I notice this on slashdot a few minutes ago. It will be available through iTune stores for $4.99

I would think it'd be hard to control on the ipod, but if it works more power to them. Just don't let be as terrible as the GBA version..

I honestly can't tell if this is emulated or ported. It seems likely that it would be emulated, but then again, I can't really say how fast the iPod could run a fully functional Genesis emulator...

Well it says in the article that it's a port, but you can't say for sure. I would assume that it probably is a port due to the fact that it's being made so it can be played on the nano too. I would think that tiny thing wouldn't have the power for a full emulator.

A port requires the source code does it not?

Part of Team Megamix, but haven't done any actual work in ages.
They'll probably port it from the S1GBA source code... D:

Might just port it from Sonic Mega Collection.

Except for the fact that Mega Collection was emulated and not a port. Also I would think porting from a console such as gamecube to the ipod would not be fun and quite pointless.

Who was it that said they lost the original source code, and what was their evidence?

Trunks from Sonic CulT has bought the game and downloaded it - it's simply more emulation, using WAV files for sound to save CPU cycles. Nothing to see here, folks, same ol' crap as usual.

Another thing I noticed when I got home are the slight changes in the art most likely to accommodate for the change in aspect ratio since the Genesis is 320x224 and the ipod screenshot is at 300x225. I resized a genesis screenshot just for comparison purposes. So is this actually not going to be a port or emulation and be another remake like Sonic 1 GBA? If it is they better get it right this time.

Edit- was making my post when Tweaker made his so I guess my statement is kind of voided, but I'll just leave it there for now though.

Sonic Mobile's code bears a strong resemblence to the routines found in the Sonic 1 disassembly.

Hell, Sega could have disassembled their own game. Of course, they probably didn't lose it.

Coming to grips with the fact that I've almost been here 20 years
As I recall, Naka stated in an interview that they no longer had the Sonic 2 source. Or perhaps he just meant that he didn't have it, since there is a Sonic 2 mobile, if I remember correctly. Alternatively, I perhaps Sega, or Naka for that matter, don't want people asking for the source all the time. (Kinda iffy, but I suppose it's possible)

    Just one of those things.

There is a Sonic 2 Mobile...japanese only. If remember Stealth looking at the Sonic Mobile code, and also said that it's likley that they had the source code. Though I always found it odd that the UFO graphics were still in.

Edit: Good God....63 MB? Why is it so huge?

Each level has 9 files. GHZ files looks like:

    z1m
    z1a1map.bin
    z1a2map.bin
    z1a3map.bin
    z11at.dat
    z11bnk.dat
    z12at.dat
    z12bnk.dat
    z13at.dat
    z13bnk.dat
