Reset from Sega CD Quirks
03 June 2012 - 08:40 PM
Noticed a little funsy today.
I've always played with the fact that if you throw a cartridge into the genesis while CD music is playing, it'll crash the Sega CD software but the music continues to play off the CD (looping, in fact). Resetting lets the music continue to play (custom soundtracks!) and the cart game will start up.
I only noticed today though that RAM isn't cleared whatsoever during this reset process, allowing for some fun:

I've tried this on my CDX, and unfortunately the cd music stops on reset.
Is this because my first genesis has no TMSS that this works at all? -
Little Door-Mounted Holiday Greeter
14 December 2011 - 01:37 AM
So I'm in Computer Science House (CSH) at RIT, and I made this little holiday greeter. Since I do a lot of Game Boy mods I have a lot of spare parts that are otherwise unusable for selling. For this, though, they are fine (lines in the LCD that aren't fixable, etc).
The ribbon cable connects the LCD, controls, and speaker to the motherboard on the inside of my door (so hooligans can't take those parts). The backlight is an electroluminescent panel.
Anyway, here's a little video of it.

I noticed this the other day. These two songs are remarkably similar, especially the second half:

Super Mario 3 Dev
15 July 2010 - 06:55 PM
I just thought I'd share this with you guys here - someone posted this on reddit; it's some japanese kids book that focuses on how nintendo games are made, and it focuses on Mario 3! It has some really excellent pictures. My favorite one's got to be watching the graphics artist edit the mario sprite tiles on the large monitor with the arrangement on the left. Striking resemblance to TLP!

MD Pro Flash Cart
29 June 2010 - 08:03 PM
I have one of the tototek MD Pro Sega Genesis / MegaDrive flash carts. I can't get the damn thing to cooperate with any PC I've tried. I've tried four different ones - running Windows 98, 2000, XP, all of them, with the correct port settings, and a multimeter-tested-functional paralell cable, and absolutely none of them see the cart in the included dreamwriter software. Using Oerg's custom software, I got a bit further (as it's a frontend for Ucon64) but it halts due to some sort of permission issue with IO.SYS under XP despite my being the administrator account. Windows 7 is out of the question being 64-bit. Shame, it's my main OS.
I saw Oerg made some flavor of a DOS boot-CD that has some cart diagnosis; this would be super useful but all links to it are down.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Or perhaps does someone want to let me send them the cart and a disc full of things to put on it, flash it, and send it back? I'm getting desperate and I needed this months ago.
