Shade might be the one I'm most convinced is a red herring, if only because I doubt Sega would want to kick that hornet's nest.

 

The copy-paste text doesn't surprise me, it could just be some placeholder. The fact that half this shit is in the game at all is wild. If Manic and Sonia really end up in the game, it feels impossible that they'd actually be related to Sonic.

 

Since the developer and publisher is Rovio, I should mention that they sometimes do stuff like this. Rovio's just like this for some reason

 

This is crazy and all, but I wonder how a Sonic TCG would actually work. Most TCGs flop after a couple of years. Pokemon is still popular, but hardly anyone (at least anyone appropriately young) actually plays it. It's more about the collecting hobby now.

 

Maybe, but I am willing to vowch for the Classic Characters - not only because they have Modern Models but also because of TailsTube



They made an entire TailsTube detailing that Mighty, Ray, Hooligans, and Trip still exist in the Modern Canon.

 

It literally is impossible for all these things to coexist at the same time. Has to be multiverse shenanigans, serious rewriting in the final product if this stuff makes it there, or it’s just going to be a deformed, pulsating mass of contradictions, retcons, and unanswered questions.

 

It's probably designed with obsolescance in mind. Get people hyped for characters we never thought we'd see again, charge out the ass for them to make their money, and after everyone moves on from the gimmick and it stops being profitable, pull the plug.
The only thing this game has of value to us as a community is new renders and models for these characters.

 

It could also be, and hear me out on this, a non-canon mobile game where they don't have to acknowledge continuity.

This seems to be an answer to Marvel SNAP. From the looks of it, that game is alive and well.

 

How I'd describe this is, it's sort of a historical usage, just like the entire Chronicles entry in the Encyclospeedia. Ken didn't really have any objection to that from what I remember.

What's interesting is that everything so far avoids pretty much any character he or other People who still own their Sonic characters made, like Tiara or like that. Cosmo (?) might legitimately be the most objectionable thing since X characters are supposedly an extra layer of copyright nonsense.


Also, temporary or not, seeing what is most likely Nibroc's Norm and Captain Whisker in an official game's files is crazy because I think I provided the original model rips he would have used to make them long ago. It's a technicality but... I made it????

 

If I recall correctly, his actual response was "Pfft, you think SEGA is actually PAYING ATTENTION to anything Ian put in that book????". As if that somehow makes a difference.

Lending to the "they just grabbed random shit" theory of not-actually-in-the-game, one of the names in the datamined strings is Hawkhawk, a random one-off from the Archie Sonic Guardians of the Galaxy parody (made during a time Penders and Bollers were both unavailable to write for the series), who is a pre-reboot character, not owned by SEGA, and a direct self-parody by Jim Valentino. No matter what ends up in the game, I'm almost certain that one's not gonna make it.

 

Shade, Cosmo, and Honey make me think some of this stuff is just there as a kind of preliminary list of who they want to include and not something that was run by Sega yet.

 

Ya'll hyped over characters. Me? I'm hyped for a card game.

 

Honey is fair game, at least. She's in a whole two panels of a classic IDW story, but she's out in the open and obvious.

...yeah I can feel the disappointment wave coming.

 

What's really interesting is that Antoine DOES have an attack in the code that involves team-up with Bunnie.
It may not mean much, but it does keep things interesting.

 

Sonic doesn't have anywhere near the brand power of Marvel. Not even close. Also, Snap is less than two years old, and its player numbers are dwindling, so I'd like to see where it's at a year from now.

I'd very much love to play a Sonic TCG if it was good, like 2005-era Yugioh. But the point needs to be the game, and not just a bunch of
