I tried making a skybox edit earlier this year (so far the only SADX mod I made) if it's any help:

Posted Image

It's just a handful of levels and they aren't great quality but if they could help as resources in any way I can reupload (since the link is now broken).

Truthfully I think being stretched onto a basic jagged polygon 'sky' shape doesn't help (no matter how many times I tried editing Emerald Coast's it still looked like you were trapped inside a painted box). If anyone's got the resources to 3D model and test new smoother shapes to refine that it could make a world of difference.

That's exactly how the 2x normal mode upscale looks ingame, it's too blurry and, as you said, it looks like an oil painting which is far from what it was originally intended to look like.
PS: I remember your skyboxes edits, Emerald Coast looked as nice as it possibly could.
The issue is that with all that colour banding, it's impossible to upscale them and keep them not blurry without rerendering them. And the skyboxes geometry itself as you said is not ideal.

I think Casinopolis is ready for an early release, it's not finished yet, but it's just to show you guys what it looks like when all the tiny details are brought to life.

Use with the DC Mods (obviously) and load it AFTER them (or else it won't work).
Explore the Knuckles stage, get to the top too to see the monitors!
Can't wait for feedback!

EDIT:
So I made a new texture from scratch for the SS skybox that looks pretty close to the original one:

Original 2x upscale:

Maybe I can tweak it to look a bit better, but would you guys like stuff like that? Would it be ok if I remade some from scratch? Even if it's not 100% accurate?
I could make these ones optional if you want accuracy.

Definitely from scratch. I'd even encourage you to do as many textures as possible from ground up. Otherwise your work will be technically an upscale and it will be Sonic 2 HD phase 1 all over again.

From scratch. It's not as though people will really notice or care if a 16x16 pixel chunk of cloud is in a slightly different position from vanilla. So long as the graphic artists' intent makes it through, there shouldn't be an issue.

That's how I feel too. I think that as long as the recreations are still faithful to the original concept, rather than being 100% pixel accurate to the original art, it should be ok.
Still asking for feedback, though, as I want to know how people feel about it!

EDIT: By the way, did anybody try the Casinopolis release? How does it look?

I've been working on some of the GUI elements as of late, mainly the menu background and the stages title cards.
These are going to be included in PkR's HD DC Style GUI mod, the main menu background has already been released in one of the latest updates (might be subject to change).

Preview of the title cards:

These have been completely remade from scratch, no upscale whatsoever. Decided to do so 'cause of the low resolution of the spin thing on the left and the color banding on the gradients!
Hope it's accurate enough, let me know if you guys spot anything weird.
(As usual, JPG compression artifacts come from imgur.)

Looks pretty much spot-on to me - just double-checked against the originals and couldn't spot anything which stood out as inaccurate. Even the fonts all seem to be a perfect match for the originals, so the spirit of the original is 100% preserved. Great work! = )

Out of interest, for your HD versions, do you plan on fixing the issue with Tails' title cards being lit from the bottom rather than from the top like every other character's, or will you be replicating them as-is?

Also, one other question - any plans to recreate the Adventure Field title cards as well? If so, any idea how you'd plan on replicating the location images which are integrated into those?

Actually, there's room for real improvement in those, since the Station Square and Mystic Ruin ones awkwardly cut off at the sides. No idea what to do about Egg Carrier though, since it uses the CG cutscene model instead of the ingame one

Thanks! About Tails... I made it accurate to the original texture, but I think they were lazy and just changed the hue from the green ones (sub games) to yellow/orange, that's why Tails' gradient is reversed. I get the same when changing the hue (it also becomes very imprecise, so I just recreate every gradient from scratch to have the best results).

As for the Adventure Field cards, I gave a shot at Station Square, since it uses a screenshot from the intro CGI. They did do a lame job at it, but the source images I have aren't high quality enough to do any better.
This is what I came up with:
Posted Image
I'm not even sure it looks better than the original (well the CGI at least, the card thing itself looks good, I think I did a good job with it). The source picture is too tiny (screenshot taken from the CGI intro PC version, 640x480, that's the best quality available. It's also more detailed than the original title card texture was), upscaling it gives a blurry result and I have no idea how to work with that. Sharp angles will look weird, smooth angles will look just as bad.

Mystic Ruins should be easy to do, I just need a good screenshot of the Lost World entrance from the same angle, I think I can do something about it.
Egg Carrier... I have no idea, that angle is from the intro cinematic, but the intro itself has more effects plastered all over the place (smoke, dust etc), the title card one looks like a clear render.
EDIT:
Used some magic and made it better:

I went all the way and re-rendered the Egg Carrier Adventure Field title card from scratch.
Thanks to MainMemory and PkR for getting me started on this.
It's my first 3D render, so it's a little rough around the edges, I'll see what I can do to make it better.
In the meantime...

Ugh soo conflicted, I always wanted to see a HQ texture update to SADX, but at the same time I have a mighty need for that DC total conversion mod.

Why not use both? The HD GUI mod is included with Dreamcast Conversion and can be used with and without other Dreamcast mods. I've just updated it to include Sonikko's title card recreations, which I think look great. The mod now includes all updated title cards except the Mystic Ruins one, which will probably come too in a couple of weeks - the author said he'd be away for a while.
The HD GUI mod can be downloaded from here, for DC Conversion and other Dreamcast-related mods you can get my installer - this is the online version that will download and install mods, but I'm preparing an offline version and a manual install package, which will be released on ModDB soon.

But since the SADX version altered some of the geometry and models, won't that screw up some of the texturing in places?

The HD title cards are part of the HD DC GUI mod which can be used with vanilla SADX assets too, so those ones are for everyone.
The HQ textures like the Casinopolis posters and the SS newspapers, TP sign etc can only be used in conjunction with the DC mods. I don't think I'll ever make a vanilla SADX version, as most of the textures are badly encoded on the PC version and I don't feel like porting all of them over from the GC version since I prefer the DC aesthetic anyway.
