"Give it a chance first"? We've already listened to the soundtrack, what more is there to be done? "Jumping the gun"? I don't see anyone criticizing Episode 2's music.
In order to really appreciate a soundtrack for a game, you have to be able to play it, and see how it fits. I's part of the psychology of it. I can see why there are some bad vibes towards the soundtrack, as it brings nothing new to the table and uses similar synths and sounds (which are often simplistic), but I think personally it's the best option, considering there has to be some familiarity, especially when the last 2D home console game released in the series was Sonic and Knuckles, 16 years ago.
When I played NSMB, it was the same thing. The music wasn't anywhere near as good as the previous games, and it seemed to just kind of rip on them a bit, and use similar notes and structures. Playing the game completed the feel. It fitted, whereas hearing the music previously made it sound a bit crap.
Anyway, I suppose if you don't like the music, you don't, and nothing can change that. Personally, I think it's not too shabby.

It's a matter of knowing how; something tells me that Jun Senoue has never heard of VOPM, nor knows how to use it.
The man knows how to work a DAW and he's clearly familiar with FM synthesis on the Genesis. He'll figure it out!

Yeah, not really! Good music will sound good regardless of the context it's heard in. You can make just about anything sound better so long as it's supplemented by a sufficiently amusing sensory stimulant (by that virtue, Sonic 4 would probably make the music sound even worse). Besides, it's not like we haven't already seen the entire game in action following the leak when footage was freely available, and Sazpaimon's streamed the game, like, 5 times now. Music sounded about as good then as it does now, unless you're going to argue that actively pressing the buttons myself is going to embellish my auditory experience.
