Music Remastered

I'm pretty sure I'm not quite up to snuff to get anything into the project, but I decided to at least practice and took a shot at the options menu music (which I don't think has been done yet)

It's a bit on the synthy side, and the balance is off, but it's at least the basic idea. I can't really seem to get a good instrumentation going, it either sounds empty or too full and echo-ey.

 

I like those drums, but everything else leaves much to be desired.

What are you making this in? If you can send me your drums and whatever MIDI you used, I can make it sound a lot better.

The main flute is ok, but that electric instrument with it is really off, you could try with a different one?

My try at Chemical Plant Zone. Needs work, but I thought I'd post this anyway =P

 

I'm doing this in FL Studio. I worked out the tune on my own, but I could export a MIDI from it if you want.
The drums are the Ultimate Drums soundfont, using the "Kick and Snare [SC88]" sound bank contained within.
Ah, I've got such shitty selection of soundfonts and synths apart from those drums...

 

Irixion -- Hidden Palace Zone version 5 is pretty good, but again, the vocals just seem too quiet. I can hear them, but they're a bit too subtle.

Sonic 65 -- The background instrument (starting from 00:00-00:04) seems cause some delays when a few notes of it are played in sequence (00:41-00:42, 00:55-01:00) and just doesn't have the right feel to it. Especially at the beginning (00:00-00:04), I'd prefer a stronger instrument (that was the melody line in the original at that part, now it just feels like it's in the background). The arrangement is interesting, though. I don't know if it's has the feeling everyone will want for this particular song, but in its own right it's not too bad. As you said, it needs work, but I think it's a pretty good start.

 

I'll try something else for the vocals. Something different, thanks for the input.


I have to disagree with you Tweaker, I dislike those drums. I can give you good SFs if you want, Ultimate drums is anything but ultimate. Worst than a MIDI I'd say. I'll add you on msn and give you some good ones =P.

 

I have good soundfonts. What I was saying is that his choice in drums in that song specifically was a very good choice, and I think could be considered appropriate for that song.

In addition, I already have the Ultimate Drums soundfont, so I don't really need that...

 

I was talking to him, but ok, I do have one SF that is extremely rare (400 MB in size) . Kick ass shit right there, takes a long time to load on most PCs, but mine (Quad core 4 GB ram 500 HDD) loads it like nothing...

Irixion -- I could get used to the sax as lead instrument, but it's not what I'd choose. From 00:42-00:47, I don't disagree with switching instruments here, but this one's way too quiet compared to the sax.

Out of curiosity, what programs do you all use to write these songs? I was looking for some freeware stuff earlier, but I didn't really see anything that caught my attention. I've used MOD/S3M tracker software before but I don't have any samples to work with at the moment. It sounds like you're working with higher-quality SoundFonts anyway; my soundcard doesn't support SoundFonts natively so I have to use an emulator. I understand that I should probably invest some money if I want to make quality stuff, but I'm not good at writing music so I'm not sure I should spend a lot of money on it. If you have any recommendations, please PM me and let me know (since it's not really on-topic for the thread).

Here's my take on Chemical Plant - I made this maybe a year or so back. It's a standalone remix with a start, middle and a finish as it is, but I could easily tweak it to make a decent looping tune.

Thoughts?

 

Like the idea but I have to say that we're not really going for remixes but rather, remaster/remakes.

Very good quality instruments compared to some posted on here except I don't like that WASP off FL Studio effect for the lead melody or the unequalized sound of the track in general. I think it needs more midrange. I also thought the redone bass line sounded a bit too generic as well. Other than that great stuff.

 

I like all the versions of Hidden Palace Zone but something just feels a little off. Mr.Koft, thank you, someone has finally attempted the options screen music.

 

This one is much better, except at 0:20" there's a fading note that seems just wrong with the melody.

 

Well... here's my new version of Emerald Hill. I've fixed the bass replacing it into an Slap Bass and raising the pitch an octave. Also, I've retouched some notes that were bad... but I know it still need more work. When I've more time I will make a better version of it, but today is my birthday and I want to enjoy with my friends and family too. :P
