Sonic Superstars: A New 2D Sonic Game (Fall 2023)

Even if most of the Digital Deluxe stuff is not exclusive, you know all of it as separate DLC is going to be sold in about three packs of £5 each again, just like with previous games they did it with (and the upcoming Samba). It's such a disgusting money-grabbing tactic at a time when everything is getting more expensive.

Sega have been doing some really cool stuff with Sonic lately but I feel like I'm being priced out of a lot of it.

 

With Sega's shitty practices (looking at you Origins) I have no choice but to wait for this game to sell cheap with its DLC in a few years.

 

A skin for Max the Rabbit is really cool, that gives me a good reason to pre order the game. Honestly an awesome callback. Though I'm still split on whether I'll get it for PC or Switch!

 

That Mecha Tails design is interesting. Seems to take some inspiration from the Tails Doll (red gem, now embedded in forehead), but is otherwise distinctive (dual butt rockets to replace twin tails).

 

Along with Metal Tails and Metal Amy!

Looks like they're multiplayer battle mode skins only, which is still a nice way to bring these guys back from the scrap heap. You can switch out different parts for your multiplayer avatars. I'm not entirely sure if we're going to get Tails Doll though, considering that they created a brand new Metal Tails for this.

I wonder if modders will be able to transfer any of forces customizable assets to superstars. Tbc I understand that would be a HUGE task… but it would be awesome if people were able to play superstars as their avatar from forces. Maybe sega could take care of this as paid dlc.

 

I know blah blah multiplayer blah blah

But someone has sign off on "Green Hill Zone again", and when you put it side by side with Sonic Generations, a 12 year old video game released two console generations ago, it's embarasasing how simple this rendition is. Even if it was Emerald Hill Zone, at least it would make a change. Christ, Marble Zone would have been a more inspired choice.

It looks like one of those throwaway "Super Smash Bros: Sonic edition" fan games you might have seen at SAGE a decade ago.

 

Chemical Plant and Sky Sanctuary for Battle Mode when?

 

Genuinely fuck that guy for spoiling the surprise, there was literally no reason to do it. But hey now I guess people can say "oh he's that guy who spoiled that one game the day before the information was supposed to be revealed, he's legit". That's really not what leaking is about, but you can give him credit now!

 

The Battle Mode seems to have multiple mini modes from bot bashing, collecting, and what appears to be a racing mode. 4 player split screen, but the final bot bashign clip showed 8 players, but on a single screen that's only tracking one character. Guessing the online mode is 8 players?

Hopefully the racing mode is decent enough, although I'm assuming none of the campaign tracks are going to be available in the Battle Mode. That's going to fucking suck.

 

Yeah I'm somehow getting Neo Sonic (or something) vibes from this battle mode which is giving me hilarious mixed feelings. Everything about this is just plainly what we should have got from Sonic 4, that includes the limp but acceptable-for-2010 aesthetic. I'm still hyped because they are absolutely obligated to get the gameplay right at this point but yeah it's sad to see Sega's seemingly still unwilling to splurge on the details despite how successfully the franchise is going.

Looks like that digital zone I was complaining about earlier at least has multiple transformations and the rocket looks more fun than the jellyfish but it's the only thing I see about the gameplay that bothers me so far.

did anyone noticed Bridge Island theme is actually updated here? Or... it is an Act 2 theme?

 

Ugh, I'm going to have to buy the Digital Deluxe for the rabbit and Mecha Sonic. Capitalism is bad apart from when I'm a dumbass and buy into the consumerism.

 

I feel like I'm going to need some proper gameplay footage to get a better sense of what exactly that battle mode is from a gameplay standpoint, it seems really busy and largely divorced from the main campaign. It's probably something that could had used its own trailer (if not more than 10 seconds devoted to it at the very least) if it truly is its own thing packaged into Superstars.

This isn't necessarily an outright veto on it; if anything, Sonic should had gone the Kirby route of making whatever alien ideas they had into minigames that accompany the core game years ago, instead of butchering the playstyle for the sake of shoehorning it in there somewhere. I'm just more confused on what exactly is going on. I've quickly resigned on it not being another 2P/competition mode in the vein of 2/3&K/Mania; but I'm seeing so many other things going on with it that it's hard to pin down. Game Land from Colors, Sonic Battle, the Advance games (at least with how densely packed together the platforms are), the Mario Vs. Luigi mode from the original New Super Mario Bros. on the DS...

 

ah yeah you're probably right. I've noticed there's a robot/mech theme going on with these customizable characters, so the Tails Doll probably wouldn't fit in with that. Metal Tails looks cool though and the red gem is a nice callback

 

LEGO seems like such a weird tie-in to advertise so prominently that it's in the Deluxe Edition's name. Strikes me as a little tacky, honestly, especially for a game I figured might have $10 or so knocked off the price, not added onto it.

 

Metal Knuckles returns from the dead! And the rabbit costume! It’s not Mighty and Ray but I’ll take it.

As for the meh GHZ, idk I kinda get it it’s a multiplayer map that supports up to 8 players. It might get hard to see if it’s too busy.
