Wasn't the cost of game dev in Australia prohibitively high? As in on-location facilities, etc. I don't think it was something specific to SEGA Studios Australia.

Yeah, lots of big Australian game devs shut down. I can't really blame SEGA for doing so considering the costs, but it's still kinda disappointing cause I liked what they did with Castle of Illusion.

I'm kind of sad about this. On one hand, Sonic 4 as a whole was mediocre. On the other, it was more fun to play than Lost World, and I don't like stories without endings.

So I dunno. Mediocre is better than utter tripe.

I hope they will do a Sonic 5 or Sonic Reborn or whatever other name you like at some point, with a creative team that knows what they're doing. Not that any of that is likely to happen, but, if anyone's listening, there you go.

I don't doubt that SEGA will do another attempt at 2D classic Sonic, I just don't expect them to do that anytime soon.

They were making a third?

It's a toss-up for me between Sonic 4 and NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams for the most offensive video game of all time. I think NiGHTS probably has the edge but Sonic 4 is a traversty that is best off being forgotten about. At least it has the grace to play its own part in this, with wonky compatibility with modern phones and tablets.

2D Sonic will forever be eternal. The handheld games that have persisted for over a decade on various platforms and the genesis of the Sonic 4 project prove that. I think Sonic Team's energy and efforts are being applied to a strong next generation reincarnation and debut of Sonic on modern platforms now that the Nintendo deal is over; and once that is achieved and hopefully Sonic's reputation is restored critically they might think about another 2D game. Hopefully at least.

I still haven't played through either episodes of Sonic 4 fully, so this doesn't make me too mad. It does suck to see another Sonic game go forever unfinished, though.

Well, my "involvement" was really just a phone call so I don't really feel it's appropriate to make any kind of judgement that could be misconstrued as "official". The only thing that could be said is that while Sega is around and has the Sonic IP, there's nothing stopping them from coming back to it if they felt it was good for the market.

No no, I wasn't asking in context of this proposition, but rather I was asking you as someone who has more "general knowledge" in case of Sonic franchise's history (well, I'm quite fresh member here ;)). And that's why I've written my doubts (because as far I know, all cancelled games with Sonic were cancelled permanently).

Well, anyway, thanks for reply.

I bought Episode 2 while it was relatively cheap on Steam, and I fucking hated it. I managed to complete Episode 1 (somehow), but I found this to be worse. If it lead to massive improvements, Episode 3 would have been nice, but the chances of improvements were slim.

I've got a feeling that after SEGA released Generations, they thought there was no longer a need for Episode 3.

Due to the great reception that classic Sonic got in Generations, I'd be extremely surprised if they didn't bring him or that gameplay style back at some point in the near future. I mean they'd be mad not to. Classic Sonic is cute enough for the kids and nostalgic enough for the adults. A perfect combo.

Seeing that Boom was planned 4(?) or so years ago, I'd assume that they already have plans for a classic styled game.

Ep II may have looked a bit better but honestly I thought it played a lot worse, with things like the forced team mechanics making the idea of chaining momentum from setpiece to setpiece impossible. Ep I didn't always do much in the way of maintaining momentum (and they try too hard to push you to use the homing attack when almost all the time it's not necessary and is actually ridiculously inefficient) but at least the game's structure didn't fucking actively prevent it the way Ep II does thanks to places like that godawful segment near the end of white park act 3.

I want to find the bastard that thought White Park Act 3 was a good idea and thwap him over the head.

Shoot, I could make a better Episode 3 than Sega as they are possibly could.

Sonic 4 has been shaping up well, I wonder how Episode III would've turned out (especially concerning its leveldesign). But Sega will most likely find another way to bring back the good aspects of Sonic 4, so that's fine by me.
