I don't thinks it's known yet. The "lost" fireball art in S2 beta (located at 7436C) is still in S2 final (located at F0B06). I think this was overlooked because nemesis guide says it's from HTZ. (...it's not)

meh

interesting. If that lost fireball's intention was to burn the bridge down, and it wasn't implemented in the beta, why would they keep it in the final?

My theory...

Sonic Team were stoned.

Naka: "Let's move log to different area in ROM."

Other Guy: "Why we do that Mr. Naka-san? It make no sense since we not use it."

Naka: "Er... Pass me Eggman-shaped bong slave!!!"

Other Guy: "Yes sir..."

I noticed this a couple of weeks ago but thought it was already known. I thought it was part of the whole burning bridge thing myself.

Pure speculation: It's possible that after the idea of wasps burning bridges was scrapped they considered burning them with fireballs in HTZ. The problem is there are no bridges in HTZ... I'll go with the stoned Sonic Team theory.

Meh, I suppose they could have planned to do something with it, and by the time the release date came around, they just... forgot about it.

Remember that the game was never intended to be analyzed to the extent of which we are analyzing it.

The burning log was simply another thing that they decided wasn't something worth adding to the game, so they scrapped it.

..I don't think this was meant to burn the bridge. Look at the size, now compare it to the bridge. It's much to small.

It was one of my first discoveries in 2001. In fact, I think it's still loaded in the VRAM when Emerald Hill is on...

I also remember IceKnight told me it was from HTZ.

I did? If so, I must have been thinking of the unused lava balls that are shot diagonally in groups of two.

My theory.

The fireball is a ball of fire, shot out of lava, fire, a badnik, or some other fireball slinging device. I also theorize that Sonic would get hurt, therefore scattering his rings as per norm, apon contact with said fireball.

There is not pointer to these graphics, therefore they are unused. Not loaded into the VRAM of any level.

The other fireball however, is loaded into the VRAM of EHZ.
