I really would prefer this to be checkered, but the basic concept is working. It's an improvement over the last version, less cramped and more faithful to the original.

    Present for you:

I tried to mimic the shading style from your non-checkered corkscrew on the checkered version, and it came out like this; I think it's turned out OK, though I'm sure there are others out there who can do a lot better job.

Also, to give a better idea how it might look in-place, here it is on the same blue as EHZ uses in your screenshot - though not at the correct resolution, it should give some idea how it might look.

Any comments / crits, please fire away! = )

EDIT: Don't know how many tiles you have to work with, so these may be useless, but also came up with some versions that better distinguish the 'background' and 'foreground' portions of the corkscrew by using different shading. Here's the two versions:

    "Mid"-shading:

    "Deep"-shading:

...And that's all for now. = ) Hopefully at least one of the three versions I've posted will be useful!

It doesn't really work. No fault through your part, it's just I think it's too low of a resolution to be able to get any detail that doesn't look like a mess. doc eggfan's shaded version actually looks quite nice.

I happen to like his first example, though the perspective does look a little weird.

I like all three examples, although the last is my favourite.

I don't like the heavy dark outlines on the checkered pattern. Is it possible to shade it more like the original render?

Hmm, hadn't considered that - I was focused on adding the shading to Eggfan's original corkscrew, which had the outlines already. Will give it a go, though am out this evening so will probably have to wait til tomorrow to crack on with that - the shading style of the original is a bit more complex since it uses faked anti-aliasing on some of the checkers to hide the fact the corners don't actually meet on some of them. = ) Having said that, if anyone else reckons they want to have a crack at it, please be my guest!

Also, a side note; I accidentally made a goof on the original image and added an extra shade of colour - for some reason in some areas the darkest red wasn't quite the same shade; have fixed this and re-uploaded the images as it was a really quick fix. = )

Yeah. You've done some great work, but I was kind of aiming for those outlines to disappear. I'm not even sure the spacing of the check outlines I did looks quite right.

Yeah, it does look better when you do that, but I don't know whether I'll have enough VRAM to do it. The original didn't either, so I've got an excuse not to.

Yes, I agree. The last one is my favourite also.

This is easily my favorite sonic related project. Just figured I'd say that.

This. It's one of the only projects that's really keeping my interest lately, if not only because of it's sheer scope.

This is probably a useless suggestion but... Are tiles assigned to a palette in VRAM or not until they're mapped to somewhere on the screen?
I know on the GBA you could set a palette at the OBJ level (in other words, per sprite). With the proper code changes, would you be able to apply a similar trick here to use the same tiles with different palettes?

That's a good idea. I'll have to think about it. It would take some palette rearranging, but it might be possible.

Ah, I see someone went for it. I was considering attempting it myself had no one else tried.

Is this more like what you guys had in mind?
It's only rough and I think I need some help with the shading and perspectives of the squares, but it gives an idea of what I had in mind.

Yeah, that's better. It's still not quite right, but I can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe try and keep the shading straight across, like the original, if you know what I mean.

Maybe the light spots, are too light?

I would have to agree. That dithered "light" in the middle just doesn't look right, maybe either remove it or increase the "length" of the shading by a few pixels.

How does it look with no Light yellow?

This one blends the yellow better.
