Nintendo Power snippets - Okamiden demo, Sonic Team on Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Ep. 1's physics

Okamiden

- A demo of the game will be made available

Sonic Team producer Takashi Iizuka on the physics of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Ep. 1...

In this title, we have not done a straight port of the gameplay [from the Genesis games], but rather updated it with actions which could not be done in the previous titles, like ceiling-running. These changes probably made for a different feel to the longtime Sonic fans. We're happy for feedback like this, and we'll make sure we can improve the quality even further in upcoming titles.

Yes, guys. Sega is completely ignorant of how the original games worked physics wise and gameplay wise. Have they not seen the ceiling running that is possible in both the Mushroom Hill and Sandopolis Zones? In other words, shit's only going to get worse in the future as long as they have the current team at the helm. The only good thing we could do to hammer our points down is to send Mercury's Physics Guide to them personally in a mass email flood, but as it seems right now, those clamoring for proper physics (including yours truly) are probably not going to get what they want.

I kinda knew they wouldn't change anything betwen parts, people clambering with the hope of "they will improve it for the next part"

never gonna happen.

I can't belive the devs at dimps don't know that the old sonic games DID have ceiling running parts :/ hell of alot better aswell

Wasn't ceiling running also possible in Casino Night Zone?

I'd like to see the return of Silver Sonic with the tentacle chest claw. Even in a horribly broken game, Silver Sonic needs more love.

Wish List
The engine isn't going to be changed, so I'll settle for variable increments greatly tinkered with.
Original level design. No recycling.
Original enemies and bosses. Again, no recycling.
Music that won't feature orchestral masterpieces.
No dust clouds.

Ugh, Iizuka can be an ignorant prick most of the time. He's probably trying to bullshit the whole physics problem just to defend his precious work by Dimps. Anyway, in no particular order...

Original Content:
Okay, the nostalgia run is over. People want to see original levels, objects and badniks, not just the same shit we've seen many years ago. There are many things that Episode II can tap into. We need a Sonic 4 that isn't a remake of previous items.

Decent Music:
Face it, the music sucked. The same instruments, the old drum set, the repetitive length and just plain hilarious music needs to go. Jun Senoue as a sole composer needs to go, his work mostly sucked. We need more composers in this game, not just one. If you're so insistent on using composers from the classic games, just find them!

More Content:
Episode I provided us with 5 zones (including E.G.G. Station), 17 Acts and 7 Special Stages. Sonic 1 had 6 Zones! The current content structure sucks balls and needs to be increased. Not everybody wants to fork out $15 for limited stuff.

Multiplayer Mode:
How about we go Sonic 2-style with Multi-player support. You can use two controllers, or even go online! Also, should the next Special Stage involve that constantly-used tube stage, get two players on that!

Tails as a Playable Character:
On the prediction that Knuckles will be in Episode III, Tails should be added. Like before, a secondary controller can be used to control Tails in a Sonic & Tails mode.

Another move for Sonic:
We got the homing attack, what's next? Something that Megamix already has like a Light Dash? A wall jump or even the long lost Super Peel-Out.

Better Physics / Fixed Engine:
Using the Rush Engine for this game is just so sad when it's broken to shit and in order to get past slopes you need speed boosters. Moonwalking is bad you know, so is other physics failures that this game has. The biggest problem with the game is this field. It may not be another Sonic Genesis, but it's still horrible nontheless.

Improved Level Design:
You know the drill. Less homing attack spam badnik placement, less boosters, etc. Also, not every single level in a Sonic game utilised loop-de-loops, so Dimps needs to take this in consideration. Same as not every level used speed boosters.

Act Structure:
Three Acts with the boss at the end. At the second act, perhaps a mini-boss should come into play. S4 needs to use more Sonic 3K elements in this game you know.

Shit from Sonic 3 & Knuckles:
Elemental shields, act progression, transitions, giant rings in acts, bonus stages, things like that.

Get Iizuka off this project. Of course you could run upside down in the original games. What, did you forget fucking Mushroom Hill Zone? Among several other zones that show that the old Genesis engine is better than Rush's?

So, yeah, what SOTI said. And to add to my previous post, remove the uncurling and reconfigure the role of the homing attack to not be more necessary than the spindash and/or momentum, for instance. And however many acts there'll be per zone, add smooth zone transitions.

What about killing the speed boosters as a whole? I can't believe I forgot the biggest gripe I had with the game. DIMPS: I DON'T WANT THE GAME TO PLAY ITSELF. FUCK YOU.

"Reasonable" Wish List
- integrated gimmicks (in other words, don't separate vines from zip lines)
- Tails. AND! Knuckles as playable characters.
- Better music.
- More levels.
- Better special stages. (DON'T YOU DARE TAKE THE SONIC 2 SPECIAL STAGE AND MAKE IT SUCH THAT YOU ROTATE THE STAGE AS OPPOSED TO MOVING THE CHARACTER!)
- Scenes that show logical progress from one level to the next.
- Mini-bosses. (DON'T YOU DARE RECYCLE MINI-BOSSES!)
- Can I at least have the magnet shield?
- No uncurling.
- More than 5 levels in this episode.
- Make the game more difficult. (you guys out here complaining about no cheap deaths when you prolly finished the game in minutes.... come on)

Possibly "Unreasonable Wish List"
- Fixed physics.
- Element shields.
- Play as Metal Sonic.
- More than 10 levels in this episode.
- Super Emeralds.
- Different character versions (Classic Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles, Modern, and even that Metallic shit they had in Heroes)
- Special Stages that are damn near their own stages.
- Missions. I like missions.
- Copypasta of the features of the Sonic Retro Sonic 1 Leaderboards (score attack, ring attack, badnik attack, etc)
- Return of the Eggman monitor.

Somebody needs to make a montage video of all the points Sonic can run on a ceiling and send it to that ignorant fuckwit.

It's probably being made as we speak. Hell, it's not hard.

Anyway, I'm not sure if they should even bother making this. It's as if they got like, Edios or someone to make that new Donkey Kong Game. They don't have to excitement and ambition of the old sonic team.

Every zone in every sonic game ever has ceilings you can run on.

It's like saying they added the ability to go through loops.

No iPhone release or any iDevice release. That iThing cause the consol versions to suffer because Sega focused too much on a device with bad controls than the 3 that have good controls.

I'm also surprised that Iizuka forgot about Death Egg Zone in S3&k (or just S&K alone). Plenty of ceiling walking in that zone.

They should fire Dimps, and pretend what they made doesn't exist. Then release a real Sonic 4 that acts as a sequel to S3&K, and it should be a retail release (think New Super Mario Bros. Wii), made by Sonic Team alone.

But none of what I said above will never happen, so for right now I'm just hoping for pretty much what everybody else has already said: physics, original content, Tails, Knuckles, disc release

EDIT: which made me remember, I want elemental shields, no homing attack, no speed boosters, mini-bosses, zone transitions, everything MarkoMan (and probably many others) have said, and oh my gosh I HATE DIMPS. Has Dimps ever played Sonic 3 & Knuckles?

...guys, did the Twitter Iizuka kidnap the real Iizuka and take his place? Seriously, I thought that was a fake story at first.

Ugh.

...I'm speechless. I'm amazed anyone can come up with such an idiotic excuse. I don't even think the Twitter Iizuka could come up with something so stupid.

Edit-

The Twitter Iizuka should pull an SNL and make a tweet using that exact quote.
