Is it just me or does all the version of Hidden Palace Zone have too many drums? I think Hidden Palace should, if any zone, have few drums and focus on the main sample, if you get what I mean.

I do think they sound good through, but I don't think they'll fit with the theme of the level which is wonders and exploration and shit like that.

I would suggest trying these MIDI's. Yeah, I've tried doing stuff in FL Studio but I can't make anything good so forget it.

Ahh right, thanks. So in effect, we're basically aiming for sticking fairly closely to the original track, but with instrumentation the good ol' Mega Drive would never have been capable of? Kinda like what Hiroshi Miyauchi did with the SEGA AGES collection(s)?

P.S: Slight nitpick - that lead is actually a Sytrus patch, not a WASP one. :3 But thanks, I'll maybe change it up and see if I get something nicer.

I have some music if I'm allowed to show you it? I'd like it to be in the game -

Just a little idea, why don't you feature an alternative soundtrack with remixes of each levels music? That would be cool

And maybe even the option to use the original music, that would be nice for retrosake!

Annoyingly I can't record my music onto my computer right now, so I had to make a dumb video of the music.

Let me know what you think, if its worthy enough for the title card music. I'll try and get the proper full quality sterio recording ASAP ;)

The piano instrument is hurting the entire melody, try with a different one!

I've reworked it slightly - added in a bass/melody component it was missing, changed up some of the instruments (major kudos to HammerSound for that awesome Drumkit soundfont and Mr Ksoft for leaving a link to it 8D) and made some other changes. Suggestions for further tweaks and improvements welcome. I'm still not sure if I like the lead synth I used.

Incidentally, right around the 2 minute mark is something I'm thinking could be used as a basis for expansion on for an Act 2 remix, if we're going to be going for re-arrangements for separate acts.

About the 1up sound, just use the one from Sonic 3D Flickies Island (Saturn) and change the pitch. Hell, you can actually leave it as is, because it sounds just fine that way.

Also, Sonic Adventure DX's drowning is the best you're gonna get. Period.

Well, I got my pending membership, so I'm posting the Chemical Plant Zone work that I've done.

    http://media.odeo.com/1/7/3/Chemical_Plant...kowski__Guy.mp3

Just to clarify beforehand in case anyone has any questions. Structurally, this mix is mirroring about 95% of the original. A couple parts are changed in a very minor fashion, but outside of those minute changes, there is an extra layer for the last 52 seconds before the loop takes place. This extra layer is a synth lead solo which I can remove if that's considered a necessity. I also want to point out that there are two artists labeled for this track. The pattern for the melody I used in FL Studio is modified from a midi arrangement posted on vgmusic.com. I attempted to contact the second artst, Guy, with the email address supplied with the midi. However, the email account no longer exists. Either way, this person deserves his due credit.

All I'm going to ask is do you know the goal for the music, as well as this whole project, is to remaster Sonic 2 the way SEGA would have at the time? In other words, the music should be interpreted in a way that sounds like the original instruments OR the instrument the sound chip was trying to imitate.

Your contribution doesn't come very close to this goal, but maybe with the above-mentioned goal in mind you could produce a piece of music much more suitable for this project.

that sounds like it belongs on a NES or something. Not very High Definition at all.

Pretty much but we also want to preserve the original feel of the music. We want the player to have goosebumps and recall the same emotions they had way back when. That's very important.
(This means you WILL have to lose the bass intro, deviated bass line, and the drum fills no matter how cool you think they sound. BTW I liked the little additions too but they're not fitting for the project.)

Oh, and lol at my mistake at guessing the type of generator.

OK. I can make some changes. However, we don't really know how Sega would have remastered the tunes per se or what sounds they were trying to emulate. Also, if our goal is remastering, then I think I'm failing to understand why there are several mixes that have made it to the front page of this topic that sound like they're straddling the line between arrangement and remix. In fact, if our goal is to remaster, then why are we accepting "remixes"?

The CPZ song, while it does have some sounds that seem like they could be mimicking particular instruments, also has others that sound like they are just pumped out of an FM synthesizer. I've listened to all of the submissions here (the whole project), and some of them are even missing whole parts of their respective pieces. I really think that these arrangements are sending out mixed messages as to what the goal of the music portion of Sonic 2 HD is trying to acheive. The goals seem like they need to be redefined and enforced if they're going to be followed. I'm not trying to sound like a jerk here. This is just what I've picked up from the submissions that have made it to the front.

I understand why you would be confused, though if you look at the first page again you will see an updated goal/guideline (I have no idea what it said before) and an example of a remastered and a remixed version of Chemical Plant. Though my preference is the remixed version it still stays true to the overall feel of the original.

Still not getting why the decision hasn't been made to offer remixed AND remastered.

How about providing an unlockable item to hear the remixed versions after successfully finishing the game? You could put the option in the options menu to play the game over again with the remixes or the originals.

You can't expect everyone to give their creative and talented input and not want to have a voice in the final production of the game.

I must say that Emerald Hill GatoSoft remix sounds great!
I thought it was one of the most difficult tracks to remake because it didn't have any clear instruments at all...

    Pretty much perfect for me.

I've taken out the extraneous tweaks and worked to sound more like the original as per suggestions and guidelines.

I did still leave in the alternate thing at the 2 minute mark, but I can remove that and make a looping version of the track if needed :3

    What you guys think?

Aquaslash and s2fan have both commented on the possibility of both remastered and remixed tunes appearing in the game.

My thoughts on that are: look at how hard it can be to come to some kind of agreement on which remastered version of a given song is best for the project. If we have both remastered and remixed music for the game, that means we'll have to decide which remix should be included in the game. There's also a number of things you can change when you remix a song, so we could end up with a lot of possibilities we'd have to pick from, each with a distinct style that some may like and others may dislike.

Plus, from what I've seen so far, we're planning to use .OGG music for this. It doesn't seem like it would be too hard to replace whatever songs are included with whatever remixes you want.

I'm not claiming any say in what is ultimately decided on, but those are my thoughts.

To avoid posting twice in a row, I'll edit this in:
Ash Fox - I listened to your latest rendition of Chemical Plant. I like the lead instrument and the percussion samples. Throughout the song there's notes (in all instruments) that don't match the original, so you should look at that. That's the main thing that bugged me.
