I think in that last panel he's saying "Hang on, where the fuck's that gun I was holding further up the page!?"
I feel that his work could benefit from more macropenis-tranny-cyborgs, and Nazi-sadism, but I like where he's at with the latex. He's so close, but just needs a little more focus.
I never thought I'd start a Penders folder on my PC for all of these gems, including Pender's biggest blunders (Blenders? nah.. there's gotta be a better name for it) LordofSquad makes a good point (although probably has been brought up before), what on earth is with Pender's creepy "no pants allowed" policy? Has he been taking fashion advice from Zapp Brannigan again?
Oh fuck it. One last magic trick if only to give some closure to this eldritch horror. 700 YEARS IN MS PAINT. I'd show it to Penders himself but he'd probably sue me.
Couldn't find a more appropiate topic to post this in. If it doesn't belong here, feel free to move it to the right one =P I was posting on Twitter screenshots I took from the demo version of the upcoming 3DS game Miitopia (which is out this Friday). One of the things I couldn't post there for obvious reasons was this... Feel free if you folks plan on buying the game and want a few extra chuckles.
Ken Penders copied it from Star Trek (reminder that Ken is a huge Trekkie, so expect him to "borrow" many other ideas). In fact, I'm sure that Zapp Brannigan was meant to parody that dress, so you were kinda close.
Oh God, the "skant" uniform. Even the TNG staff knew that was a bad idea cause you never saw it again after season 1. Never even realized that connection to Penders' stuff until now.
Maybe this is why, even though he loves Star trek and to some extent being better at human characters, he stick to Sonic, because if he makes any actual sci-fi series, he'll plagiarize loads of Star Trek and Paramount would literally rip him to pieces. And not in the fun non-legal action way the Sonic community does to him.
Yeah that makes sense, but wow. I always thought the "Star Trek x Sonic Fanfiction" was just a joke concept in the bottom dungeons of ya olde 'geek hierarchy'. Somehow Penders doing this makes it even more horrifying..
Penders has been stealing stuff from sci-fi shows for a long time. Legionization was ripped off from the Borg. And he even had Sonic travel trough space for a couple of (dumb) issues. There really isn't that much original content from him during his time on Archie Sonic. He relied on so many cliché tropes, it's ridiculous. I'm actually surprised that no one has tried to list all of his "references" to Star Trek and even Star Wars. Then again, that would mean re-reading some of the worst Sonic comics, so I take my surprise back.
If I'm remembering correctly there's a couple of those editorials the comics had where they actually talk about some stuff the Sonic comics had in common or homages to Star Wars and Star Trek.
And weren't the Brotherhood of Echidnas and Echidna society in general based on Kryptonian society from Superman?
There's a Tumblr site that shows scans of the various crap Penders has done (as well as bad art from other artists and some stuff from the NiGHTS, Sonic X and even the Fleetway comics). I don't think there's a comprehensive list of just the Star Trek stuff but scrolling through the blog is a riot regardless. Site is here: http://amomentofarchiesonic-blog.tumblr.com/ LOL yeah, that was pretty much the same story except the Echidnas actually listened and they got out of there. I will admit seeing how the Floating Island actually became a floating island was kinda cool at the time. Don't know if we'll get any sort of backstory for how Angel Island formed.
Out of curiosity I decided to visit Ken's forums and see if there were any updates that he wasn't posting on his twitter. Don't know if it's news we were already aware of, but it looks like he's let his web hosting lapse. Either he forgot to pay for it (he does still have it linked on his twitter bio) or he decided to let it lapse. Either way, we're getting the full brunt of his Penderisms on twitter now. EDIT: Looks like he's just migrating servers because his friend who was handling it beforehand was experiencing poor health. So perhaps we'll see it return.
I never got the chance to actually read his comics back in the day, so recently I've been taking a cruise through the older issues to see what all I missed. Wasn't much, as most of you here know by now. It's actually amazing what kind've shift the comics took once Penders took over. Like, the first 11 issues aren't great, not even by comics standards 20 years ago. But they're entertaining in their own right, and are decently written. Plot points are properly set up from the get-go, the stories have a fair bit of explanation but don't go overboard, and they're all wrapped up tidily. But then Penders steps in, and we don't even get 3 pages in before the Cosmic Highway gets thrown into the mix, which gets like a line of exposition on what it is, none of it relating to its origin or anything like that. Then nothing happens for half the issue, before we meet Evil Sonic who proceeds to lecture Sonic on how anti-universes work. It's such a mind-booglingly slow issue whilst at the same time having horrendous gaps where things move far too quickly. And this is a constant throughout Pender's career. What makes it worse is that he admitted that he's never played the games. And honestly, I question if he even read the comics before he signed on. I knew Penders was bad, but I didn't think he was as bad as everyone made him out to be. Oh how wrong I was.
IIRC, Penders did say that he intentionally avoided reading anything written by other people. This then lead to a hilarious conflict between Penders and Bollers, where Bollers tried to tell his stories and fit them in with Penders' crap, while Penders just straight-up ignored and retconned everything Bollers wrote. Penders also claimed that he never read anything Ian wrote, and that if he were to ever return he would just continue from where he left, completely ignoring Ian's work. Of course, this was before he burned every last bridge by suing Archie.
I wish I could say I was more surprised. Like, look at the anomalies between old writer's and Pender's basic description of Sonic's personality. Gallagher: Penders: It's almost hilarious.
