Has it ever been said what Chao (if anything) were physically based on? I know their concept is based on the Nightopian thing from NiGHTS. Maybe its just me, but they bear an eerie resemblance to Final Fantasy's Mog/Moogle creatures.

Oh wow, that's pretty incredible to see. References like these are always great to see.

Though I see where Zephyr was coming from too, I wouldn't be amazed if Moogle's played even a small role on Chao's final appearance.

Sanchan in turn seems to have been inspired by the Flatwoods Monster, which has been referenced many times in video games.

The story (and image) of this absolutely terrified me when I was younger!

    Now that's a strech.

You could also argue that the cards from Alice in Wonderland were based on that monster, since the head shapes look a bit similar... but no.

Ooh, local myths! Braxton county is just a few counties over from me. Granted I always studied the Mothman more since that's literally half an hour from me, but I digress.

I do kind of doubt it was based on the Flatwoods monster though...wish we had easier contact with people at Sonic Team so we could just ask them things like this directly.

I've always seen them as water-themed tomogachi pets really, hence the drop shaped heads.

After reading this topic, first thing that came to mind was Shizuku-chan. Then I found out the series was created after Sonic Adventure....by TMS studios...

I agree that it is unlikely, but after all anything can be "inspiration" for something - the Moogle only has a bobble and wings in common with the Chaos, but could have served a vague basis.

I do still think that Sanchan at least resembles a chibi version of the monster, which is a popular kaiju character in Japan.

I truly believe his name should have been Pothead the Porcupine.

Count the leaves on the plant. 7.

Count the spikes on Silver's head. 5.

It'd make more sense if you were talking about the field maple:

Which coincidentally is the leaf found all over the home of this guy:
