Oh look, a cross post from SSRG. Great. Now before I go on, let me say just one little thing:

Unlike in that one thread I shall not mention, I'm not gonna shove this message in your face with tons of curse words that the puny brain can handle, so without further ado, let's get into this.

So, it all starts after the contest week. Seeing the responses from Pepsi in Sonic 1, I felt disappointed in myself. I proved that I can create good level layouts (as shown with my shiny new Lava Reef Trophy), but everything else about the hack, as well as my other entries still showed that I was an immature cunt who was still an idiot. So right after the contest, I started working on this hack. My goal: Make the best hack anyone has ever seen in awhile. I know this won't be the best (as we all know Markey already has the description for best hacker ever), but I want to make something that is both new and great. So after only 2 months in, this hack is in it's early moments. Lot's of stuff unfinished, from art to level layouts and other stuff. There's also a few problems, but we'll go into that in a bit. So, I was able to get 4 levels into the game. Only 2 of them are good enough to be considered passable, while 1 is still very unfinished while the other is just bad to the point where I'm going to redo it from scratch. So, let's get into all the zones in this game, shall we?

Egg Plant Zone:
The first level of the game, this is what happens when Eggman gets his hands on Green Hill Zone. Anyways, this zone sucks. HARD. I hate this zone as it currently is in this demo. The art is extremely unfinished as well as it being bad (pillow shading hell). The only reason I left it in was because 1) the level layouts were already done by the time I decided to pull the plug, and 2) I didn't have enough time to import all the art AND get all of the zone art done. So what we have here is a zone which should only be played for it's level layouts. Note that Act 3's BG was never made and it's just a mess. I never got around to doing it. So, I recommend skipping this zone. Note that the music was going to be an Act 2/3 thing, but because of some inside problems with some of the people making music for this, the song we needed never got finished. Here's a mockup of what this level will look like in the future.
Marble City Zone:
A city which was built ontop of a volcano. This level is the most unfinished level, with only the basic art completed, with tons of stuff still needed to be done. Only check out this zone if you want to look at the art.

Desert Dazzle Zone:
Now this isn't even hiding the fact I'm copying the Taxman. Basically, this is Desert Dazzle. It's a desert level... but flooded with water. Level layout is pretty basic and might be redone. Some art needs to be done.

Green Hill Zone:
So Sonic has finally broken GHZ of Eggman's grasp, and now he can go through it normally. This is the last level in the game, and it contains the best song ever, Green Hills Zone. Only Act 1 is complete.



-Problem with Special stage sending you back to beginning of level, even if you hit lamppost you will start right at the beginning of the level.
-Speed shoes music not restarting music up
-Some problems with pathswappers, mostly in Egg Plant
-Egg Plant Act 3 not having any new background
-A few palette stuff I need to change
-the DAC in Joenick's songs being all messed up
-Some other stuff I forgot to mention

One thing I need to say is if you want to do a video of this, please ask me on a PM. I hate how people just take hacks when they are very early in development and just upload them to an audience of over a thousand, and don't even link them to the thread and just sends them to the download.

Oh, and um, here's some credits:
-Various guides on SSRG and Retro for helping with stuff
-the people who worked on SonED2 and SonLVL
-Markey's fabulous Sonic 1 Two-Eight disasm for being the greatest
-The people who worked on SonMapEd (why did I use this for importing tiles why)
-Selbi's cool Sonic 1 Text Generator thing which I used to pull the broken title cards out of my ass.

-Everything else in this hack was done by me, besides music which the credits for each song can be seen in song list.


Please don't say anything about Egg Plant Zone. By the time this is posted I'm gonna be getting rid of all the art and level layouts and replacing it with the new art. I appreciate any criticism, as I want this hack to be better, but just don't talk about Egg Plant Zone. I know it's bad and I don't need to be reminded.

Hello. I was originally gonna save my last 2 posts but fuck it. It's not like I'm gonna become a full member anyways and plus the thing I was planning ain't gonna be until awhile so whatever.

So it turns out that due to things going on in my personal life, I might not be able to work on this hack for awhile. Note that this hack is not cancelled, but rather it might maybe go on hiatus for a short while, I don't know what's going to happen. I was going to spend this weekend working on this, but after I wasted my time today working on something that eventually didn't work, I decided to just say fuck it and release it now. This is essentially just an unfinished broken alpha demo.

-Marble City Act 1 and Desert Dazzle Act 2 level layouts complete (stuff still needs to be done though)
-New Idle Sonic sprite (thanks to LooneyDude for editing the original sprite)
-Some random new art (though things are still needed to be fixed such as mappings)
-Speed shoes not restarting level music when ending bug fixed
-Some other shit I might have forgot about but honestly who cares

I don't even know why I'm bothering on wasting my last precious posts on posting this when I can just post this at Discord. It's not like any of you is actually gonna look at it and actually say something about it. Unless I somehow magically become a fucking famous well known member that everyone loves or some shit you won't actually care. You would just go back to your SADX haxing or whatever and ignore this. Oh well. I need to sleep.

Edit: Updated post with new version with fixed versions of all of Joenick's songs. All of you should go love him he's rad he did moosic for my hack.

Discord. Is there a Sonic Retro channel at discord? Anyway, that hack looks great. I like the new graphics. Don't reply to me just to tell me there's Sonic Retro on Discord. Not worth using a post on.

Edit: You really shouldn't have made the pics on your first post a spoiler. That's probably why you didn't get any responces to your thread. A hack thread without a video or picture is pretty useless.

Yeah, the spoiler buttons don't work sometimes. The new art is cute, and the Sonic Sprite fits in quite nicely! Can't play this now (Not home), but looking forward to future developments :)

This looks really promising. I'll whack it on my flashcart when I get home this evening and give it a try.

No one expects anyone to instantly become teh best hax0r, and I think many people around here are just happy to have new classic Sonic content to play, especially if they have new concepts and ideas. You don't need to compare your work to anyone else's, because anything that ever actually gets finished is driven by personal determination, rather than what anyone else thinks. I'm also pretty sure the only rule for being made a full member is "don't be a dick". You sound pissed off at everything and everyone, and that's not necessarily the best approach if you want people to be engaged in your work and be able to give you advice and guidance to make it, and by extension your own skills, better.

I personally haven't gotten round to trying this because the OP was posted when I was away for Christmas, and then it fell off my radar. People on forums have lives and certain things don't get the visibility they may or may not deserve first time round.

You really shouldn't be hard on yourself. I personally like hacks of the classic games more than the 3D games myself, so it's cool to see another 16-bit hack. Once the various bugs are fixed I can see myself enjoying the hack even more than I did. The music is great, and I love the art style.

I was going to mention the graphical corruption issues such as in the title screen and the moving platforms, but then I booted up the game in Kega Fusion (previously playing with a flashcart on a Mega Drive 1) I got essentially the same experience, including slow down at the beginning of Marble City, so I'm assuming this is known behaviour.

It's obviously unfinished and buggy, which you freely admit. But there are some things in there that are really impressive. I'd suggest that you update one of the posts with a definitive list of what is or isn't done, because having to infer what was done and what wasn't from two different posts made it slightly unclear what I was meant to be looking at. But I digress - the new art is very good, and combined with the level design it all feels very Sonic, which is a good thing. That said, I'm not sure why exactly the points text when you destroy a badnik needs to be replace by "GAY". It adds nothing to the experience and turned me off. The level design made things pretty easy, particularly with the amount of invincibility boxes lying around - the sudden change in volume and tempo when hitting an invincibility box was jarring the first time and eventually started to grate. Being easy isn't a bad thing mind, as not every hack needs to be kaizo (especially because I'm rubbish at those hacks), but maybe tone down the amount of powerups?

I got stuck in one of Doctor Robotnik's traps here, in Egg Plant 3. Apologies that the pictures not great, it's a picture of my CRT.

Overall it's a very promising start, and I'd like to see where it ends up if it transpires that you do keep working on it. Good luck.
