    Completely wrong, as said above.

Also, some Mario fans may prefer Sonic 2 to Sonic 3. They can't both be right.

OK, the insult was out of line. EVERYONE cool down a bit, please.

  3. Whatever, we still shouldn't be arguing about Subjectivism and objectivism. Most of this thread is opinion, with some facts thrown in here and there.
We should just all move on.

This is all news to me... I never for a second considered these areas really that bad... like Jan said, you don't have to play through these areas... I always likened them to flashy displays if you managed to find the routes instead of trudging through the underwater areas... and it's not like the entire game was comprised of these sections either.

...Eh? Really? Because I got the sense that it was a homage, myself. Given how the whole game is about deliberately revisiting nostalgic concepts... and how the original Metropolis Zone *cough* + - never had steam vents, walls that chase you you, gears you had to run on to move either vertically or horizontally, doors that you opened by running on gears and the like, or those stupid little see-saw things that look motion-controlled, not to mention Mad Gear Zone actually does attempt a somewhat different, darker-looking look whereas Metropolis itself was just kind of putrid, bright green   *cough* but take that as you will. Also, + - THE NINJUTSU MANTIS COUNT IS OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND!!!!!!!

If I were to put a finger on exactly why they never seemed that bad, it would be because the larger size of the zones and the game as a whole allowed them to include a healthy helping of "auto-boost" segments without drowning out actual gameplay. Not exactly the most effective use of all that extra space, but, you're right, you can certainly take different routes than the boost-driven ones. (In fact, some of those different routes involve deliberately stopping yourself or breaking away from a boost-route in the middle of an "exciting" autopilot section to access an alternative path or secret passage... exhibit A, Carnival Night Zone Act 2, hugely massive shortcut if you jump off that first stupid barber-pole looking thing at the very start of the level, plus a Special Stage if you jump a but further down.

I've never really had a problem with them either. I was a little surprised when they were brought up. It's okay to have a little variety; a change of pace like this can be a breath of fresh air if used in moderation. It's keeping a balance that is the important part. They'd get a little tiring if overused, but here they just break up the monotony (perhaps not a good choice of words).

They could have made a game with the classic character designs in brand new levels, instead of new-Sonic in rehashed levels. That's what the ideal Sonic 4 would have been for me, along with the old physics making a comeback.

I think that would have made much more sense as a true sequel.

    EDIT: Hi, RubyEclipse.

There is nothing to argue about. Subjective and objective are both defined clearly in the OED, so are objective. I am not trying to be hostile but what you are attempting to say is bollocks. I studied the English language at university level, so I can grasp dictionary definitions. However I am not going to shit up this thread any more.

    On topic.
I remember playing Advance 1 for the first time and being so bothered by the diffence in physics, I thought the game was nearly unplayable. Now after years have past, I don't notice it at all. This could be the same.

Strange. It took me several zones to even notice the difference in physics, although that could be because I always feel awkward when playing handhelds. (Thank God for my shiny, not-quite-new-anymore GameBoy Player...)

By no means am I insulting your intelligence, but this is the dumbest thing I have ever read. That's the whole point of making a continuation of the original series, the only thing each game shared was the basic premise of platforming and using your momentum as an advantage, which has long been gone in Sonic games for YEARS. They easily could have created fresh new content using the classic art style, they just didn't want to. Even Iizuka had to bullshit his way out of the argument of using Classic Sonic in this game, they honestly do not give a shit. They just put together what they knew would sell and what they were comfortable with.

You're kind of missing the point of that bit you quoted there. The point is that the remixed *ahem* content exists to balance out the other things that aren't as they should be. And the "classic art style" wasn't the point of that post, either.

The Classic art style is part of it though. I said they could have made new content reminiscent of the classics, but they chose to rehash almost everything and add in their own modifications to their initial designs.

fuck it I don't give a shit sdkjfsdf I'm just mad and SEGA/Gimps should die :[

It's a very, very insignificant part of it, and frankly, I doubt anyone would waste any time on that part if every other aspect of the game were in line with what we want.

    But that's beside the point...

I started with Sonic 1 when I was three and grew up playing the classics, I didn't like the physics in Chaos and triple trouble either, although I did become acustomed to it and eventually enjoyed the games. I first played Advance in an emulator with a control pad, then on a GBA. I actually found playing on a GBA a lot easier, so I'm the opposite of you. As long as the controls are tight and responsive, I expect I'll
get some fun out of S4, Rush engine or not.

    Hi!

It's no surprise that I read threads like this, is it? ;)

I detest handhelds. The only reason I own them is for the occasional awesome games that I can't play anywhere else. But one of the reasons I hate them is the tiny screens, and one of the reasons I hate the DS is that it decided "two tiny screens, only one of which the player can focus on at a time" was somehow better than "one screen that's as big as two and a half screens."

And the number one reason I love the PSP-2000/3000 is its ability to connect and output video directly to a television via Component (and A/V or S-Video if you have a 3000 model).

GameBoy Advance games I can tolerate because I have the GameBoy Player now, and even if I didn't, I have no qualms using emulators to play on larger screens when I own the actual official cartridge and hardware anyway. But... this is all very beside the point.

It took me a while to even notice the difference in physics because although things play a little less smoothly overall, the effect of the physics was mostly the same. The only glaring issue is the way you slow down in the air too quickly when you're not holding right or left, which is most glaring after a roll or Spin Dash (where even holding the D-pad forward has no effect due to rolling's more limited control). Other than that, I found no significant problems.

    It's 8 games in one!

For me, this game could keep its green eyes and useless goggles as long as the game physics were of a quality comparable to the classics, if not superior. But that doesn't appear to be the case. Without a competent physics engine, this game can only be inferior. Add in the rehashes and this game is one big downloadable step back.

Speaking of, isn't there a part of the leaked videos that shows how Sonic can change directions completely while in the same jump?

I didn't notice anything like that when it didn't involve a spring...

I wish people would stop treating this as if it were being release directly after Sonic 3 & Knuckles, because it's not. It takes place after those games in the timeline, but it's being released after a whole line of other games that came between, with the entire theme being a return to classic form—and having been described as a "first step" to that by an official source (was that RubyEclipse, or was it someone else? Bah, it all bleeds together in a blue-tinted haze at this point...). It may be a step back compared to the classics, but if you compare it to the majority of the games that more directly precede it, isn't it more of a step forward after, oh, I dunno, two steps back, one inch forward, five great tumbling somersaults the other way, and then one fall down a trap door into a bottomless pit of spikes from which the series only barely recovered, and then a few measly tip-toes back in the right direction again?

That's what it looks like to me, anyway.

It's a collection of Kirby games. Springbreeze is a tribute to the game that started the whole deal. It is in no way a rehash.

And yet they could have made a new zone with all that material with new enemies and a much different look but they didn't did they? You're forgetting the fact that the previous 3 other zones and the special stage were all copies of previous levels in the series. We're far past the point of "homage" by Mad Gear, especially when they recycle the exact same boss.

Bull. They mentioned that this game is a direct sequel to the games. This is also hardly a step forward from Sonic Unleashed. It's a step back in every sense of the word.
