3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2
22 July 2015 - 09:44 AM
The game is now out on the Japanese store. Since I've recently invested in a Japanese 3DS, I got the game right away.
Since we've already played Sonic 2 to death, I'm only going to comment on the 3D additions / whats new.
- Sega yell sounds broken right off the bat. Funny that the most striking part of the boot-up sequence didn't get attention.
- Emerald Hill has had the most love, with tiles in the solid rock areas sticking out, staggered 3d palm trees and flowers, and the backdrop in 3D. This level is probably the most balanced in terms of 3D usage.
- The special stages appear to either be remade and rendered in 3D, or possibly redrawn as 3D. Its obvious it switches between the original and old when you turn 3D off and on. The resolution on both is not enhanced however. I wonder how this is being done, it would be nice to see the code.
- Chemical Plant receives the least 3D love to my disappointment. The BG is on one layer and the level is on another. The water isn't on a different level and neither are the pipes. At the very least the mesh could have been in 3D like Metropolis zone is.
- Aquatic ruin isn't much better, however the BG is parallax at least.
- Casino night is just 'ok' with the neon lights and pinball table on one layer, level layout on another. The stars in the sky stand out pretty well.
- Hill top is a downer because most of the extra 3D goodies from Emerald Hill are not here. That doesn't make sense to me. Also, the cave sections in 3D are slightly odd as the grass floor tiles overlap and can be seen squarely cut between two 3D layers.
- Mystic Cave is fantastic! This was very surprising to me. They put effort into making the rocks stick out, and the backdrop looks beautiful in 3D. For the first time ever I feel like I'm in a deep dark 'mystic' (lol) cave. The detail in the purple rock background hasn't stood out to me so wonderfully before.
- Oil ocean is nothing amazing in 3D. Some poles are on a different layer.
- Metropolis is great. The 3D mesh wheel has had some love. And the level geometry has depth.
- Sky chase clouds are in 3D layers but thats it.
- Wing Fortress has 3D layers on the plane parts but it looks kinda odd. Nothing special. The chase up to space is pretty flat with the exception of sonic appearing closer than Eggmans ship. The conveyor belt is not fixed. ( no movement )
- Death egg inst very 3D but you can catch a glimpse of the space layer outside, moderate depth but still not on the Mystic Cave level.
- The ending is still black and white. The plane, propeller, and sonic are on different layers.
So all in all, 3/11 Zones actually look good in 3D. In comparison, I thought all the levels in Sonic 1 looked amazing in 3D. This has actually made me less excited for a port of Sonic 3 - I believe with the increase in level detail and the amount of levels has caused M2 to get a little lazy - not all levels have the polish they need. I think If they attempted something as large and detailed as Sonic 3 / Knuckles they would have even less time to make the effect warranted.
Hell, it may not even be possible with the 'GigaDrive' setup they have going with all the detail in Sonic 3. Maybe a palm tree here or there. -
Landstalker / Shining Force (2) Similarities
26 June 2015 - 07:00 AM
So somehow Landstalker slipped through the cracks of my Megadrive collection. I only stumbled upon it listening to Megadrive music on youtube.
After playing for about 15 minutes it became painfully obvious just how close the setting & music is like the Shining Force Series, particularly Shining Force 2.
I'm not going to ask if the universes are the same, because it seems like those discussions have been had somewhere else, but I was more interested just how closely these games were developed.
On the wikipedia article for Camelot Software, it actually mentions that the two companies were formed alongside each other to make Shining in the Darkness and Shining Force 1. What it doesn't mention is the connection between the later games at all.

Does anyone have any more info for development between these two games? -
Changing entry points / functions in DLLs?
21 April 2014 - 12:26 AM
Hey guys, This isn't directly Sonic related but you guys are the only ones I know that have serious hacking skills.
I have 3 DLL files.
The first one, a.dll loads b.dll and c.dll. But B and C are from a later version than A. So the entry points / offsets are incorrect. Trying to start the Dlls result in 'Procedure entry point XCd229cc00001d could not be located in the dynamic link library b.dll'
Using dependency walker I can see the function calls that are broken. I can also see the available functions in B if I load it.
Can anyone help me out here? I'm not sure how I can remap the entry points. Any help would be greatly appreciated. -
Super Nintendo CD-Rom Drive Tech documents

Forgive me if this has already been posted on Retro, but I didn't see it.

From the article:
Quote
Lin uploaded to Twitter countless page scans detailing the specifications of the SNES-CD add-on, along with programming guides and much much more - potentially filling in huge gaps in video game history. The entire collection seems to have been archived in PDF format, although it does leave one question... is there more than enough information within to make a homebrew effort re-creating this fabled system? We can only dream, but either way be sure to check out what we may have been playing back in the early nineties. -
Sonic game collections
16 November 2013 - 06:05 AM
Hey guys. I decided after the release of Sonic Lost World some of us needed a pick me up, so I took out all my games I could find and took a picture. (5mb, here)

I'd like to take a look back on memories, stories and enjoyment of the Sonic games in the past 22 years. I'd also like to hear and see pictures of sonic game rarities that are in your personal collections!
Some of my favorites in my possession is the first4figures, pictured in the top of the photo. It was given to me as a 21st birthday present from my parents and mailed to me from Australia to Canada.
My Sonic & Knuckles & Sonic 3 (Platinum) for Megadrive was given to me by my friend who has since passed away.
I was given SonicCD for PC (to the right of the SonicCD for MegaCD in the picture) for Christmas when I was about 6. For those that don't know the PC cutscences were far superior to the MegaCD version and you could play the AVI files right from the disc, So I never had to work for the good ending in the game!
I'd spend hours playing Sonic 1 SMS in the early morning before school, I remember the first time I finished the game, I bumped it right before the credits and froze my master system!
TL;DR : Lets see some unique Sonic game collections and stories.
