the show was animated pretty cheaply in Spain, and those designs were easier to draw. The Japanese sonic designs are simple, but it's that Mickey mouse sort of thing that they're easy to draw wrong, but hard to draw correctly.
In Robotnik's case it was for the sake of having elasticity to do funny extreme stuff with his head, and my guess with his suit is that it was easier to define the volume of his belly.
AoSTH, SatAM, and Sonic Underground all contain some pretty fucking terrible drawings though.
I liked AoSTH as a kid, and still find it funny today

One day I'd love to see a japanified version of an episode of AoSTH. Replace Sonic, Tails, and Robotnik with more on-model versions, and fix those fucking backgrounds. It'd be interesting at the very least.

That does sound really good, but considering how trippy that show was it would be like watching a Road Runner cartoon on acid with a Sonic cart (or disk) jammed into you're skull while watching the OVA at the same time, take away the OVA part and you'd basically get AoSTH.

Also this might get a little off topic but while the redesign of the characters were interesting, how would the AoSTH and Sonic Underground characters handle a redesign to match the Classic and Modern Sonic games? I didn't say SatAM or Archie because they pretty much almost follows the Modern design anyway nowadays, I'm just curious on how Scratch, Grounder, and Breezie would look like if they were ever redesigned by Sega.

On a side note I really like the OVA movie, to me that was the perfect day for me when I first saw the movie as a kid, when I picked it up at an old video place next to a game store that doesn't exist anymore, I was shocked how good it looked and how it looked just like the cutscenes from Sonic CD. It was great...

I'd actually like to see a level in a game that looks like those Seussian backgrounds you see in AoSTH

Well the pilot has some places that look like they're from the games.

Like 5:40ish

As well as the 5:40 game like scenario.

Isn't at 0:30 the mean bean machine game over / continue screen?

I love it when things like that are adapted. I would have loved it if AoSTH had more game like scenes.

The show also had Chaos Emeralds (during a time-travel arc) that admittedly looked & were named nothing like the actual things, but nevertheless were there; had a gambling area referred to several times as the Casino Night Zone... there are lots of little games references here and there, not to mention the entirety of the main cast had roots in Sonic 2 in one way or another. All this combined to a far more games-faithful show than SatAM ever was, and we all know how wacky AoStH is!

I rather liked how the show's real main character was Robotnik's Ass. I think that's why I have a favorable view of the show, at least more than I did back at the time it was airing.

I love the SatAM Robotnik. I'd take him over the SA redesign any day. :)

Hahaha, AoSTH had the most wacked environment and inhabitants ever.

I hated the 'Westernisation' of the designs a lot at the time, they didn't look very Sonic - and only one animated form has got it 'right' to my mind:

But also this. Recently I've learned to enjoy Robotnik's Ass: The Animated Series AoStH for what it is: DRUGS.

Seconded. I've always hated the Western Designs with a passion; I always used to wonder why those cartoons didn't look anything like the game artwork. An entire series in the art style of the OVA would've been great.

I always saw the OVA as being a 'perfect' adaptation of the games, but you couldn't really do it as an early-mid 90's saturday morning cartoon unless they had an abnormally big budget. Remember this is DiC, so it's in the same field as, say, the Mario cartoons (which hardly stick with the source material, either). They were going for funny drawings, more than good ones.

I'm the proud owner of a cel from Robotnik's shower scene. It proudly adorns the wall above my drawing desk.
