sonic 1 and 2? They had to change it because Dreams Come True owns the rights to the music, and not Sega.
