Rare Sonic Art (And restoring it)

God damn do I hate what the digital versions' shading did to the original art sometimes.

King Max looks more like a wireframe model than crystal, Tails' namesakes went from a spinning whirlwind to a plexiglass funnel and the Death Egg looks as flat as a pancake.

 

I'm guessing these wallpapers aren't rare, but I downloaded and extracted them anyway. What I did find interesting is that in the HTML there's some commented text;

Presumably those were the previous wallpapers on that page from before the first time it got archived.

Surprisingly the wayback machine archived those files, even though they weren't linked outside of the HTML source, so maybe they've been missed before.

Hello everybody! Thanks for the interesting material you posted here.

Here's some pics I had on my PC from different media... Sonic Advance 2, Heroes, CD... Hope they weren't posted already.

 

Having now got my manuals and such from New Zealand, I've scanned my Sonic Drift 2 and Tails Adventure manuals at 1200PDI and extracted the artwork from them.



Now Fang has the little ball on his car, and Fururukov isn't so blotchy!

 

Two pencil cases have been scanned!

The leaked trailer didn't have any logos, just "COMING SOON...".

Sonic 3 Genesis? Was there a version of 3 planned?

 

Probably not, I think they just took a pre-existing logo file and edited it to make this. The 3 was hidden behind a layer mask in the Photoshop file.

 

Whoa, they actually just degreased Sonic??? That might explain why it looks a little... bleached on the scans.

 

Yeah, it's just color-corrected.
To be honest, I thought that scan from SEGA Forever was a recent thing but it's the same one used here.

For this last one the box was too big for my scanner so I had to do it by parts and then put it together on photoshop.

 

You can see Sonic slowly mutate to his Adventure design from box to box. It's almost frightening lol

 

Why is Eggman sporting a clown nose here?

 

I think it was just the artist's style. Even Sonic & Tails look a bit different to what they look like on the S2 JP cover art.
