Basically, we all know the special zones, right? You went in there, got the chaos emerald and then left. But every game had its own version of the special zones. Now then, why does the special zone change every game to be different from the last?

Here's what I think is why:

Basically, let's say the special zone is a alternate dimension, where things are different than they normally are and it's completely chaotic. Each area of this dimension is different to the last, and has its own rules applying to itself only(which is why each game's special zone plays different to the previous one).

What about the chaos emeralds? Let's say the special zone is their real home, where they truly originated from. They came from chaos itself(which in this theory is the special zone) and materialized in a location in Earth/Mobius/whatever it's called now-a-days where the Echidna tribe found it and found it had tremendous power, thusly deciding to make a shrine for them. Eventually they decided to use them for war, and the rest you probably already know about from Sonic Adventure's plot.

What about Chaos, the creature that was there with the chaos emeralds and our eventual final boss for Sonic Adventure? For our theory, let's say the special zone has all manner of weird things and creatures in it that make no sense or look weird. Our boy Chaos could just be a creature that feeds off the chaotic energy of the emeralds for nourishment and power(thus why it got a LOT more powerful when it consumed the emeralds Robotnik gave it). When the Echidna tribe went to the shrine to get those emeralds, Chaos attacked them because they were stealing its sole source of food, not because of being dicks to the chao. Hey, if a group of jerks tried to steal a taco you were eating and you hadn't eaten in days, wouldn't you be pissed?

As for the different ways the special zone looks like for each time Sonic enters them for each game, the Special zone and the rest of our normal dimension could exist side-by-side, and certain rips or tears in the fabric of our normal reality could be broken to enter the special zone if one could say....run fast enough to actually rip that thing a new one, like Sonic did. To put it simply, each "hole"(as we'll call it) that Sonic enters leads to a different part of an area in the special zone. Each game's general area could lead to an area of the special zone, depending on where he entered at. Sonic 1 had a ecstasy-laced area of creatures changing constantly into various recognizable animals, a constantly turning world, and red bar-like things that sent Sonic back to his original dimension if he touched them(either by accident or on purpose). As for the majority of his other games, the ones using the half-pipe set-up, this could be simply a rally large area of the special zone where the whole thing is nothing but pipes leading nowhere and bombs that explode when touched. Sonic 3&Knuckles ended up with Sonic in an area of the special zone filled with checkered planets covered in red, blue and yellow spheres that had their own rules applies to them. The rest of them could be simply other areas possibly in the special zone.

But how did the chaos emeralds get back into the special zone after Sonic(or Robotnik, if you got the normal ending) collected them all? Well, they could work like the dragon balls, shooting away like a bullet after their use is completed, only they shoot back into the special zone into a different area(explaining why they're never in the saem place exactly as they were in the last game).

So, if they do that every time after being used, how did they keep them from going back into the special zone after being used in games after Sonic Adventure(besides Sonic Heroes, but that's a given)? Most likely Tails invented something to keep them from splitting after being used, so they could conveniently be used again if need-be, or in worst-case scenarios just scatter across the planet. This would explain why after that one point they always appear around the planet instead of the special zone as they normally would be at by now.

Finally, the master emerald, the big daddy of them all. Basically, this one likely came first(being the one emerald to rule them all*shot*), and the others came into existance some time eventually after it. It has the ability to drain the power of the other emeralds, probably to keep them from overloading and doing lord-knows-what if they did. Well, we did find out what that "what" was in S3&K: the super emeralds. Loaded with all that awesome extra power, they grew in size and gave our blue hero extreme power(hyper sonic).

I could go on and on about this, but I'm gonna stop here because both a.) it should hopefully get the basic idea across, and b.) it's 1:30 AM over here, so I'm going to bed now. Can't wait to see where this goes when I wake up. Until then, smell ya later. :P

Because, ever since Sonic 2, that's just been a defining factor of special stages. They change every game, likely to prevent the same gimmick from getting stale.

All this fanon "theory" is pretentious and completely useless for something so simple.

Actually, Chaos was officially stated (iirc) to be a Chao that had been mutated when it touched the Master Emerald, hence it's adaption into my past theory.

I don't get what's with all the hate of imagination where Sonic phenomena are concerned. Everyone knows that the real answer is "It happens because Sonic Team doesn't care about consistency", but, y'know, some of us still like thinking up in-universe rationalisations. Just because 1) the designers and 2) you aren't bothered doesn't mean everyone isn't.

    ANYWHAY:

This is pretty much where my theory goes too. Hell, I think there are only two major schools of thought on the subject; the first being that the Special Zones are actually designed and built by Robotnik as a holding pen for the Emeralds, and the second being this. "Chaotic dimension" always seemed more sensible to me, although I'm unconvinced that all Special Zones are the same chaotic dimension. The Emeralds, being the chaotic things they are, just arbitrarily drop into random pocket dimensions at random times. This randomness contributes to the changing character of the Special Zones, but also to the fact that sometimes you don't find them in Special Zones. What drops randomly into a pocket dimension can also drop randomly out of it; which is why you sometimes (like the Game Gear Sonic 1 & 2, and then every other 3D game bar Heroes) just find them lying around in the real world.

...which makes this explanation superfluous under my pseudo-physical model. You don't ever need to explain why or how the Emeralds do what they do or are found where they're found; the Emeralds are CHAOTIC, and you should expect neither reliability nor rationality from their behaviour.

But the Super Emeralds appear when the Chaos Emeralds are brought to the Master Emerald, not when they're taken away from it, so your logic there seems backwards. Again, with my above logic emphasising the essential chaos of the Emeralds, the Super Emeralds don't really require an explanation; it's just more insane, bizarre junk that those craaaaazy gems do. All I get from the Super Emeralds is that the Chaos Emeralds sometimes transform into them when they're in the presence of the Master, but as for the why: again, it's just random, chaotic behaviour.

Oh, yeah, and as BlackHole says, Chaos is canonically stated as a normal chao that just got mutated by many, many years soaking up chaos radiation at the Emerald Shrine. Check out the wiki entry for knowledge!

    [/theory] :D

We could also look into the case of the Sonic the Hedgehog comic's dealing with the special zones. Initially, they were treated just like the game (50 rings, hit a starpost, welcome to the twilight zone), but as the comic progressed, they were shown as something totally different. Most game zones became an alternate dimension in Mobius, which could royally mess up the normal dimension if toyed around with (such as the battle between Super Sonic and Hyper Knuckles).

So far this theory only explains why Chaos Emeralds are called "Chaos" Emeralds. But it pretty much matches my theory as well, along with giving me another reason to call the Special Stage the "Chaos Zone".

The fact that the Special Zones are different every time supports my "every game takes place in a different dimension" broken canon theory.

Assume that entering a special zone involves zipping to the end of a given vector in space/time with constant magnitude and direction. It would make sense that within any one game (dimension), all teleports to a Special Zone land you in the same type of Special Zone, because the vector remains the same and at least one coordinate (Sonic's home dimension) remains fixed. When you change the starting dimension (different game), you change the destination of the vector, and thus you get a different form of Special Stage.

    It's simple quantum mechanics. :specialed:

The gold rings that Sonic collects are actually small holes in the space-time continium, rips in the fabric of reality (why else do they disappear without him being weighed down?), once he has ran through enough of these holes he can find a giant hole to step through into an alternate universe in which he must find the root of these temporal disturbances - The Chaos Emeralds!

The Chaotic nature of these emeralds are brought into control only when all of them are found and brought together, only then the power is stable enough to use safely. Robotnik intends to use this power to destroy the world, whereas Sonic only uses it for good.

    So there you go.

Except the Chaos Emeralds actually have a canonical reason for their name (the chaos they caused at the altar) :eng101:

Also, I'm gonna second Frozen Nitrogen's post. Nothing wrong with imagination.

That's after Sonic Adventure. Before then, it just refers to the dimensions they originated from.

That's explain why the Light Chao looks alot like Chaos.
