It's gonna feel so good to beat down Mephiles. That pathetic excuse of a death scene still lives in my mind, and to this day it is still the most pathetic death of a protagonist I've ever seen. ... Well, unless you count Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League.

Gonna be honest…not caring much for Keanu’s Shadow voice in this trailer. I’m going to try and give grace since it’s a very brief snippet, but the delivery feels so stilted and disengaged. Happy for Ian getting to write for Keane, but man I’m wishing we’d got Hayden Christensen as Shadow instead.

In terms of the content proper, just about the only thing here that doesn’t look good is Shadow himself. The movie designs become really choppy the moment they’re adapted into another medium for my tastes (not helping is that movie Shadow, I think like movie Sonic, has three spines instead of two in the middle column on his head). It’d be nice to have the option to use the regular Shadow design in this level after beating it for the first time, but I get the suspicion that’ll need mods.

    >Re-release of an older game where you can play as the rival character in their own campaign and the original main character is one of the bosses.

Welcome back Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition.

You know what? I'm okay with movie shit being the DLC stage. I thought I was going to be pissed off that they sawed off a stage from the main game and made it DLC, but it's just a promotion for a movie that's not even canon to the games, and the rest of the thing looks like a meaty product on its own.

So apparently, all they needed to do to not get me upset about Dream Team was to set it in a continuity I don't care about that much.

Nice to have my theory proven that the movie designs, as much as they generally aren't my ideal designs for the cast, look good if not great in an in-game setting. And certainly worlds better than the stock designs we've been stuck with for the last forever.

Like what the fuck IS this even anymore? lmao
(accuse me of cherry picking if you must, history will absolve me)

Anyway, assuming this runs good on Deck (don't see why it wouldn't) and reception is generally good here, I'll be picking it up tout suite, which feels surreal to me. Last time I was actually excited for a 3D Sonic game was the first time Generations came out and I pretty much gave up on it ever happening again after that. Let's goooooo

Nah. As aged as Unleashed Sonic model looks by now, at least it doesn't have the punchable face of movie!Sonic.

I'm on the opposite side of that view. They work for the movies, but the loss of detail in both this Shadow render and the ones from Speed Battle makes them look a little odd. Especially around the eyes.

I don't think Sonic will be a boss fight in Shadow Generations. I think it will just be a cutscene. I will be very surprised if rival fights end up being a thing tbh.

As a non-mandatory tie-in DLC I'm fine with it - it's just a fun extra for those who enjoy the movies and are excited for the next one, and is easily ignorable for those who aren't bothered. Though I completely agree that I don't want anything like a Sonic/Movie Sonic crossover game, or a full-on Movie Sonic: The Game in future; I'd rather they focus on making the next main Sonic title as good as it can be rather than cramming movieverse spin-offs into the mix as well.

Also, very interesting stuff in that story trailer for the main game - I'm interested to see what Gerald and Maria will look like in-game beyond the brief teaser at the end there! Interestingly, from what we can see, it seems Gerald is an amalgamation of his Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog designs; he's slimmer with a more plain jacket like his original appearance, but still seems to have his super-bushy Eggman-like moustache from the latter.

Like or not stuff from the movies in the games, you have at least to admit SEGA had balls to get Keanu Reeves in their game. And like, despite the model looking weird, it the rest of the package on DLC looks very solid. Like, Sonic Team did put a genuine effort on this.

Nor am I, but I really can't complain about this. This is a part of the digital deluxe DLC. Its a single level and skin that you have to purchase separately, it has no story relevance and is being released 2 months later than the rest of the game. It's literally just a harmless promo.

When it comes down to it, SEGA would be outright stupid (or dumber than usual) to refuse an opportunity like the one that Shadow Gens - or more specificslly this Movie DLC persists for the brand.

Licensing out the Sonic IP for a third time for an inevitably successful third entry that will do alright with reviews but big-time at the holiday box office is one thing.

Kids will end up going to theaters and realizing Shadow is the coolest, sure they might not know Keanu Reeves but Movie Shadow is gonna leave a lasting impression at the end of the day.

Which will lead kids to asking for “The Sonic and Shadow game” for Christmas, especially when they find out they can get the deluxe version / online store DLC that gives them DLC based on the Movie they like.

It’s a repeating cycle of business that loops into itself, with Shadow at the center of it all.

Look, I get not wanting the Movieverse to become the Mainline Series, or at least not outright changing things for the sake of it, but considering general statements from Sonic Team or at least that Game Shadow considers his Movie design to be, “Another form”, it’s pretty clear that the Movies and Games are separate. With that in mind, my input is just to let it ride. Because there isn’t anything this series doesn’t gain for, having publicity like “Keanu Reeves will voice act Shadow in DLC”

In the end if it worries anyone so much about the mixture of Movie and Games content, then go ring up Ian Flynn on Bumblekast for the cost of a Turkey sandwich. I’m sure Ian Flynn wouldn’t mind answering a WORTHWHILE question for a change.

TLDR: The Movie 3 Tie-In DLC is one of the best moves SEGA could make with this game, until anyone starts flossing or Sonic has his Movie Backstory canonized then just let it ride, and if it bothers you go ask Ian Flynn

I'm pretty sure that's also to help the movie to suceed on Japan. It will be good for both SEGA and Paramount.

Honestly I'm surprised it's taken them this long to tie-in the movies into one of the games like this, outside of Sonic Dash/Forces and the little movie-related trinkets that came with Sonic Colours Ultimate.

This is such a obvious easy-win-win for both Sega and Paramount that it's unusually smart for Sega, to be honest!

But yeah I can't see the movie canon sneaking into the main games anytime soon beyond this. This is literally the perfect place to do this: a game focused on the history of the franchise with multiple versions of characters. And it's DLC, so it's separate in many ways from the main "canon" I suppose.
