Sonic Engine Question
27 August 2008 - 02:11 PM
Hi there guys. I'm looking to call upon your wealth of techical knowledge if possible.
BACKGROUND
I currently teach a Key Skills module on an FdSc. Game Design and Development course. This module involves teaching the basic skils of Communication, IT and Application of Number to a level of competence befitting of HE students.
Application of Number means maths, and for last year's assignment many of the tasks were based upon designing a level for a Mario clone using 10 unique tiles whereby with a powerup the main character could launch a fireball - the angle which the fireball launch at and reflected at depended upon the user defined speed to be represented by an algebraic equation. Collision was to be considered and the proportion of solid and non-solid parts of the level were to be calculated and presented in a graphical format.
This was actually quite popular, however, as I am teaching the subject again this year I would prefer not to make the assignment tedious for any students who may be re-sitting.
Hence I would like to change it up somewhat and base it on a Sonic clone.
REQUEST
I have spent many years lurking around these boards (and others) and have toyed somewhat with art editing and the like but not done so much with ASM, hence to investigate the engines of the Genesis Sonic games would be beyond me to do (at least it would be by the time I have to write this assignment).
Yet in some posts that stick in my mind and in mentions around some fangame sites such as SFGHQ I seem to remember trigonometry playing a part in Sonic's character movement.
What I'd like to know is - how? Not from a language perspective (I understand there are MMF tutorials and the like) but from a maths perspective. What needs to be calculated? What variables are there that would alter the results?
If you can be of help I will be eternally grateful. -
Music Similarity

This has been on my mind for many years so I finally decided to check it out.
Sabrina Johnson - Peace
Sonic Adventure -Join Us 4 Happy Time (Chao Race)
The structure of the songs are almost identical - the differences are obvious, as in the main melodies differ, however the two songs could meld superbly (and would be a challenge I would go for in some years unless someone gets there first).
I'm not suggesting anything ridiculous like OMG first Michael Jackson now some other bird! However, will put this out there for discussion nonetheless.
If in wrong place then please move me mods.
