It's a good fit, you can't get much more linear than rollercoaster.

I don't care what anyone says, Sonic Spinball is the shit. One of my favorite spin offs ever, nice to see it getting a little homage.

Well, classic Sonic physics = pinball, so hopefully this is a hint given to fans by Sega for Needlemouse (since that is what the promotion is all about).

...or it's that Sega was trying to find a way to get attention, asked Alton Towers about which ride they cared about the least, they said "Spinball Whizzer", and BAM! instant promo. :P

Why doesn't the US ever get awesome Sonic based roller coasters like the UK does? D: You people are lucky.

The UK loves Sonic more, think about all the other cool shit they have that we don't. :argh:

I always wondered whether the title "Spinball Whizzer" was intentional!

Actually the amount of connections between Sonic and Alton Towers is amazing. First there is the Alton Towers theme (Hall of the Mountain King) which is used as the AOSTH theme. Second the ex-ride Toyland Tours had a Sonic section to it with Sonic themed music. And third (although this is less suprising) when I went there about 5 years ago there were Sonic plush toys as prizes in almost everything!

I actually like the pinball wizard reference more than the Sonic tie in, for this ride at least.

This. The closest I've ever come to seeing anything Sonic-related at a theme park recently was a Knuckles plush as a prize for a ladder-climbing game. And I suck eggs at anything athletic <_<

Extra points for Madame Tussauds if they make it indoors like the Black Hole was (with a cavern design), add a remix of the Toxic Caves music (like they did with the GHZ music in Toyland Tours) and replace the grass below with green sludge (lit from below).

Oh wow, what the hell? This'll be interesting to see it in blue.

It's still strange though, naming a rollercoaster after a game made about 17 years ago. Well I have no objections either way, it'll be awesome

You haven't been on it. It's shit. At least you get thrilling rides, not trash like this. Gives me a bad feeling what the game is going to turn out like when it's related to this ride....

  16. I'm wondering what their plans are with Rita, Queen of Speed. That would have been a much more logical step.
    WOAH, low and behold:
Maybe the entire park is being changed to a Sega-themed one? Post your baseless speculation here, folks.

Gathering information on Sega World Sydney and collecting Sonic merchandise.
I'm really starting to think we're entering a Sonic Renaissance. Ever since Sonic 06, Sonic games seem to be getting better and better. And Sega seems to be promoting him more, what with all these cool action figures and toys. And now that Sonic has a roller coaster, it starts looking more and more like the 90s, when Sonic was slapped on everything imaginable. I'd like to see that happen again.

It's not that bad, its much preferable to how Corkscrew was! However, being a Sonic themed ride they need to make it suitable for younger people. A ride like Nemesis, Oblivion, Air or Rita Queen of Speed would be too much for younger people. (Remember, there is minimum height limits on almost all the rollercoasters)

Dark Forest is to open in 2010 with a new roller coaster replacing Corkscrew, Thirteen. The area is to replace Ug Land, which opened in 1999.

The area's size was greatly reduced when the Rita - Queen of Speed roller coaster was built (themed as a drag racing contest, it did not fit the theme of cave-men but gave a clear contrast between the two time periods). The only rides left in the area with the pre-historic theme were Corkscrew and Ug Swinger, both of which have now been removed from the area, and the name of 'Ug Land' was starting to be called 'Thunder Rock Rally!' (Ug Swinger being moved to the new Cloud Cuckoo Land and rethemed as the Twirling Toadstool for the 2009 season.)

The area is due to be rethemed for the 2010 season, as phase 3 of Merlin Entertainment's regeneration plan, with a new "world's first roller coaster," due to replace the area which was previously occupied by Corkscrew.[8] The new ride has been unveiled as being called 'Thirteen'.[9]

    Attractions:

    Rita - Queen of Speed(Opened 2005, rethemed in 2010.)
    Thirteen(Opening 2010.)
    Soakasaurus(Opened 1999, rethemed in 2010.)[/QUOTE]

If this is to be believed Rita is only being changed to fit the new area. Its a shame though... an ASR ride would be cool! Just imagine the cars being in the shape of Forklift Trucks, eggmobiles, etc.

EDIT: Sorry, didn't realise that that was a double post.
