Knuckles has been away for a while but he's black now.

Knuckles is bored to tears and realized the Master Emerald can take care of itself these days. I'm sure it gained the power to go invisible and be shatter proof by this point. To this day I still feel like making the Master Emerald smash not once but TWICE was some sort of inside joke (and giving Knuckles a purpose to be present), not meant to be taken seriously. It had been to hell and back in Sonic 3&K and was strong enough not to break into pieces, so looking back, I just find what SA1/SA2 did was ridiculous. At least the first time Chaos was a good excuse, but the second time? COME ON.

I'm not sure I agree with this - yes, the Master Emerald handled much worse in Sonic 3 & Knuckles but we all know how consistent the series' storylines have been. :v:

Adventure was the first time the Master Emerald shattered - Knuckles restores it and with this, gains the knowledge that he can fully restore a broken Master Emerald. It's not that farfetched to think he'd have taken this into account when shattering it after Eggman tries to steal it.
He even says "If it's in pieces, I can restore it" - I think it was his quickest, easiest option, given that Eggman had already grabbed it and was half-way through making off with it.

And then he punched that rock so hard that the shards flew halfway across the planet and into the depths of the earth. He can basically split atoms with his fists.

Guess maybe he realized the last time he just tried to pry it out of Eggman's claw he got zapped for his trouble.

He can also apparently carry it up his ass in hammer space as a smaller version of itself so that he doesn't have to lug it everywhere/Sonic Team doesn't have to make plausible cut scenes.

I think this was a problem inherent with carrying over his gameplay from Sonic Adventure: they seemed to be hurting for plot devices in Sonic Adventure 2 to keep up the premise that his gameplay consisted of hunting down green rocks and didn't want to wear thin the excuse of him having to find other objects like keys and switches that arbitrarily come in sets of 3. Notice in Sonic 06, the later is exactly what he does.

Oh yes. Oh yes. Finally someone that saw the same absurdity that I did!

I always figured this might have had to do with Chaos Control to some degree (its logical to assume Knuckles has some sort of capabilities in this area), like how when sometimes the Emeralds scatter after they are used, I.e. Sonic 1 ending.

The emerald shards that Knuckles (and Rouge) found in space... Weren't those the same pieces that leaked out of the shuttle's sunroof during his failed attempt at piloting?
