Take a look at 0:06 onward. There's new, interesting footage of the Green Hill Zone boss.
EDIT: Damn. Anyone who can find me the Pirate TV Sega ads that broadcast in the UK will be my hero

YES, at last somebody has uploaded that ad!
I brought up this red ball thing many years ago and nobody seemed to know what was I talking about. Thanks for the link.

Interesting that the HUD says "RINGS", yet we've seen screens of the GHZ boss as normal with the checkered ball. Also, is it me or does the ball's sprite appear to rotate in real time? It looks more like a video edit than an actual feature of the game, to me..

I've clipped out only the frames with the boss fight, put them in high-bitrate XviD (I chose 10000kbps but it only uses what it needs, so it's substantially less), and uploaded the resulting AVI
here.

Something else I noticed: the ball does no damage to Sonic. He starts off in the middle of it :/

Hmm, that is pretty odd. Thanks for showing the site though. I love the Sonic 2 "Infomercial".

Heh, my brother used to say that they might have edited it so it looked like the apple in Castle of Illusion (also featured in one of those ads).

That's really weird.
The rotation is what gets me....is it rotating in different directions as it moves? Why would they edit it anyway? Crazy....

I've been analizing the frames. The ball looked sort of pasted on top to me, so I checked out the frames where the ball starts to go behind the left platform. If you look at this picture;
as the ball goes behind the left platform, a part of the platform goes missing, and the ball becomes slightly mishaped. If I had to have a theory, I would put forward the idea that in this version of the game, for whatever reason, the ball is not visable, and so this rather fancy ball was put on during editing (but rather sloppy, if I am right).
Pure speculation but hey, it does look too good for the Genesis to me.

Looks more like video quality issues if you ask me.

Not really, if you look a good portion of the platform goes away. You'll notice it better if you watch it frame by frame in Media Player / Winamp or whatnot. The corner of the platform (where it's dark) is covered by the ball rather than the ball going under it, and it only starts to go under the platform from about the seccond 'square' in (the light square) on the platform.
It just looks edited to me.
Anyway, look at the shading of the thing. Could you even manage that with the pallete used / on the genesis?

Awesome find!
It would be interesting to have a video of Sonic on the checkered ball( like in the beta pictures) too
