I've decided to make this topic as I thought it would be more efficient than littering others with random character ideas. I also thought it would make a good concept discussion thread for anyone planning on inserting new characters into projects or just anyone who wants to talk about characters or potential ones they enjoy.

From the list so far we have (but are likely not limited to):

I also made this partly out of the request of ChelseaCatGirl, who wants to work on some sprite sheets for new characters and wants help suggesting moves and animations to make for them. Her current project is Julie Su. Any buffs of the character got an ideal moveset?

There is also a Metal Sonic in Sonic 1 hack. Wasn't there a Mighty hack too?

If you also want to include these, there is the Eggman hack, also the Mecha Sonic hack. I think they are impossible to beat though so maybe not included here?

As said 'not limited to'. There's a huge amount of character hacks made, I've just made a few examples (a rather self aggrandising list as you can see :D). And that's not even including hacks outside Retro. Ray and Tikal S1 hacks exist, I think a Rouge one has been made too.

I do wish there was a decent Metal Sonic in Sonic 1 hack. The only one there is right now is that really old one that's nothing more than a sprite hack... and it's not even complete. Maybe Sonic 4 Episode Metal will lend some ideas for Metal Sonic's moveset.

I'm looking forward to Mecha Sonic being finished. I know someone here posted saying they were in contact with the developer, asked whether anyone was interested in the hack being continued, passed on the positive response, and reported back that it was in development again. Mind you, that was at least half a year ago, so don't take my post as any indication of its current status.

I like to disregard incomplete hacks, or hacks that are just a crap job. If the palette limitations get to a point where the badniks and other objects are nowhere near their original colors, then the hell with it, don't bother. If something is horribly off from a visual standpoint, then it doesn't feel right.

Stealth's Knuckles in Sonic 1 and E-122-Psi's Mighty in Sonic 1 are probably the most perfect in terms of maintaining the original palette for everything, albeit Knuckles is dark red with bluish socks, but still pulls it off and keeps the entire game in its original palette.

Honestly, I just love the job E-122-Psi does with his character hacks. :v:

This gives me a chance to ask: Who did the other Knuckles in Sonic 2 hack? AFAIR, he had his normal palette from S&K; however, I can't remember whether much else in the game was affected. Anyway, I'm curious.

If you mean the other Knuckles in Sonic 1 hack, I think drx was the first one who ported Knuckles, though he left it in an unfinished stage and Stealth finished it.

Well, did that earlier version have a different palette? I know there were two revisions of Stealth's. In any case, I can't remember any other details about the other one, including who it was by / whether it was a separate project. I don't recall it being unfinished, but maybe I just didn't play far enough. So, maybe you're right.

Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't a more complete version of Metal in S1 released? I seem to remember playing one is all.

I have a random (and very basic/badly done) ninja sprite, which I replaced Sonic with in Sonic 1 for a laugh. Only sent it to a couple friends and posted a video on youtube though, and it hardly counts toward anything :P I really like these line of hacks and am interested to see what others crop up.

There seem to be more than a few Metal hacks, and I think some are still under development last time I heard.

I talked to IronSonic recently, sadly S1 Mecha has been discontinued.

By the way ChelseaCatGirl is working on something herself:

She'd like to hear ideas for a moveset so she can draw it up.

Flattered you like my hacks by the way, Knucklez. :D

I love it!! Julie-Su looks cute. :v: I wish I could play as her right now.

As for a moveset, do the obvious. Draw up all the running and walking sprites, as well as every other basic sprite necessary.

Since every character has their own special move, when it comes to Julie-Su, she should use her double-barrel proton gun from the comics. However, if that's out of the question, then maybe she could use some type of voltage-based attack. She's a cybernetically enhanced echidna.

Sure thing, Psi.

I started a Metal Sonic an eternity ago, but it didn't get too far. I might drag it up again once I get back to working on stuff.

It still surprises me nobody has done a Rouge in Sonic 2 hack yet. There's at least a good start on this sheet, and it fits the style gorgeously.

edit: Even Tikal has an impressive sheet (not sure what sprites are absent from one sheet to the other).
