Yeah, Katzu Niku linked this to me earlier and I posted it on #protos, too bad drx isn't here. And I don't have $99. The screenshot, even at full resolution, is too blurry to indicate whether or not it is indeed 1ST ROM, so I'm a bit more concerned with how close to completion the Pengo cart is until we get a confirmation on it. I'll ask what build this Crackers is.

  3. I'd love to get into prototype collecting. Sigh, to be rich.

To spend $100+ on something that is basically worthless, yes. Price is likely to double too, I usually see Crackers carts go for around $300.

$100, maybe not. But if I have €100 in my pocket, then yes, I feel rich.

Short of keeping the board around, I doubt this is anything we haven't seen.

So you think owning one proto cart makes you a very, very great prototype collector?

What if this proto doesn't contain any of the TMNT overdump data, if that is likely?

  11. Thank you, I was about to say that. One prototype can be affordable, but is not considered a collection. In fact, even a small collection of 5-10 protos could be costly.

I like how he links to Retro in the eBay article as a source of information on Crackers =P

Is this thing a genuine one? Or like a home-made copy one?

He's not saying one would be, he's saying that it'd be nice to have the money to have more than one.

I thought the "Pengo" being referred to was an old Hungarian pengo bill of some sort, that country's former currency.

Um I thought its considered that Crackers was likely dumped from a cart that was likely being reused, so finding an original would be unlikely.

I won this, and it arrived today :v:

Looking at it, it seems like a retail MD cart that has been removed from its shell, there's little bits of wire soldered to various parts, which could be hacks to get it to work as it is now or whatever I dunno (and it has two holes in which I assume are where a shell would be attached/screwed through), the only odd thing is, although there are sticks over the chips, they seem to be Mask ROMS rather than EPROMS... and I thought that EPROMS were the sign of a fake, whereas Mask ROMS were genuine...

Either way I'm glad I got it, as I can now play Sonic Crackers on my Megadrive :v:

The pengo prototype seems to be on more of proper dev cart...though I've never played a retail copy of the game... only the orginal Pengo arcade game on Emulator...which is a totally different game.

From the auction picture, the crackers cart is a normal sega dev cartridge. I would assume under the sticker is AMD chips? These are EEPROMS. Give us some better pictures :P

Just playing devil's advocate here, but really, you guys are writing all of this stuff and putting it on a wiki... don't you _wan't_ people to use it and reference it? I mean, for someone to think retro's wiki article is actually the most informed article on Crackers is a good thing and should be taken a compliment.

    Great film =)

True, however it can be a nuisance in cases such as here. Insted of giving a discription about the actual proto he/she has possesion of, and detailing that, he/she decided to present a link to the discription of a proto we already have and that we know well. I donno about you but this is basically what causes confusion and distrust.

On a side note, if this does happen to be a new proto unseen before, then I wouldn't mind attempting to disassemble it =P
