[parsehtml]LiQuidShade posted the following at Zone: 0's forums:
The level creator, whilst made in Flash, has surprisingly accurate physics and is very competent in play. The custom level available for use so far looks absolutely majestic, using the popular nick-bits-and-bobs-from-various-existing-levels technique to create something very aesthetically pleasing to the eye and pretty fun to play to boot! The currently available levels aren't necessarily complex, but they're a pretty good example of the kind of things you can do with this engine.

What do you think? Is this an upcoming sign of something fresh and new? Do you think the upcoming Project Needlemouse might take inspiration from this concept and also sport a level creation system? Do you think this concept will take off, or just sit around and fail due to being a flash application instead of something proper? Discuss!

And by the way, I call dibs on claiming the level for a hack. ;)[/parsehtml]

Wow! This is pretty amazing! Why can't SOA do anything this cool?
Is this all done in a Flash based emulator or is this all just Flash?

EDIT: So, after playing it, I found that the levels are in Flash themselves, I don't know about the games.
The game itself is... like a subpar version of Sonic 1, not super horrible (S1G) but not the greatest.
I kept falling through walls and floors and even got stuck on a tunnel where it kept shooting me up through the ceiling.

If there was any doubt that Sega knew we liked hacking, this is proof that they are fully aware of such projects now and even THEY condone level hacks these days. There more to this than the eye can see, but this could very well bust open a new "allowable" trend...in other words helping us do what we've already been involved with over the 10+ years.

Yes, the monitor image got stuck there. WTF? Also I found lots of other bugs only in my first playthrough :psyduck: Hint: if a monitor falls on your head, you'll fall through the floor, so be careful with that... although sometimes it could effectively turn into a shortcut.

Also screw that, only VIP accounts can make new levels :(

EDIT: also is somebody going to attempt to rip the MIDIs out of that? :P

Well, then, I'd better expect to see this level in the next build of Sonic 2 Megamix. :)

Anyway, that looks cool. It shows that Sega can be surreal and unique with zone environments when they want to be. Personally, I want to see what different levels Sega can come up with in the future for this application. It's sort of like an official SonED for amateurs.

Unfortunately, some Genesis-related physics are off, and these issues are the kind of things we've fixed in programs such as MMF2. Enemy projectiles still activate off-screen, monitors explode just by jumping near them, and enemies regenerate. However, the music is great, and even though I can tell where certain sprites came from (Green Hill, Marble Garden, Green Hills), the tiles are pretty neat.

Damn, this is really cool! Even if that level is just recycled material here and there, I have to say it's really damn nifty! Very surreal and appealing. They need to make something like this for a full retail release one day in the future, or as an extra in a later Sonic game. :)

This is awesome. Shows that SEGA is actually trying to make good stuff. It will be interesting to see what happens with this. :) That level is beautiful but buggy....

An interesting idea, though this engine is far from perfect - I managed to get myself stuck in a wall on numerous occasions, though that might be partly down to poor level design. It makes a pleasant change from plain old Green Hill Zone.

I'm guessing someone will probably come along and put all those nice level graphics to good use though.

Haha, maybe there will be a feature like this in Project Needlemouse? ;)

Probably not. :( But a man can dream.

  12. So Sega Passes work here.

Cool...but thats not getting me the level editor! Guess you have to pay up to be able to make any.

But this is awesome! I would like to see someone from Retro make a level with all our Sonic prowess/knowledge of the old games and create an amazing level with this editor.

Also I like the music choice for this zone...whatever it is!

If it did, unless the game had really wonky physics/controls, I'd be all over it. Seriously.

If the game was really short that'd probably make up for that completely. I'd just want a PC port of it because it seems like that would be easier to work with in.

Hrm. The level art is pretty interesting. If I had to give a level name to the level art, I'd call it Labyrinth Hill Zone - the grassy parts make me think of Green/Emerald hill to be sure, but there are other parts that wouldn't seem out of place in an underwater zone.

Yeah, Aquaslash just told me that. They sound like shitty MIDIs though...

But yeah, I'm dumb. Flash only can play MP3 files, at least by itself.

That was weird, I tried playing a level, but Firefox crashed, and logged me out the forum. Huh.

  20. Then somebody rip the MP3 of the level!
